Washington ESD unemployment benefits running out - what are my options?
I'm getting close to exhausting my regular unemployment benefits and I'm starting to panic. I've been receiving Washington ESD benefits for about 22 weeks now and I think I only have a few weeks left. I'm still actively job searching but haven't found anything yet. What happens when my unemployment runs out? Are there any extensions or other programs I can apply for? I really can't afford to have no income right now.

You should check your account on the Washington ESD website to see exactly how many weeks you have left. Regular UI benefits in Washington are typically 26 weeks, but it can vary based on your earnings history.

•I looked and it shows 24 weeks used, so I think I have 2 weeks left. Is there anything after that?

•There's no automatic extension right now like there was during COVID. You might qualify for other programs though.

When your regular benefits end, you should look into Extended Benefits (EB) if Washington state triggers it, but that's not always available. You might also want to check if you qualify for any retraining programs through WorkSource.

•How do I find out if Extended Benefits are available? The Washington ESD website is confusing.

•I tried calling Washington ESD about this same thing last month and could never get through. Spent hours on hold.

•That's the biggest problem - getting through to someone who can actually explain your options. I've heard some people use Claimyr to get connected to Washington ESD agents faster. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

SAME SITUATION HERE!!! I'm at 23 weeks and freaking out. The job market is still terrible and I can't find anything that pays enough to live on. This is so stressful.

•At least I'm not alone in this. It's scary not knowing what comes next.

•Have you both been keeping up with your job search requirements? That's important for any potential extensions.

•Yes I've been doing 3 job searches per week and logging everything. Still nothing though.

You need to start preparing now before your benefits end. Look into SNAP benefits, local food banks, and other assistance programs. Also check with your utility companies about low-income programs. Don't wait until you're completely out of money.

•Good point. I should start researching other resources. Do you know if there are job training programs that provide income while you're in them?

•Yes, some WorkSource programs offer training allowances. You'd need to contact your local WorkSource office to see what's available.

•I did a WorkSource training program two years ago and it was actually pretty helpful. They covered my expenses while I got certified in medical coding.

This happened to my neighbor last year. She had to go back to working multiple part-time jobs just to survive. The system really leaves you hanging once regular benefits end.

•That's what I'm afraid of. I had a decent job before and now I might have to take anything just to pay rent.

•It's so unfair. We pay into this system and then when we really need help it just cuts off.

Before you panic, call Washington ESD and ask specifically about your options. They can look at your claim history and tell you if there are any programs you might qualify for. It's worth the phone call even if it takes a while to get through.

•Good luck getting through. I've been trying for weeks about my own claim issues.

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and actually got through to Washington ESD in like 15 minutes. Was worth it just to get answers about my claim status.

•Really? I might try that. I need to know exactly what my options are before I run out completely.

Don't forget to file for your last few weekly claims even if you're job searching. Some people stop filing thinking it's over but you need to keep claiming until you're actually exhausted.

Samuel Robinson
•Yes I'm definitely still filing weekly. I'm not giving up any benefits I'm entitled to.

•Same here. Every dollar counts at this point.

I exhausted my benefits six months ago and had to figure everything out the hard way. Start applying for other assistance programs NOW while you still have some income. It takes time to get approved for things like food stamps and housing assistance.

•How long did it take you to find work after your benefits ended?

•About 3 months, but I had to take a job paying way less than my previous one. Still looking for something better.

•This is exactly why I said to start preparing other resources now. Don't wait until you're desperate.

Also check if Washington state has any emergency assistance programs. Sometimes there are one-time payments available for people transitioning off unemployment.

Samuel Robinson
•I hadn't thought of that. Where would I look for information about emergency assistance?

•Start with the Washington state Department of Social and Health Services website. They have a benefits finder tool.

The whole system is broken. They make it so hard to get help when you need it most. I'm still fighting with Washington ESD about my claim from months ago.

•It really is frustrating. We shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops when we're already struggling.

•I get the frustration but focus on what you can control right now. Get the information you need and explore all your options.

Update: I tried Claimyr like someone suggested and finally got through to Washington ESD. The agent explained my options and helped me apply for a training program that provides a small allowance. Game changer!

•That's great! What kind of training program? I'm interested in anything that might help.

•It's through WorkSource for healthcare support. They cover basic expenses while you get certified. Ask about Trade Adjustment Assistance too if your job was affected by trade.

•I wish I had known about these programs when my benefits ended. Would have saved me a lot of stress.

For anyone in this situation, also consider gig work or temporary employment while you're looking for permanent work. It's not ideal but it can help bridge the gap.

Samuel Robinson
•I've been thinking about that. Do I need to report gig work income to Washington ESD while I'm still getting benefits?
0 coins
Lucas Schmidt
•Yes, you have to report all income on your weekly claims. But you can still get partial benefits if you're working part-time.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I'm going to start applying for other assistance programs this week and look into the training programs mentioned. At least I have a plan now.

•Same here. This thread has been really helpful. Good to know there are options even if they're not obvious.

•Good luck to both of you. The key is starting early and not waiting until the last minute.

One more thing - keep track of all your job search activities even after benefits end. If Washington triggers Extended Benefits later, you'll need to show you've been actively looking for work.

Samuel Robinson
•Good point. I'll keep logging my job searches just in case.

Final reminder: don't give up on contacting Washington ESD directly. Even if it's hard to get through, they're the only ones who can give you definitive answers about your specific situation and what benefits you might qualify for.

•Definitely try that Claimyr thing if you can't get through normally. Seems like it actually works.

•I'm going to try calling this week. Need to know exactly where I stand before I run out of time.
