What is maximum unemployment benefit amount in Washington state 2025?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out what the maximum weekly unemployment benefit amount is in Washington for 2025. I've been working in tech for the past 5 years making decent money and want to know what I could potentially get if I file for UI. I've looked on the Washington ESD website but it's confusing with all the calculations. Does anyone know the current max weekly benefit amount? Also wondering if there's a maximum total you can collect over the whole claim period?

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington for 2025 is $999 per week. This is based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. To qualify for the max, you'd need to have earned at least $74,925 in your highest quarter. The total maximum you can collect is typically 26 weeks worth, so around $25,974 total.

•Thanks! That's helpful. So it's based on quarterly earnings, not annual salary?

Miguel Castro
•Exactly. Washington ESD looks at your base period which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file your claim.

wow $999 a week is pretty good actually. i thought it would be way less than that

•Most people don't get the maximum though. Your benefit amount is calculated as a percentage of your wages in your highest quarter.

•oh ok that makes sense. still better than nothing i guess

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my benefit calculation but their phone lines are always busy. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I had the same problem until I found this service called Claimyr. They help you get through to Washington ESD agents without waiting on hold for hours. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How does it work exactly?

•They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual agent. Way better than sitting on hold all day or getting hung up on.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing! I filed my claim 3 weeks ago and I still don't know what my weekly benefit amount is going to be. My claim is stuck in adjudication.

•Adjudication can take time, especially if there are any issues with your work history or reason for separation. Have you checked your account on the Washington ESD website for any pending issues?

•I've checked but it just says 'adjudication in progress' with no other details. So frustrating!

Does anyone know if the maximum benefit amount changes every year? I collected unemployment back in 2022 and I think the max was lower then.

•Yes, Washington adjusts the maximum benefit amount annually based on the average wages in the state. It's gone up several times in recent years.

•Good to know it keeps up with inflation somewhat. Thanks for the info!

I'm getting $847 a week right now which is pretty close to the max. The key is having consistent high earnings in your base period quarters.

•That's really good! What industry are you in if you don't mind me asking?

•Software engineering. Had a good run at my last company before they did layoffs.

Just a heads up - you also have to meet the job search requirements to keep getting benefits. You need to do 3 job search activities per week and log them in your WorkSourceWA account.

Ava Williams
•Good point. I forgot about that requirement. Is it hard to meet?

•Not really if you're actively looking. Applying to jobs, attending virtual job fairs, updating your resume all count as activities.

The benefit calculation is actually more complex than just looking at your highest quarter. There's a minimum you need to earn in your entire base period too.

Miguel Castro
•Correct. You need to have earned at least $7,378 in your entire base period AND at least 680 hours of work or the equivalent in wages.

•Thanks for clarifying that. The Washington ESD eligibility requirements can be tricky to understand.

I tried calling Washington ESD yesterday about my benefit amount and got disconnected after waiting 2 hours. This is ridiculous!

•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr. No more wasted time on hold. They get you connected to an actual Washington ESD agent who can explain your specific benefit calculation.

•I'm desperate at this point. Going to check out that website you mentioned.

Does anyone know if overtime pay counts toward your benefit calculation? I worked a lot of OT last year.
0 coins
Connor O'Neill
•Yes, all wages reported to Washington ESD count including overtime, bonuses, and commissions.

Javier Morales
•Great! That should help my benefit amount then.

been unemployed for 6 months now and my benefits are about to run out. is there any way to extend them?

Connor O'Neill
•Regular unemployment benefits in Washington are limited to 26 weeks. There might be extended benefits available during high unemployment periods, but those programs come and go.

•ok thanks. guess i better step up my job search then

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator tool but I can't figure out how to use it properly. Anyone had luck with that?
0 coins
Miguel Castro
•The calculator is somewhat helpful but it's not always accurate because it doesn't account for all the variables in your work history. Best to get your actual calculation from Washington ESD directly.

Malik Thompson
•Makes sense. I'll try to get through to them somehow.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you're filing your weekly claims on time! Even if your initial claim is still being processed, you need to keep filing weekly to get paid for those weeks later.

•Good reminder. I almost forgot to file my weekly claim last week.

Isabella Ferreira
•Yeah, missing even one week can cause delays in your payments. Set a reminder on your phone!

I'm confused about the base period thing. My employer laid me off in January 2025, so what quarters do they look at for my benefit calculation?
0 coins
Miguel Castro
•If you filed in January 2025, your base period would typically be October 2023 through September 2024. Washington ESD uses the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters.

CosmicVoyager
•That seems like really old earnings to base benefits on. What if I was making more money recently?
0 coins
Miguel Castro
•You might qualify for an alternate base period which uses more recent quarters. Washington ESD will automatically check if that gives you a higher benefit amount.

Has anyone dealt with an overpayment issue? I'm worried I might have been overpaid and will have to pay money back.

Connor O'Neill
•If you reported your work and earnings correctly, you shouldn't have an overpayment. The key is being accurate and timely with your weekly claims.

•Ok good. I've been very careful about reporting everything accurately.

The job search requirement is kind of a pain but I get why they have it. At least the WorkSourceWA website makes it easy to log your activities.

•Agreed. It's actually helped me stay organized in my job search too.

One more tip - if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I found success using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Got connected to an agent in minutes instead of hours.

Just wanted to add that if you're getting the maximum benefit amount, you still need to pay federal taxes on it. Washington doesn't have state income tax but the IRS will want their cut.
0 coins
Ava Williams
•Good point. I should probably set aside some money for taxes then.
0 coins
Diego Vargas
•Yeah, you can elect to have taxes withheld from your weekly benefits or pay quarterly. Just don't forget come tax time!
