Washington ESD benefits affected by 2025 federal unemployment tax rate changes?
I'm trying to understand if the 2025 federal unemployment tax rate changes will impact my Washington ESD benefits at all. My employer mentioned something about FUTA rates but I'm not sure if that affects what I receive as a claimant. I've been on unemployment for about 6 weeks now and wondering if there's going to be any change to my weekly benefit amount or duration. Has anyone heard anything from Washington ESD about this?

The federal unemployment tax (FUTA) rate is what employers pay, not something that directly affects your individual benefit amount. Your Washington ESD weekly benefit is calculated based on your past wages, not the tax rate employers pay into the system.

•Oh okay, so my $485 weekly benefit won't change because of the federal tax rate? That's a relief.

•Right, your benefit amount is locked in when your claim is established. The FUTA rate mainly affects the trust fund balance.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and can never reach anyone. The phone system is impossible! Does anyone know the current FUTA rate anyway?

•I had the same problem calling Washington ESD until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to ESD agents - check out claimyr.com and their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Way easier than sitting on hold forever.

•Thanks! I'll definitely look into that. I've wasted so many hours trying to call.

•The federal rate for 2025 is 6% on the first $7,000 of wages, but most employers get a credit that brings it down to 0.6% if the state has no outstanding federal loans.

Washington state's unemployment trust fund is in good shape so employers here should still get the full FUTA credit in 2025. Some states lost their credit during COVID but WA maintained theirs.

•That's good news for employers I guess. Does that mean our benefits are more secure?

•Generally yes - a healthy trust fund means less pressure to cut benefits or raise eligibility requirements.

Wait I'm confused... is this about the tax WE pay on unemployment benefits or what employers pay?

•FUTA is what employers pay to fund the unemployment system. You as a claimant don't pay FUTA, but you might owe income tax on your benefits depending on your total income.

•Ah got it, thanks for clarifying!

My company's HR department has been complaining about unemployment taxes going up this year but I thought that was state taxes, not federal.

•You're probably right - many states did raise their State Unemployment Tax (SUTA) rates after depleting trust funds during the pandemic. Federal FUTA has been pretty stable.

•Yeah Washington ESD did adjust some employer rates based on experience ratings and trust fund needs.

This is all way over my head lol. I just want to make sure my benefits don't get cut while I'm job searching.

•Same here! The job search requirements are stressful enough without worrying about benefit changes.

•Don't worry - these tax rate discussions usually don't affect current claimants. Your benefits are determined when you file your initial claim.

The 6% FUTA rate hasn't changed in years, it's the state portions that fluctuate. But honestly if you need to talk to Washington ESD about your specific situation, good luck getting through on the phone!

•Actually I used Claimyr last month and got connected to an ESD agent in like 10 minutes. Saved me hours of calling and redialing.

For anyone wondering about taxes ON unemployment benefits (not the employer taxes): unemployment income is taxable federally and you can choose to have 10% withheld when you certify.

•Good point! I forgot to have taxes withheld and ended up owing at tax time.

•Washington state doesn't have income tax so at least we don't worry about that part.

So bottom line - the federal unemployment tax rate stuff is employer-side and shouldn't affect our benefit amounts or eligibility?

•Correct. FUTA funds the federal portion of the UI system but your Washington ESD benefits come from state taxes and are calculated based on your wage history.

•Thanks for the clear explanation! I was getting worried for nothing.

My accountant mentioned something about federal extensions being tied to unemployment rates and trust fund levels. Could changes in FUTA affect extended benefits programs?

Hugo Kass
•Extended benefits programs like EB are triggered by state unemployment rates, not tax rates. Though trust fund health can influence policy decisions about extensions.

•Good to know! I'm hoping I find work before needing any extensions anyway.

I work in payroll and can confirm the 2025 FUTA rate is still 6% on first $7,000 of wages, with the 5.4% credit available for most employers. Nothing new there.

If you're really concerned about benefit changes, the best thing is to call Washington ESD directly. Though like others said, that's easier said than done with their phone system...
