Washington ESD unemployment benefits how long does it take to get approved?
I submitted my unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website last Tuesday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to get approved and start receiving benefits. My work hours were cut completely due to business closure and I've never filed for unemployment before. The website says my claim is 'under review' but doesn't give any timeframe. I'm getting really anxious about paying my rent next month. Has anyone gone through this recently and can tell me what to expect?

It really depends on your situation. If your claim is straightforward with no issues, Washington ESD usually processes it within 2-3 weeks. But if there are any complications or they need additional information, it can take much longer.

•What kind of complications? I reported everything accurately on my application.

•Things like employment verification, wage discrepancies, or if you quit vs were laid off. Even small issues can trigger adjudication which adds weeks to the process.

Mine took 4 weeks last year and that was considered normal. The waiting period can be brutal especially when you need the money NOW.

•Four weeks?? I was hoping for something faster. Did you have any issues or was it just standard processing time?

•No issues, just their normal timeline. I kept checking my account obsessively but it didn't make it go any faster lol

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Is this legitimate? I'm desperate to talk to someone about my claim but I don't want to get scammed.

•Yeah it's real. They basically call Washington ESD for you and get you through to an agent. I was skeptical too but it actually worked when I needed to resolve an issue with my weekly claims.

•I've heard of this too. Friend of mine used it when her claim got stuck in adjudication.

The whole system is a joke honestly. They make you jump through hoops and then take forever to process anything. I've been waiting 6 weeks for my adjudication to complete.

•Six weeks?! What happened with your claim?

•Some issue with my previous employer disputing my reason for leaving. Now I'm stuck in limbo while they investigate something that should be obvious.

While you're waiting, make sure you're filing your weekly claims even if you haven't been approved yet. You won't get paid for weeks you don't file, even retroactively.

•Good point, I've been doing that. The system lets me file even though my claim isn't approved yet.

•This is important! I missed two weeks because I thought I had to wait for approval first. Big mistake.

Keep in mind there's also a one week waiting period before benefits start, so even if approved immediately you won't get paid for your first week.

•Really? So even if everything goes perfectly I'm looking at 3-4 weeks minimum before any money?

Giovanni Ricci
•Exactly. It's called the waiting week and it's built into the system. Plan accordingly.

I work at a nonprofit and we see people struggling with this all the time. If you're really desperate, look into local food banks and emergency assistance programs while you wait.

•Thanks, that's actually helpful. I hadn't thought about food banks but every little bit helps right now.

Just an update on that Claimyr thing I mentioned - I used it again last week when I had questions about my job search requirements. Got through to an agent in about 10 minutes instead of spending all day calling. Worth checking out if you need to speak with someone at Washington ESD.

•How much does it cost? I'm already broke from not working.

•I don't want to quote prices since they might change, but it was reasonable considering how much time and frustration it saved me. Check their website for current info.

Been through this twice now. First time took 3 weeks, second time took 6 weeks because they flagged something about my work history. There's no rhyme or reason to their timeline.

•What got flagged about your work history? I'm worried mine might have issues too.

•They questioned whether I was actually laid off or if I quit. Had to provide documentation from my employer to prove it was a layoff due to lack of work.

The key is staying on top of any requests for information. If Washington ESD asks for documents or clarification, respond immediately. Delays on your end add to the processing time.

•Good advice. I check my account daily and haven't seen any requests yet.

•Also check your email and physical mail. They don't always put everything in the online account.

mine was approved in 10 days but i had a really straightforward case - clear layoff, good work history, no complications

•That gives me hope! My situation is pretty straightforward too - business closed permanently.

•Business closures are usually processed faster since there's less room for dispute about the reason for unemployment.

Remember that even after approval, there can be delays in getting your debit card or setting up direct deposit. Factor that into your timeline too.

Andre Lefebvre
•How long does the debit card take to arrive?
0 coins
CyberSiren
•Usually 7-10 business days after your first payment is processed. Direct deposit is faster if you can set that up.

The system has definitely improved since COVID but it's still not great. Just be patient and keep filing your weekly claims.

•I'll keep doing that. Thanks everyone for all the helpful information!

One more thing about Claimyr - they were super helpful when I needed to understand why my claim was taking so long. The agent was able to see notes in my file that explained the delay. Sometimes just knowing what's happening makes the wait more bearable.

•That's exactly what I need - just to know what's going on with my claim. I might give them a try.

•I was skeptical about services like this but honestly Washington ESD's phone system is so frustrating that I get why people use them.

For what it's worth, I think 2-4 weeks is the realistic expectation for most people. Anything faster is lucky, anything longer usually means there's an issue that needs resolution.

•That seems to be the consensus from everyone here. I'll try to be patient for another week or two.

Don't forget about the job search requirements once you start getting benefits. You'll need to be actively looking for work and documenting it.

•Yes, I've been keeping track of my job applications already. Better to start early than scramble later.

•Smart approach. The job search log requirements can catch people off guard if they're not prepared.

Hang in there. The waiting is the worst part but once things get rolling it becomes more routine. You'll get through this.

If it helps, you can always try calling Washington ESD directly early in the morning or late in the afternoon when call volume might be lower. Though honestly that Claimyr service mentioned earlier sounds like it might be more reliable.

•I've tried calling a few times with no luck. I think I'll look into that service if I need to talk to someone soon.

Just keep checking your account regularly and stay patient. The money will come, it just takes time for the bureaucracy to do its thing.
