Washington ESD unemployment for contractors - do contractors qualify for unemployment benefits?
I've been working as an independent contractor for the past 2 years doing web development and my main client just ended our contract. I'm wondering if contractors can file for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD? I've been paying my own taxes as a 1099 worker but never paid into unemployment insurance. Does Washington state have any programs for contractors or am I out of luck? Really stressed about this situation and need to know my options.

Unfortunately regular unemployment insurance (UI) doesn't cover independent contractors in Washington state. You had to be an employee paying into the system to qualify for standard benefits.

•That's what I was afraid of. So there's literally nothing available for contractors who lose work?

•There might be other programs - keep reading the thread, someone will probably know more specifics

Actually Washington state does have some options for contractors now! They launched a program for independent contractors and gig workers. You might want to check the Washington ESD website or try calling them directly. I know getting through can be tough though - I've had better luck using claimyr.com to actually reach an agent when I needed help with my claim. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Really? That's hopeful news! I'll definitely check that out. How recent is this program?

•Wait, is this the same as regular unemployment or a separate thing? I'm confused about what programs are available

•It's separate from regular UI benefits. Different application process and requirements. Best to talk to Washington ESD directly to understand what you qualify for.

I'm in a similar situation as a freelance graphic designer. Been trying to figure this out for weeks. The Washington ESD website is confusing about contractor eligibility.

•Exactly! It's so hard to find clear information about what's available for people like us.

•Have you tried calling Washington ESD directly? That's probably your best bet for getting accurate information about contractor programs.

The key thing to understand is that traditional unemployment insurance requires you to have been an employee, not a contractor. However, Washington state has been expanding programs for gig workers and independent contractors in recent years. You'll need to look into those specific programs rather than regular UI benefits.

•That makes sense. Do you know what these programs are called so I can search for them specifically?

•I think it's related to the paid family leave program but I'm not 100% sure

•There are different programs for different situations. Best to speak with Washington ESD directly about your specific circumstances as a contractor.

This is so frustrating! Why is it so hard to find clear information about what benefits are available for contractors? I've been searching for hours and getting conflicting information everywhere.

•I know, right? The whole system seems designed around traditional employment relationships.

•Yeah, it's like they assume everyone is a W2 employee. Really stressful when you're already worried about income.

•That's exactly why I mentioned claimyr earlier - sometimes you just need to talk to an actual person at Washington ESD to get straight answers instead of trying to decode the website.

I was a contractor for 3 years and when I lost my biggest client, I found out I could apply for certain benefits but not regular unemployment. There's definitely something available but the application process is different.

•What kind of benefits were you able to get? And how did you find out about them?

•I had to call Washington ESD multiple times to get clear answers. The website didn't explain it well at all.

•How long did it take to get approved? I'm worried about the timeline since I need income soon.

From what I understand, Washington state has been expanding benefits for gig workers and contractors, but it's not the same as regular unemployment insurance. You might qualify for pandemic-related programs or other assistance.

Paolo Rizzo
•Are those pandemic programs still available? I thought most of those ended a while ago.

Oliver Fischer
•Most pandemic programs have ended, but some states created permanent programs for contractors. You'd need to check what's currently available in Washington.

The bottom line is that contractors typically don't qualify for regular unemployment benefits because they don't pay into the system. However, there may be other programs available depending on your situation.

Paolo Rizzo
•That's what I figured. I wish there was a simple yes or no answer, but it sounds like it depends on the specific programs available.

•It's so complicated! Why can't they just have a clear list of what's available for contractors?

I keep seeing people struggle with getting clear information about contractor benefits. Honestly, the fastest way to get accurate info is probably to use a service like Claimyr to actually talk to a Washington ESD representative. They can tell you exactly what programs you qualify for based on your specific situation.

•I might have to try that. The website is just too confusing and I can't get through on the phone normally.

Just to clarify for everyone asking - there are different types of benefits and programs available in Washington state beyond just regular unemployment insurance. Some contractors may qualify for certain programs, but you need to speak with Washington ESD directly to understand what applies to your specific situation.

•Thanks for the clarification. It sounds like the main takeaway is that I need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD rather than trying to figure it out online.

For what it's worth, when I was dealing with this as a contractor, I found that Washington ESD has specific programs for different types of workers. It's not just regular unemployment or nothing - there are other options in between.

I had no idea there were programs for contractors at all! I've been a freelancer for years and always assumed I was on my own if work dried up.

•That's why it's so important to actually speak with the agency directly. There are often programs that aren't well-publicized.

I've been following this thread and it's clear that a lot of contractors don't know about available programs. If you're serious about finding out what you qualify for, I'd really recommend using Claimyr to get connected with Washington ESD. It's way better than trying to navigate their phone system on your own.

•I think I'm going to try that. This thread has convinced me that I need to actually talk to someone who knows the system.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already stressed about money.

•Check their website for current info - claimyr.com. But honestly, even if there's a cost, it might be worth it if it helps you access benefits you didn't know existed.
