How do you get unemployment checks from Washington ESD - complete beginner
I just got laid off from my warehouse job after 2 years and I have no idea how to get unemployment checks. My manager said I should be eligible but I don't know where to start. Do I just go to the Washington ESD office or is there a website? How long does it take to get approved and start receiving money? I've never been unemployed before so this is all new to me. Any help would be appreciated!

You need to file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov. Don't go to an office - everything is done online now. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information from your last job including dates and wages. The process takes about 30-45 minutes to complete.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the dates I worked?

StarSailor
•Dates and approximate wages are usually enough. The system will verify your wages with employers automatically.

After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. This is super important - you have to do this even during your waiting week. You'll also need to do job search activities and log them in your WorkSourceWA account.

•What's a waiting week? And how many jobs do I need to apply to each week?
0 coins
Dmitry Ivanov
•Waiting week is the first week you file - you won't get paid for that week. For job search, you need 3 job search activities per week minimum, documented in WorkSourceWA.

•Actually it's been reduced to 2 job search activities per week in most cases, not 3.

Just went through this process last month. Be prepared to wait - my claim took 6 weeks to get approved because it went into adjudication. Had such a hard time getting through to anyone at Washington ESD to check on the status. I finally found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•6 weeks?? I was hoping to get money in like 2 weeks. What's adjudication?

Miguel Silva
•Adjudication is when they need to investigate something about your claim - like if your employer contests it or there's missing information. It can take weeks or months unfortunately.

•Never heard of Claimyr before. How much does it cost?

•I'd rather not get into pricing details here, but it was worth it for me to finally talk to someone instead of calling hundreds of times and getting hung up on.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A NIGHTMARE! I've been trying to get my claim processed for 8 weeks now and keep getting the runaround. They ask for documents then lose them, then ask for the same documents again. I'm about to lose my apartment because I can't pay rent!

•I'm sorry you're going through this. Have you tried uploading documents through your eServices account instead of mailing them?

Connor O'Neill
•Yes I've tried everything. The online system keeps giving me error messages when I try to upload anything.

For everyone reading this - make sure you have a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account set up before you start. That's how you'll access your unemployment account. Also keep detailed records of everything - screenshots, confirmation numbers, dates you called, etc.

•What's SAW? Is that different from the Washington ESD website?
0 coins
StarSailor
•SAW is the login system for all Washington state services. You'll use it to access your unemployment account on the Washington ESD site.

•Good advice about keeping records. I wish someone had told me that when I started.

Quick question - do you get paid weekly or every two weeks? And how much can you expect to get?
0 coins
Dmitry Ivanov
•Weekly payments if you file your weekly claim on time. The amount depends on your wages from the last 18 months. There's a calculator on the Washington ESD website.

Ava Garcia
•Thanks! I'll check out the calculator.

been on unemployment 3 times over the years and it gets easier each time. first time is always confusing but once you get the hang of filing weekly claims it becomes routine. just make sure you never miss a week or you'll have to start over

•What happens if you accidentally miss filing a weekly claim?

Yara Nassar
•you can usually file a late claim but it's a hassle and might delay your payments. better to set a reminder on your phone

StarSailor
•Actually you don't have to start over if you miss a week, but you may need to explain why you missed it.

One thing no one mentioned - you need to be able and available for work each week. That means you can't be sick, on vacation, or otherwise unable to work when you file your weekly claim.

•What if you get sick for a few days? Do you lose your benefits?

Keisha Williams
•For short illnesses you might still qualify, but longer periods could affect your eligibility. You have to answer honestly on your weekly claim.

My cousin used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and said it saved her weeks of frustration. She was stuck in adjudication and couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD. Worth looking into if you're having phone troubles.

•How does it work exactly? Do they call for you?

Paolo Ricci
•From what she told me, they help you get through the phone system and connect you with an actual agent. She watched their demo video and decided to try it.

Don't forget about the work search requirements! You need to create a WorkSourceWA account and log all your job search activities there. This includes applications, networking, job fairs, etc.

Sofia Morales
•Is WorkSourceWA a separate website from the unemployment site?
0 coins
Oliver Zimmermann
•Yes, it's worksourcewa.com. You'll need both accounts - one for filing claims and one for job search tracking.

•This is getting confusing with all these different websites and accounts...

I know it seems overwhelming but it's really not that bad once you get started. The key is to file your initial claim as soon as possible after you lose your job. Don't wait because there's usually a waiting period anyway.

Sofia Morales
•How soon after getting laid off should I file?
0 coins
Natasha Volkova
•Immediately if possible. You can file the same day you lose your job. Benefits start from when you file, not when you lost your job.

Also make sure you understand the difference between being laid off and being fired. If you were fired for misconduct you might not qualify for benefits.

Sofia Morales
•I was laid off due to lack of work, not fired. Should be okay right?
0 coins
Javier Torres
•Yes, that should qualify you for benefits assuming you meet the other requirements.

One more tip - set up direct deposit! Getting checks in the mail takes forever and they sometimes get lost. Direct deposit is much faster and more reliable.

Sofia Morales
•Can I set up direct deposit during the initial application?

Emma Davis
•Yes, there should be an option for that when you file your claim. You'll need your bank routing and account numbers.

Reading all this makes me grateful I never had to deal with unemployment. Sounds like a bureaucratic nightmare honestly.

•It can be frustrating but most people do eventually get their benefits. The system just wasn't designed for high volume.

Last piece of advice - be patient but persistent. If your claim gets stuck, keep trying different ways to contact Washington ESD. Don't just wait and hope it gets resolved on its own.

Actually I tried Claimyr too when I was stuck and it really did help. Was skeptical at first but desperate times call for desperate measures. Got connected to an agent within a few days instead of weeks of calling myself.

•Yeah definitely keep it as a backup option if the regular phone lines aren't working out.

Just want to add that you should also sign up for job alerts and career counseling through WorkSource. They have good resources beyond just the job search logging requirement.

Sofia Morales
•Are those services free?

Omar Fawaz
•Yes, all WorkSource services are free. They can help with resume writing, interview skills, training programs, etc.
