Washington ESD unemployment benefits after layoff - how quickly can I get approved?
Just got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job after 2 years. My manager said it was due to company downsizing, nothing performance related. I've never filed for unemployment when laid off before and honestly don't know where to start with Washington ESD. How long does it usually take to get approved? I have rent due in 2 weeks and I'm starting to panic about money. Can I file online or do I need to call them? Any tips for someone who's never done this before?

You can file online at esd.wa.gov which is way easier than calling. Since you were laid off (not fired for cause), you should qualify for benefits. File ASAP because there's a waiting week before payments start. You'll need your social security number, employer info, and dates of employment. The whole process takes about 15-20 minutes online.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait until I get my final paycheck to file or can I do it now?

•You can file now. They'll ask for your last day worked and last day paid, so just use those dates even if you haven't received the final check yet.

filed last month after getting laid off from boeing. took about 3 weeks to get first payment but that was because of some verification stuff. if your layoff is straightforward it should be faster

•What kind of verification stuff? I'm worried they'll find some reason to deny me.

I had terrible luck trying to get through to Washington ESD by phone when I was laid off. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. I actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Basically they handle the calling and connect you when they get through. Saved me so much frustration.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already worried about money.

•It's worth checking out their pricing on the site. For me it was definitely worth it since I was wasting entire days trying to call myself. Plus they got me connected same day I used them.

•Never heard of that service but honestly might be worth it. I spent 3 days calling Washington ESD last year and never got through once.

Make sure you have all your employment documentation ready when you file. Washington ESD will want to verify everything with your employer, so having accurate dates and wage information speeds up the process. Also start looking for work immediately because you'll need to report your job search activities on your weekly claims.

•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week? I heard it was 3 but someone else told me 5.

•It's currently 3 job search activities per week in Washington. Can be applications, networking, job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records because they audit these.

OMG I was in the exact same situation 6 months ago!!! Getting laid off is so stressful but unemployment really helped me get through it. The first payment took like 2-3 weeks but after that it was every week like clockwork. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time - I think the cutoff is Saturday night each week.

•How much did you get per week if you don't mind me asking? Trying to figure out my budget.

•It depends on your wages from the last year. I was making about $45k and got around $480 per week. There's a calculator on the Washington ESD website that gives you an estimate.

One important thing - make sure you understand the difference between being laid off and being fired for cause. Layoffs due to lack of work or company downsizing are almost always approved. Being fired for misconduct is much harder to get benefits for. Since you said it was downsizing, you should be fine.

•Yeah my manager was really clear it wasn't my fault. They eliminated 3 positions including mine. Will that help my case?

Jake Sinclair
•Absolutely. Mass layoffs are very straightforward for Washington ESD to approve. Keep any documentation you have about the layoff just in case.

The waiting week is such BS! Why do they make you wait a whole week before payments start when you're already struggling financially? This system is so messed up.

Vera Visnjic
•Wait, what's the waiting week? I thought I'd get paid right away once approved.

Jake Sinclair
•The waiting week means your first week of unemployment won't be paid, but every week after that will be. So if you file this week, you won't get paid for this week but will get paid starting next week.

•It's just another way they try to discourage people from filing. Really unfair when you're already in a tough spot financially.

Pro tip: if you run into any issues with your claim or need to check status, don't waste time trying to call Washington ESD directly. The phone lines are always jammed. I mentioned Claimyr earlier - they're really good at getting through to agents when you actually need to talk to someone. Much better than sitting on hold for hours.

•is that like a paid service or something? how does it work exactly

Honorah King
•Yeah it's a paid service but they handle all the calling for you. You just tell them what you need help with and they get you connected to the right person at Washington ESD. Check out their demo video I linked earlier.

Update: I just filed online and it was actually pretty easy! Took about 20 minutes like someone said. Now I just have to wait for them to process it. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly. Thanks everyone for the advice!

•Great job getting it filed quickly! You should get a confirmation number - save that somewhere safe.

•Awesome! The hardest part is over. Now just wait for the determination letter and start doing your job searches.

Since you filed today, you should start receiving weekly claim forms on Sunday. These need to be completed every week to continue receiving benefits. The questions are pretty straightforward - did you look for work, did you work any hours, are you available for work, etc.

•What happens if I miss filing a weekly claim? Like if I'm out of town or something?

•You can file up to 4 weeks late but you won't get paid for any weeks you don't file. Better to file on time every week. You can do it online or by phone.

Just remember that unemployment is temporary assistance, not permanent income. Use this time to really focus on finding your next job. The job market is actually pretty good right now, especially in warehousing and logistics.

•Yeah I'm definitely planning to look for work right away. Just need something to bridge the gap until I find something.

•That's the right attitude. And don't be picky at first - any job is better than no job when you have bills to pay.

one more thing - if your claim gets stuck in adjudication for some reason, that's when you might need to call them. mine got held up because they wanted to verify something with my employer. took forever to get through on the phone

Vera Visnjic
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.
0 coins
Mary Bates
•Adjudication is just when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim. Usually it's routine stuff like verifying employment or separation reason. Most claims don't go through adjudication.

Honorah King
•This is exactly when Claimyr comes in handy. If you get stuck in adjudication and need to talk to someone, they can get you through to an agent who can explain what's happening and what you need to do.

The whole system is designed to be confusing and frustrating. They probably hope people just give up and stop filing. Don't let them discourage you - you paid into this system through your taxes and you deserve the benefits.

•It's really not as bad as some people make it seem. The online system works pretty well most of the time. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine.

Oh and don't forget to set up direct deposit if you want your payments electronically! Way faster than waiting for a check in the mail. You can do it through your SecureAccess Washington account.

Vera Visnjic
•Good tip! I'll definitely set that up. How long does it take for direct deposit to kick in?

•I think it was like 1-2 business days after I set it up. Much better than waiting for paper checks.

Final piece of advice - keep copies of everything. Your application, any correspondence from Washington ESD, your job search logs, everything. If there are ever any issues, you'll want that documentation.

Vera Visnjic
•Will do. Should I print stuff out or is keeping digital copies okay?
0 coins
Jake Sinclair
•Digital copies are fine as long as you have them organized and accessible. I keep a folder on my computer with all my unemployment stuff.

Hope everything works out for you! Getting laid off sucks but unemployment benefits really do help bridge the gap. And remember, if you need to talk to Washington ESD for any reason, services like Claimyr can save you a lot of time and frustration with their phone system.
