Washington ESD unemployment how long does it take to get approved?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and still haven't heard anything back. My claim status just says 'under review' and I'm starting to worry. How long does it usually take for Washington ESD to approve or deny a claim? I lost my job at a restaurant when they had to cut staff and I really need this money to pay rent. Should I be concerned that it's taking this long?

It can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on your situation. If there are no issues with your claim, it's usually faster. But if they need to verify your employment history or investigate the reason you left your job, it takes longer.

•Thanks, that's helpful. I didn't quit or get fired for cause, just laid off due to business being slow. Hopefully that speeds things up.

•Restaurant layoffs are pretty straightforward usually. You should be fine if you have all your paperwork in order.

In my experience, Washington ESD typically processes claims within 3-4 weeks for straightforward cases. However, if your claim goes into adjudication, it can take 6-8 weeks or longer. The key factors that affect processing time are: verification of your last employer information, reason for separation from work, and whether you have any prior claims that need review.

•What exactly is adjudication? I keep seeing that word but don't really understand what it means.

•Adjudication is when Washington ESD needs to investigate your claim further. This happens when there are questions about your eligibility - like if your employer disputes the reason you left, or if there are discrepancies in your work history.

I've been waiting 5 weeks for mine to get approved! Called Washington ESD probably 50 times and can never get through. It's ridiculous how hard it is to reach someone there. The phone system just hangs up on you after being on hold forever.

•Have you tried calling right when they open at 8am? That's the only time I've had luck getting through.

•Yeah I've tried that too. Still can't get through. It's like they don't want to help people.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They called me back within an hour and I was able to speak to someone about my claim. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

The whole system is broken. I've been waiting 2 months for my claim to be resolved and nobody can give me a straight answer about what's taking so long. Meanwhile I'm about to lose my apartment.

•That's terrible. Have you tried contacting your state representative? Sometimes they can help push things along.

•I didn't know that was an option. How do I do that?

•You can look up your district representative online and call their office. Explain your situation and they might be able to help expedite your claim.

For what it's worth, I filed my claim in December and it took exactly 3 weeks to get approved. I think the holidays might have slowed things down a bit, but once it was approved, I got my first payment within 2 days.

•That gives me hope! Did you have to do anything special or just wait it out?

•Just waited. I made sure to file my weekly claims even though I wasn't getting paid yet. That's important - you have to keep filing even while your initial claim is being processed.

10 days isn't that long honestly. I know it feels like forever when you need the money but Washington ESD is just slow. I'd give it at least 3 weeks before really worrying.

•I guess you're right. It's just stressful not knowing what's happening.

•Totally understand. The waiting is the worst part.

One thing to check - make sure you're filing your weekly claims even if your initial claim isn't approved yet. You can't get paid for weeks you don't file for, even retroactively. Log into your Washington ESD account and file weekly claims every Sunday.

Diego Chavez
•Yes, I've been doing that. Filing every week even though I'm not getting paid yet.

•Good! That's the right thing to do. Once your claim is approved, you'll get paid for all those weeks.

The system is overwhelmed right now. Lots of people filing claims and not enough staff to process them quickly. Just have to be patient unfortunately.

•Easy to say be patient when you're not the one who can't pay bills.

•Fair point. I've been there too, it's really stressful.

Check your online account regularly for any notifications or requests for additional information. Sometimes Washington ESD needs more documentation and if you don't respond quickly, it delays your claim even more.

Diego Chavez
•I check it every day. So far no requests for additional info, just says 'under review'.

•That's good. No news is usually good news in this case.

I got approved in 2 weeks but then had to wait another week for my debit card to arrive in the mail. Make sure you have direct deposit set up if possible - it's faster than waiting for the card.

Diego Chavez
•I set up direct deposit when I filed. Hopefully that helps speed things up when I do get approved.

Luca Russo
•Yeah, direct deposit is definitely the way to go. Gets your money faster.

If you really need to talk to someone, I'd recommend trying Claimyr again. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. I was able to get through to a Washington ESD agent and get my claim status updated. Much better than spending hours on hold.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke, can't afford to pay for more services.

•It's worth checking out their website to see if it makes sense for your situation. For me, getting through to someone was worth it to get my claim moving.

Restaurant worker here too. Got laid off in November and my claim took 4 weeks to get approved. The good news is once it's approved, you get all the back pay for the weeks you filed. Hang in there!

•Thanks for the encouragement! It helps to hear from someone in a similar situation.

•No problem. The restaurant industry has been rough lately. Hope things turn around for you soon.

Make sure your former employer isn't contesting your claim. That can really slow things down and you might not even know about it until weeks later.

Diego Chavez
•How would I find out if they're contesting it? My manager seemed understanding when they laid me off.
0 coins
QuantumQuester
•Washington ESD would notify you if there was a contest, but sometimes those notices get lost in the mail or end up in spam folders. Keep checking your online account.

I work at a different restaurant and we've had to lay people off too. Most of our former employees got their claims approved within 2-3 weeks. The key is making sure all your information is accurate when you file.

Diego Chavez
•I was pretty careful when filling everything out. Double-checked all my employment dates and information.

•Sounds like you did everything right then. Should hopefully come through soon.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember checking my account multiple times a day when I was waiting for my claim to be approved. Try to distract yourself and just check once a day if you can.

Diego Chavez
•Yeah I'm definitely guilty of checking way too often. It's hard not to when you're anxious about it.

•I totally get it. The uncertainty is really stressful.

Don't forget you also need to be actively looking for work and documenting your job search. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week. Keep records of everything you do.
0 coins
Diego Chavez
•I've been applying to jobs but wasn't keeping detailed records. I should start doing that.
0 coins
Jamal Harris
•Yes, definitely keep track. Applications, networking, job fairs, even online job training courses count toward your search activities.

If your claim does get denied for some reason, don't panic. You can appeal the decision. I had to do that once and ended up getting approved after the appeal process.
0 coins
Diego Chavez
•How long did the appeal process take?
0 coins
Mei Chen
•About 6 weeks for me, but it was worth it. Got all my back pay once it was resolved.

Try not to worry too much. 10 days really isn't that long in Washington ESD time. I know it feels like forever but most claims do get approved eventually if you're eligible.

Diego Chavez
•Thanks for the reassurance. I know I'm probably overthinking it but it's hard not to worry.

•Completely understandable. Financial uncertainty is really stressful.

One more tip - if you do need to contact Washington ESD, try using their online messaging system in addition to calling. Sometimes you get a response faster that way.

Diego Chavez
•I didn't know they had an online messaging system. I'll look for that option.
0 coins
Amara Okafor
•Yeah, it's in your online account. Not always faster but worth trying.

•I tried their messaging system but never got a response. That's actually why I ended up using Claimyr - at least I knew I'd be able to talk to a real person about my situation.
