Washington ESD unemployment if u get fired - do you qualify?
so i got fired from my job last week and wondering if i can still get unemployment benefits? my manager said i was terminated for performance issues but honestly i think they just didnt like me. can you still file for unemployment with washington esd if you get fired or do you have to quit to get benefits? really need to know asap because bills are piling up

Yes, you can still get unemployment benefits even if you were fired, but it depends on WHY you were fired. Washington ESD will review your case to determine if the termination was for 'misconduct.' Performance issues usually don't count as misconduct unless it was willful or you repeatedly ignored training.

•thanks! what exactly counts as misconduct then? they said i wasnt meeting quotas but i was trying my best

•Misconduct typically means things like stealing, being drunk at work, insubordination, or deliberately violating company policy. Not meeting performance standards despite good faith effort usually doesn't qualify as misconduct.

File your claim immediately! Even if your employer contests it, you should still file. Washington ESD will investigate and make a determination. I was fired for 'performance' last year and still got my benefits after they reviewed my case.

•how long did the investigation take? im worried about waiting weeks without income

•Mine took about 3 weeks for adjudication. You might get an overpayment if they initially deny then approve later, but that's better than not filing at all.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when my employer contested my claim. Kept getting busy signals and disconnected calls. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual agent who explained the whole process. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•never heard of that before, does it actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me. Saved me hours of calling and redialing. The agent was able to check my claim status and explain what documentation I needed for the adjudication process.

•i tried claimyr too when i couldnt reach anyone at washington esd. definitely beats sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected

THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED!! They'll find any excuse to deny your claim and side with the employer. I got fired for 'attendance' even though I had legitimate medical reasons and they still denied my UI benefits initially. Had to go through a whole appeal process.

•Did you have documentation for your medical reasons? That can make a big difference in the adjudication process.

•Yeah I had doctors notes and everything. Still took 2 months and an appeal hearing before they approved my claim. Washington ESD is understaffed and overworked.

just file online at secure.esd.wa.gov and let them sort it out. worst case they say no and you appeal. but definitely file within the first week of unemployment or you could lose benefits for that week

•ok will do that today. do i need any special documents when filing?

•you'll need your social security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation. keep any termination paperwork your employer gave you

Make sure you're honest about the reason for termination when filing. Washington ESD will contact your former employer anyway, so any discrepancies will hurt your case. If they fired you for performance, say that - don't try to make it sound like something else.

•this is important advice. i tried to sugarcoat my termination and it made things worse during adjudication

•got it, ill be completely honest about what happened

depends on if you were fired for cause or not. if its just performance they usually approve you but if you stole something or got caught doing drugs then probably not

•Right, there's a difference between termination for misconduct and termination for other reasons like poor performance or company downsizing.

I went through this exact situation 6 months ago. Got fired for 'not being a good fit' which was basically performance. Filed immediately and got approved after about 2 weeks. The key is filing right away and being prepared to provide your side of the story if they do an adjudication review.

•did your employer contest your claim?

Amara Okafor
•Yeah they did contest it, which is why it went to adjudication. But I had kept emails showing I was trying to improve and asking for help, so Washington ESD ruled in my favor.

If Washington ESD does put your claim in adjudication status, don't panic. It just means they're investigating the circumstances of your termination. Keep filing your weekly claims during this time even though you won't get paid until it's resolved.

•what if i dont keep filing weekly claims during adjudication?

•You could lose those weeks of benefits permanently. Always keep filing your weekly claims even if your main claim is under review.

When I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about my adjudication status, Claimyr really saved me. Instead of spending days trying to call, I was talking to an agent within an hour. They explained exactly what documents I needed and what the timeline would be.

•how much does that service cost though?

•It's worth it when you're dealing with thousands of dollars in potential benefits and can't get through on your own. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

also remember you have to do job searches every week once your claim is active. keep track of where you apply because washington esd can audit your job search log
0 coins
Zoe Stavros
•how many job searches do you need per week?
0 coins
Giovanni Colombo
•i think its 3 per week but check the requirements when you file. they changed some rules recently

Jamal Harris
The current job search requirement is 3 qualifying job search activities per week. This can include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, or completing WorkSourceWA workshops. Keep detailed records of all activities.

my friend got fired and they made her wait like 6 weeks before getting any money. something about adjudication taking forever
0 coins
Mei Chen
•Yeah adjudication can take several weeks, especially if both you and the employer provide a lot of documentation. That's why it's important to file immediately.

Pro tip: if your employer contests your claim, gather any evidence that shows you were trying to do your job properly. Performance reviews, emails asking for help or clarification, training records, etc. This stuff really helps during adjudication.

Zoe Stavros
•i do have some emails where i was asking my supervisor for more training. ill save those

•Perfect! Those kinds of records show good faith effort on your part, which works in your favor.

Washington ESD is so backed up right now. I've been trying to get someone on the phone about my claim for weeks. The system is broken and they don't care about helping people who actually need it.
0 coins
Liam Sullivan
•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - the regular phone system is basically unusable. At least with their service I could actually talk to someone who could help.

thanks everyone for all the advice! im going to file my claim today and be completely honest about what happened. hopefully it goes smoothly but at least now i know what to expect if they contest it

•Good luck! Remember to keep filing those weekly claims no matter what happens with adjudication.

•You got this! Most performance-related terminations end up getting approved for benefits.

yeah definitely file asap. even if they deny initially you can always appeal. better to get the process started than wait and miss out on benefits you might be entitled to

Zoe Stavros
•exactly what i was thinking. nothing to lose by filing

good luck with your claim! the whole process is stressful but most people do end up getting benefits if they were fired for performance stuff rather than actual misconduct

Zoe Stavros
•thanks! feeling more confident about it now

Just to summarize for anyone else reading this: getting fired doesn't automatically disqualify you from unemployment benefits in Washington. The key factors are whether the termination was for misconduct (willful violations, theft, etc.) versus performance issues or other non-misconduct reasons. Always file your claim promptly and be honest about the circumstances.

•Perfect summary! This is exactly the kind of info people need when they're in this situation.
