What's the maximum unemployment benefit amount in Washington ESD?

I'm trying to figure out what the highest weekly unemployment benefit amount is in Washington state. I've been working in tech for the past 5 years making around $95k annually and just got laid off last week. When I try to estimate my potential benefits on the Washington ESD website, the calculator seems confusing. Does anyone know what the actual maximum weekly benefit is for 2025? I want to make sure I'm not leaving money on the table when I file my claim.

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington for 2025 is $999 per week. This is calculated based on your earnings in your base year (the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters). To get the max, you'd need to have earned at least $75,924 in your highest quarter during your base year.

Thanks! So if I made $95k last year, I should qualify for close to the maximum then?

0 coins

It depends on how your earnings were distributed across quarters. Washington ESD uses your highest quarter earnings, not your annual total. Check your wage statement when you file.

0 coins

wait i thought it was like $800 something? when did it go up to $999??

0 coins

They adjust it annually based on the state's average weekly wage. It increased for 2025 from the previous year's amount.

damn wish i knew that when i filed my claim 6 months ago lol

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to verify your benefit amount, I discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to agents. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

0 coins

Interesting, how does that work exactly? Do they just call for you?

0 coins

They use some automated system to get through the queue and then connect you when an agent picks up. Worked great when I needed to clarify my wage calculation.

0 coins

Sounds too good to be true but if it works...

0 coins

The $999 max is correct but remember you only get 26 weeks of regular UI benefits in Washington. So even at maximum that's only about $26k total. Make sure you're actively job searching because they do audit those work search logs.

0 coins

26 weeks seems short when the job market is rough. Is there any way to extend benefits?

0 coins

Only if federal extended benefits kick in during high unemployment periods, which isn't the case right now.

0 coins

Just a heads up - even if you qualify for the max weekly amount, it might take a while to actually get it. My claim has been in adjudication for 3 weeks now and I can't get anyone on the phone at Washington ESD.

0 coins

Adjudication delays are the worst! Have you tried calling first thing in the morning at 8am when they open?

0 coins

Tried that, tried lunch time, tried afternoons. Always get the busy signal or disconnected after waiting forever.

0 coins

This is exactly when Claimyr helped me out. I was stuck in adjudication hell for weeks until I used their service to actually reach someone.

0 coins

Quick update - I calculated my base year earnings and looks like my highest quarter was about $28k, so I should get around $560 per week. Not the max but still decent. Thanks everyone for the help!

0 coins

That sounds about right. Remember to file your weekly claims on time and keep detailed job search records.

0 coins

$560 is still good money for unemployment. Some people get way less.

0 coins

Does anyone know if the maximum changes if you have dependents? I have 2 kids and wondering if that affects the calculation at all.

0 coins

Washington doesn't have dependent allowances for unemployment benefits. The maximum is the same regardless of family size.

0 coins

That sucks. Other states give extra for dependents.

0 coins

Yeah Washington's system is pretty bare bones compared to some states

0 coins

I'm confused about the base year thing. If I just started a high paying job 6 months ago but was making minimum wage before that, will that hurt my benefit amount?

0 coins

Unfortunately yes. They look at earnings from 15-18 months ago, not your most recent job. It's one of the frustrating things about the UI system.

0 coins

That's ridiculous! So people who just got better jobs get penalized?

0 coins

Pretty much. The system assumes your recent earnings don't represent your typical wages yet.

0 coins

For what it's worth, $999/week is still way better than what most states pay. My friend in Florida gets like $275 max lol

0 coins

True but cost of living here is way higher too

0 coins

Fair point. $999 doesn't go as far in Seattle as $275 goes in Jacksonville

0 coins

IMPORTANT: Make sure you understand the work search requirements before you start collecting. You need 3 job search activities per week and they can audit you at any time. I got disqualified for not keeping proper records.

0 coins

What counts as a job search activity? Just applying or other stuff too?

0 coins

Applications, networking events, job fairs, even informational interviews. Keep detailed logs with dates, company names, and contact info.

0 coins

The work search thing is so stressful. I spend more time documenting my job search than actually looking for jobs.

0 coins

has anyone had issues with their employer disputing their claim? my old boss is claiming i was fired for misconduct but that's total bs

0 coins

You'll need to participate in a fact-finding interview. Make sure you have documentation to support your side of the story.

0 coins

ugh this is going to be such a hassle. how long does that process take?

0 coins

Can take weeks or even months if it goes to a hearing. But don't let false misconduct claims slide - fight it.

0 coins

One thing to remember about the maximum benefit - you also have to pay federal taxes on it. It's not like getting $999 take-home pay from a job.

0 coins

You can have them withhold 10% for federal taxes when you set up your account. Saves you from a big tax bill later.

0 coins

Good advice. I learned that the hard way my first time on unemployment.

0 coins

The whole system is a nightmare to navigate. I've been trying to get my benefit amount corrected for 2 months now. Every time I call Washington ESD I get disconnected or told to call back later.

0 coins

This is exactly the situation where I used Claimyr again. Their system actually works for getting through to ESD agents when you need corrections made.

0 coins

At this point I'm willing to try anything. The regular phone system is completely broken.

0 coins

Same here. Spent literally 40+ hours trying to reach someone at ESD over the past month.

0 coins

Don't forget about the waiting week! Your first week of unemployment doesn't get paid, so even if you qualify for $999/week, you won't get anything for that first week.

0 coins

Wait, seriously? So I lose a whole week of benefits just because?

0 coins

Yep, it's called a waiting week. Every state does it differently but WA makes you wait.

0 coins

The waiting week is so dumb. Like we're not already stressed enough about losing our jobs.

0 coins

Quick question - does overtime from your base year count toward calculating the maximum benefit amount?

0 coins

Yes, all wages reported to Washington ESD count, including overtime, bonuses, and commissions.

0 coins

Sweet, I worked a ton of overtime last year so that should help my benefit amount.

0 coins

Here's something most people don't know - if you work part-time while on unemployment, they don't just cut your benefits dollar for dollar. There's a formula that lets you keep some benefits even if you earn a little money.

0 coins

How does that work exactly? I might be able to pick up some freelance work.

0 coins

They subtract 75% of your earnings from your weekly benefit amount. So if you earn $100, they only reduce your UI by $75.

0 coins

That's actually not terrible. At least there's some incentive to work part-time.

0 coins

PSA: Make sure your address is updated in the system before you file. I moved recently and it caused a whole mess with my claim that took weeks to sort out.

0 coins

How do you update your address? Through the online portal?

0 coins

Yeah, you can do it online but sometimes it glitches and you have to call. Which brings us back to the phone problem everyone's talking about.

0 coins

And that's where services like Claimyr come in handy - when you actually need to reach a human to fix technical issues.

0 coins

Bottom line: $999 is the max, but most people won't get that much. The average in Washington is probably closer to $400-500 per week. Still better than nothing though!

0 coins

That makes sense. I'm just glad I'll have something coming in while I job hunt.

0 coins

Exactly. Any income is better than zero income when you're between jobs.

0 coins

Thanks for all the info everyone. This thread has been super helpful for understanding how Washington unemployment benefits work!

0 coins

Agreed! Way more useful than trying to decipher the official ESD website.

0 coins

For sure. Now I feel way more prepared to file my claim properly.
