Quick ESD payment without decision letter - is this normal or potential overpayment risk?

So I'm honestly a little surprised and nervous about how quickly my husband's unemployment claim was processed. He was laid off from his construction management position last month and his waiting week was the first week of January 2025. He filed his second weekly claim last Sunday (the first one eligible for payment), and the money was already deposited in our account by Wednesday! We haven't received any decision letter or official approval notification from ESD. Everything just... worked? After hearing so many horror stories about the unemployment system, I'm paranoid this is too good to be true and we might end up with an overpayment situation down the road. Has anyone else experienced such a quick turnaround without any formal approval letter? Should we hold off on using the money until we get something official? His benefit amount shows as $1,125/week which seems right based on his previous salary, but I'm still anxious about it.

This is actually completely normal and how the system is supposed to work when everything aligns correctly! ESD has drastically improved their processing times since the pandemic. When there are no flags on the account (like identity verification issues, employer disputes, or job separation questions), payments can process very quickly after the waiting week. You will eventually receive a monetary determination letter that confirms the weekly benefit amount, but they often send these electronically through your eServices account rather than by mail. Have you checked the "Letters" section in his online account? The $1,125 weekly benefit is within the normal range for Washington (the max is $1,152 in 2025), so if his previous earnings qualify him for that amount, it sounds like the system is working as intended. Just make sure he continues to complete his weekly claims and meets the three job search activities requirement each week!

Thank you so much for the reassurance! I just checked his eServices account and there is indeed a monetary determination letter there from last week that we somehow missed. It confirms the $1,125 amount. I guess I was just expecting more bureaucracy and delays based on what friends went through a few years ago. It's nice to hear the system is working better now!

THIS. The ESD system is totally designed to trip people up. They'll pay you fast at first to make you THINK everything is fine, then come back later with some BS issue that wasn't your fault. I've been fighting an overpayment for 6 months now because they say I reported my hours wrong even though I KNOW I entered everything correctly. Their system just randomly flagged me. Document EVERYTHING.

It's definitely possible to get paid quickly when everything in the system lines up correctly. However, I would strongly recommend a few precautionary steps: 1. Check your husband's eServices account weekly for any new notices or letters 2. Print or save PDF copies of all weekly claim confirmations 3. Keep a detailed job search log with all required information for each activity 4. Save documentation of the layoff (separation notice, etc.) 5. Set aside a portion of each payment if possible, just in case there's an issue later One thing to watch for - sometimes employers don't respond to ESD's initial inquiries within the timeframe, so ESD approves the claim. Then later the employer contests it, which can trigger an investigation or potential overpayment notice. Not trying to worry you, just suggesting being prepared!

This is really helpful advice, thank you. I'm definitely going to implement all of these steps. We're already keeping track of his job search activities in detail, but I hadn't thought about saving the weekly claim confirmations too. Better safe than sorry!

had same happen 2 me too! got paid super fast, no problems for like 2 months. then they needed more info about why i left my last job. everything worked out fine tho. just keep doing the weekly claims and make SURE he does all 3 job search things every week!!!!!!

I had the opposite experience trying to reach ESD when my claim got stuck in adjudication for 6 weeks! Called literally 30+ times and couldn't get through. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 showing how it works. Might be worth bookmarking in case you do run into issues later and need to talk to someone. But honestly, it sounds like your husband's claim is processing normally! The system works great when there are no complications. Hopefully it stays that way for you!

Yeah it's legit - I was skeptical too but it worked for me when I was desperate. They basically keep dialing for you through all the phone tree options until they get through. Saved me hours of frustration, but hopefully the original poster won't need it if their claim keeps processing smoothly.

One other thing to keep in mind - make sure your husband understands the job search requirements. He needs to complete and document 3 job search activities each week. This is the #1 reason people end up with overpayments later - they don't realize they need to be actively searching for work, or they don't properly document their search activities. The good news is that the system is working as designed in your case! Just follow the rules, keep good records, and everything should continue smoothly.

Yes, we're definitely on top of the job search requirements! He's actually had two interviews already and is keeping detailed notes of all contacts and applications. Thanks again for the reassurance!

btw did ur husband get the extra $35 for dependents? i have 2 kids and it took FOREVER to get that added to my weekly amount

We don't have kids, so that doesn't apply to us. I didn't even know there was an extra amount for dependents! That's good information though, thanks for mentioning it.

The dependent allowance is actually $20 per dependent (maximum of $40 per week) in Washington for 2025. It requires separate verification and doesn't automatically get added - you have to specifically request it when you apply. For anyone reading who has dependents, make sure to check the dependent allowance box during your initial application!
