How much can you make while on unemployment in Washington ESD without losing benefits?
I'm on unemployment right now and got offered some part-time work. I'm worried about messing up my benefits but I really need the extra money. Does anyone know exactly how much you can earn while still collecting unemployment from Washington ESD? I've heard different things from different people and the website is confusing. My weekly benefit amount is $520 so I don't want to accidentally go over some limit and lose everything.

You can earn up to your weekly benefit amount minus $5 without any reduction. So if your WBA is $520, you can make up to $515 without losing any benefits. After that, they deduct dollar for dollar from your benefits.

•Wait so if I make $515 I still get my full $520? That seems too good to be true.

•Yes, that's correct. It's to encourage people to take part-time work while job searching. Just make sure you report ALL earnings when you file your weekly claim.

Be super careful about reporting everything correctly. I made the mistake of not reporting some cash work and Washington ESD caught it months later. Now I owe them $2,400 in overpayments.

•Oh no! How did they find out?

•They cross-reference with employment records and tax filings. Even cash jobs can show up eventually if the employer reports it.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask this same question but can never reach anyone. The phone lines are always jammed. Has anyone found a better way to contact them?

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They handle the calling for you and get you connected. Check out claimyr.com - there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Really? That sounds almost too good to be true. Does it actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me. I was able to get my adjudication issue resolved after being stuck for a month. Way better than calling hundreds of times myself.

•That's terrible advice. Washington ESD has ways of finding unreported income and the penalties are severe. Not worth the risk.

•Seriously don't do this. My friend got caught and had to pay back everything plus penalties. Just report your earnings properly.

The earnings limits are pretty generous actually. I was working 20 hours a week at $15/hour ($300 weekly) and still getting most of my unemployment benefits. Just make sure you understand the calculation before you start working.

•What was your weekly benefit amount? Trying to figure out if it's worth taking this job.

•My WBA was $480, so I could earn up to $475 without any reduction. Since I was only making $300, I lost nothing.

•That's actually really helpful, thanks!

Make sure you report GROSS earnings, not net. I made that mistake my first week and had to call to correct it. Washington ESD wants to know what you earned before taxes and deductions.

•Good point! I definitely would have reported net earnings if you hadn't mentioned this.

The whole system is so confusing. Why can't they just have a simple calculator on their website? I've been unemployed for 3 months and still don't fully understand all the rules.

•There actually is a calculator if you log into your account, but it's buried pretty deep in the menus. Look under 'Benefit Information' then 'Earnings Calculator'.

•I had no idea that existed! Thanks, going to check it out now.

Whatever you do, don't try to game the system. I thought I was being smart by only working enough to stay under the limit, but then I got audited and they wanted to see all my job search records too. Turns out I wasn't applying to enough places.

•How many jobs are you supposed to apply to each week?

Talia Klein
•Three job search activities per week. Can be applications, interviews, networking events, etc. Keep detailed records of everything.

I'm in a similar situation. Got offered a temp job that pays $600/week but my unemployment is $420/week. Trying to figure out if it's worth it since the temp job might only last a month.

Jabari-Jo
•With those numbers, you'd lose your entire unemployment benefit since you'd be earning more than your WBA. But $600 is still more than $420, so financially it makes sense.

•True, but what happens when the temp job ends? Do I have to reapply for unemployment?
0 coins
Jabari-Jo
•No, you can usually reopen your existing claim as long as it's within the benefit year. Just file a new claim when the temp job ends.

Does anyone know if gig work like DoorDash or Uber counts the same way? I'm thinking about doing some delivery driving but not sure how to report those earnings.

Jabari-Jo
•Yes, all self-employment income counts and needs to be reported. Keep track of your gross earnings from all gig work.

•What about expenses like gas and car maintenance? Can I deduct those?

Jabari-Jo
•For unemployment purposes, you report gross earnings. Tax deductions are separate and handled on your tax return.

I've been calling Washington ESD for two weeks trying to get clarification on this exact question. The wait times are insane - I've literally spent 6 hours on hold just to get disconnected.

Nia Watson
•That's exactly why I used Claimyr. They handle all the calling and waiting for you. I was able to get my questions answered without spending my whole day on hold.

•Is Claimyr expensive? I'm already struggling financially and can't afford to pay a lot for help.

•It's worth checking out their website. The time saved alone made it worth it for me, especially when I was trying to resolve an urgent issue with my claim.

Just wanted to share my experience - I worked part-time for 3 months while on unemployment and never had any issues. The key is being completely honest about your earnings and reporting everything on time.

Seraphina Delan
•That's reassuring to hear! Did you have to provide any documentation or proof of your part-time work?

Jean Claude
•Not initially, but I kept all my pay stubs just in case. Good thing too because they did ask for them during a random audit about 6 months later.

The calculation seems straightforward but I'm worried about making a mistake. What happens if you accidentally report the wrong amount?

Jabari-Jo
•If you catch the mistake quickly, you can usually call to correct it. If they catch it later, you might have to pay back any overpayment, but they're usually understanding about honest mistakes.

•Good to know. I'd rather be safe than sorry with something this important.

Does working part-time affect how long you can collect unemployment? I'm worried about using up my benefits too quickly.
0 coins
Jabari-Jo
•Working part-time can actually extend your benefit period since you're not using your full weekly benefit amount. Each partial week counts as less than a full week of benefits used.
0 coins
Josef Tearle
•That's actually really good news! So I could potentially stretch my benefits longer by working part-time?
0 coins
Jabari-Jo
•Exactly. It's one of the benefits of the part-time work provisions - encourages people to take any work available.

I wish there was a simple chart or something that showed exactly how much you can earn at different benefit levels. All the explanations are so confusing.
0 coins
Jabari-Jo
•The basic rule is: Weekly Benefit Amount minus $5 = maximum you can earn without reduction. Over that amount, benefits are reduced dollar for dollar.
0 coins
Shelby Bauman
•So if my WBA is $300, I can earn up to $295 without losing anything?
0 coins
Jabari-Jo
•Correct! And if you earn $300, you'd get $295 in unemployment benefits instead of the full $300.

Been there, done that. Working part-time while on unemployment is totally doable if you're careful about reporting. Just don't try to cut corners or hide anything.

•Thanks for all the advice everyone! I feel much more confident about taking this part-time job now.

•Good luck! Just remember to report everything accurately and you should be fine.

One more thing to remember - if you're working part-time, you still need to be actively looking for full-time work and meeting all the other unemployment requirements. The job search requirement doesn't go away.

Seraphina Delan
•That's a good point. I almost forgot about that requirement. Thanks for the reminder!
