Washington ESD unemployment increase - movement from point A to point B on my claim?
I'm trying to understand something weird on my Washington ESD account. My weekly benefit amount shows an increase from $487 to $612, but there's this confusing language about 'movement from point' in one of the notices I got. Has anyone else seen this kind of terminology? I filed my initial claim back in October and just got approved after a long adjudication process. Not complaining about the increase obviously, but I want to make sure I understand what's happening with my claim so I don't mess anything up when I file my weekly claims.

The 'movement from point' language is probably referring to a change in your benefit calculation. When Washington ESD recalculates your weekly benefit amount, they sometimes use that terminology to describe the shift from your original calculation to the new one. Did you have any wage corrections or additional earnings that weren't included in your original claim?

•Yes! I had some freelance work from earlier this year that I forgot to report initially. Could that explain the increase?

•Absolutely. Additional wages would increase your benefit calculation. The 'point A to point B' language is just their way of documenting the change in your monetary determination.

I had something similar happen last year. Washington ESD updated my claim after I provided additional W-2 information during adjudication. The increase was retroactive too, so I got back pay for the difference. Make sure you're checking your account regularly for any updates.

•Did you get the back pay automatically or did you have to request it?

•It was automatic for me, but it took about 3 weeks to show up. Keep an eye on your payment history tab.

If you're having trouble understanding the notices or need to speak with someone at Washington ESD about your benefit calculation, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). They can help you get through to an actual agent instead of waiting on hold forever. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. I used it when I had questions about my monetary determination and it saved me hours of calling.

•Is that service legit? I've been burned by scam sites before.

•It's legitimate. They just help you navigate the phone system to reach a real person. No personal info required, just helps with the calling process.

•I've heard good things about Claimyr from other people on here. The phone system at Washington ESD is such a nightmare.

The increase is probably because they used your highest earning quarters to calculate your new weekly benefit amount. When you add wages from freelance work, it can bump you into a higher benefit tier. Just make sure you continue filing your weekly claims on time to avoid any issues.

•Good point about filing on time. I've been paranoid about missing a week since the adjudication took so long.

•Yeah, definitely don't miss any weekly filings. Even if payments are delayed, you need to maintain your claim status by filing every week.

ugh the whole washington esd system is so confusing with all their weird terminology. i got a notice once that said something about 'benefit year establishment' and i had no idea what that meant either. at least you got an increase instead of a decrease!

•True! I was worried they were going to tell me I owed money back or something.

•Benefit year establishment just means when your claim year started. It's all standard unemployment terminology, just sounds more complicated than it is.

I'm still waiting for my adjudication to finish. Been 6 weeks now with no movement. How long did yours take?

Wesley Hallow
•Mine took about 8 weeks total. The waiting is the worst part, but hang in there.

•If you need to check on your adjudication status, that's another good use case for Claimyr. They can help you get through to someone who can actually look at your case.

•Thanks, I might try that. I've called probably 50 times and never gotten through.

The movement from point terminology is actually from economics - it refers to shifts along economic curves. Washington ESD probably borrowed the language from economic analysis when describing benefit changes. It's just their way of saying your benefit amount moved from one level to another.

•Interesting! That makes sense. I was wondering if it was some kind of technical term.

•leave it to the government to use academic jargon for something simple lol

Make sure you save all your notices and documentation. If there are any issues later with your claim, you'll want to have everything showing the benefit increase was legitimate and properly calculated.

•Good advice. I've been screenshotting everything just in case.

•Smart. I learned that lesson the hard way when I had to appeal an overpayment notice.

Did anyone else notice that Washington ESD's website has been glitchy lately? Sometimes my claim status shows different information when I refresh the page. Makes me nervous about trusting what I see online.

•I haven't noticed that, but I only check it once or twice a day usually.

•The site does seem slower than usual. I've had timeout errors a few times when trying to file my weekly claim.

•Yeah, that's what I'm seeing too. Hopefully they fix it soon.

Question about the freelance work you mentioned - did you have to provide 1099s or other documentation? I have some gig work that I'm not sure how to report on my initial claim.
0 coins
Wesley Hallow
•I provided my 1099s from last year. They wanted to see all my earnings from the base period, not just W-2 wages.

Justin Chang
•Any earnings during your base period should be reported, including freelance work. It actually helps your benefit calculation if you have higher wages.

The whole adjudication process is such a black box. I wish Washington ESD would give better updates about what's happening with claims instead of just saying 'in progress' for weeks.

•Agreed! The uncertainty is almost worse than the waiting.

At least you finally got through adjudication! I know people who've been waiting 3+ months. The system is so overwhelmed.

•I feel lucky that mine only took 8 weeks. I can't imagine waiting 3 months.

•Yeah, it's rough. Some people have had to use food banks while waiting for their claims to process.

Make sure you understand your job search requirements now that your claim is active. You'll need to log 3 job search activities per week and keep records.

Wesley Hallow
•Thanks for the reminder. I've been focusing so much on getting approved that I forgot about the ongoing requirements.

•It's easy to forget, but they do audit those records sometimes. Better to stay on top of it from the beginning.

Does the increase affect your taxes? I know unemployment benefits are taxable income, but I'm not sure if benefit changes impact withholding.
0 coins
Wesley Hallow
•Good question. I have taxes withheld automatically, but I'm not sure if the amount changes with the benefit increase.
0 coins
Justin Chang
•The withholding percentage should stay the same, but you'll have more total tax withheld since your benefit amount is higher.

Congrats on getting your claim approved! The waiting is the hardest part. Now you can focus on your job search instead of worrying about your claim status.

I'm curious about the retroactive pay. If they increased your benefit amount, do you get the difference for all the weeks you would have been eligible during adjudication?
0 coins
Wesley Hallow
•I think so, but I'm still waiting to see the payments show up. The approval was just a few days ago.
0 coins
Grace Thomas
•In my experience, yes. The retroactive payments usually include the higher benefit amount for all eligible weeks.

The 'movement from point' language is probably just standard administrative terminology. Government agencies love their jargon. Main thing is you got the increase and your claim is active.

•True! I was probably overthinking it. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something important.
