Washington ESD unemployment benefits while attending school - does unemployment pay for school?
I'm currently collecting unemployment from Washington ESD and thinking about going back to community college to get some new skills. My question is does unemployment pay for school or can I even stay on unemployment while taking classes? I heard different things from people and I'm really confused about the rules. My weekly claim amount is $420 and I don't want to mess up my benefits by enrolling in school. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

Washington ESD has rules about school attendance while on unemployment. You can take classes but there are requirements - you need to be able and available for work, which means you can't be in full-time school that would prevent you from accepting a job. Part-time classes are usually okay as long as you're still actively looking for work and available for interviews.

•So part-time is fine? What about if I take evening classes?

•Evening classes should be fine since they don't interfere with normal work hours. Just make sure you can still attend job interviews during the day if needed.

i went to school while on unemployment last year and it was fine. just had to keep doing my job searches and report that i was available for work on my weekly claims

•Did you have to tell Washington ESD that you were in school when you filed your weekly claims?

•yeah i mentioned it when they asked about my availability but since it was just part time they said it was ok

There's actually a specific program through Washington ESD called the Training Benefits program where they can help pay for approved training programs while you're on unemployment. You should look into that instead of just hoping regular unemployment will cover school costs. The program has to be pre-approved though.

•Oh wow I had no idea about this program! How do I apply for it?

•You need to contact Washington ESD and ask about Training Benefits eligibility. They'll evaluate if your chosen program qualifies and if you meet the requirements.

•I tried calling Washington ESD about this exact thing but could never get through. Spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. Super frustrating when you need answers about important stuff like this.

I had the same problem trying to reach someone at Washington ESD about training programs. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have this system that calls for you and connects you when someone picks up. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration.

•That sounds too good to be true. Does it actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me. Got connected to a Washington ESD rep within like 20 minutes instead of spending all day trying to call. They were able to explain the Training Benefits program requirements and help me start the application process.

•I might try this. I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about this school thing with no luck.

WAIT you can get unemployment AND have them pay for school?? This is news to me. I've been on unemployment for 2 months and nobody told me about this training program thing.

•It's not automatic - you have to qualify and the training has to be approved. Not all schools or programs are eligible.

•Still better than nothing! I'm definitely looking into this now.

Be careful about full-time school though. My friend got in trouble with Washington ESD because she enrolled in a full-time nursing program and they said she wasn't available for work. Had to pay back some of her benefits. Part-time is usually safer.

•Yikes that's scary! How much did she have to pay back?

Nia Harris
•I think it was like $2,800 in overpayment. She had to appeal it and eventually got it reduced but it was a whole mess.

•This is why it's important to get approval beforehand if you're planning any kind of training program while on unemployment.

what about online classes? those seem more flexible

Anastasia Kozlov
•Online classes can work as long as they don't interfere with your job search activities and you remain available for work. Same rules apply whether it's online or in-person.

•makes sense. probably easier to schedule around job interviews too

I'm in a similar situation but with vocational training instead of college. Anyone know if the rules are different for trade schools?
0 coins
Anastasia Kozlov
•Trade schools can actually be better for the Training Benefits program since they're often shorter-term and more directly job-focused. Washington ESD likes programs that lead to in-demand careers.

•Good to know! I was looking at HVAC certification.

Update: I tried that Claimyr thing and it actually worked. Got through to Washington ESD and talked to someone about the Training Benefits program. They said I need to submit an application with my school choice and wait for approval before enrolling. Takes about 2-3 weeks for a decision.

•That's awesome! I'm definitely going to try Claimyr too. Did they say anything about which schools are approved?

Sean Kelly
•They have a list of approved training providers but community colleges are usually good options. The program has to lead to a job in a high-demand field.

This thread is so helpful! I had no idea about the Training Benefits program. My unemployment runs out in 8 weeks and I was panicking about what to do next.

Anastasia Kozlov
•Perfect timing then! The Training Benefits program can extend your benefits while you're in approved training, so you wouldn't lose income while learning new skills.

•Wait it extends benefits too? This keeps getting better!

Just want to add that you still have to do your weekly claims even if you're in school. Don't forget to certify every week or you'll lose benefits.

Does anyone know if the Training Benefits program covers books and supplies or just tuition?
0 coins
Anastasia Kozlov
•I believe it's mainly tuition support, but you'd need to ask Washington ESD directly about what expenses are covered for your specific program.

•Another good question for when you call Washington ESD. If anyone else needs to get through to them, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work.

Can you do the Training Benefits program if you're already partway through unemployment? Or do you have to apply right at the beginning?
0 coins
Anastasia Kozlov
•You can apply for Training Benefits at any point during your unemployment claim as long as you still have benefits remaining. The sooner the better though since the approval process takes time.

•Thanks! I'm about halfway through my claim period so I should still have time.

This is making me rethink my whole job search strategy. Maybe I should get some new skills instead of just applying for the same type of jobs.

Diego Chavez
•That's actually a smart approach, especially if your industry has been struggling. The Training Benefits program is designed for exactly this situation.

•Yeah I've been in retail for 10 years and those jobs are getting harder to find. Maybe time for a career change.

Just be realistic about the time commitment. Even part-time school plus job searching plus unemployment requirements can be overwhelming.

•Good point. I need to make sure I can handle everything before committing.

•Exactly. It's worth it in the long run but don't underestimate the workload.

What happens if you get a job offer while you're in the Training Benefits program? Do you have to quit school?
0 coins
Anastasia Kozlov
•Generally you're supposed to accept suitable work offers even if you're in training. But the definition of 'suitable' might be different if you're in an approved training program. You'd need to discuss this with Washington ESD.

•Makes sense. I guess the whole point is to get back to work eventually.

•That's encouraging! Did she have trouble with the unemployment office during the training?

•No major issues once she got approved. Had to check in regularly but they were pretty supportive of the program.

I'm sold on this idea. Going to call Washington ESD tomorrow to ask about Training Benefits eligibility. Thanks everyone for all the info!

I went through the Training Benefits program last year and it was a game-changer! Did a cybersecurity certification program while still getting my unemployment benefits. The key is getting pre-approval - don't start any classes before Washington ESD approves your training plan or you could lose benefits. The application process took about 3 weeks but totally worth it. They covered my tuition for a 6-month program and I found a job 2 weeks after graduation making $15k more than my previous job. Just make sure the program you choose is in a high-demand field - they're more likely to approve tech, healthcare, and skilled trades.

•This is exactly what I needed to hear! A real success story with actual numbers. $15k more is huge! Can you share what cybersecurity program you did? I'm interested in tech but wasn't sure which direction to go. Also, when you say "high-demand field" - did Washington ESD give you a list of approved career areas or did you have to research that yourself?
