Partial ESD approval but 'disqualified' for payments - can I get back pay for multiple employer confusion?
After 8 excruciating weeks stuck in adjudication, my claim FINALLY got processed but I'm totally confused about what's happening now. When I check eServices, it shows my claim as 'approved' but all my weekly payments are marked as 'disqualified'?? Here's what happened: I was working two jobs - my main 40hr/week position at a marketing agency, and a weekend gig teaching community art classes one day a week. In March, I got laid off from my marketing job during a company restructure (no misconduct). That SAME WEEK, the art studio also let me go because they scheduled mandatory weekend training during hours I was supposed to be at my main job (which I didn't have anymore, but they didn't know that yet). ESD approved my claim for the marketing job but denied it for the art studio job. The determination letter says something about 'voluntary quit' for the art position which is NOT true - I literally got fired from both places in the same week! I'm supposed to be eligible for $876/week and I'm owed like $7,000 in back payments at this point. Will I actually see any of that money or am I screwed because of this weird split decision? Do I need to appeal the art studio part even though it was just a tiny part of my income?

The good news is that if your main employer claim was approved, you should be eligible for benefits based on that employment alone. The 'disqualified' status for payments usually has to do with a timing issue or some other technical flag in the system - not necessarily related to the split decision on your employers. I recommend checking whether you've completed all your weekly certifications correctly. Many times, a single question answered incorrectly (like availability for work or job search activities) can trigger a disqualification for that week. Also make sure you've uploaded your job search logs if required. If everything looks correct on your end, you should call ESD to ask specifically why the payments show as disqualified despite your claim being approved. They can usually resolve this kind of disconnect quickly once you reach them.

•Thanks for responding! I've double-checked all my weekly certifications and I'm 99% sure I answered everything correctly. I said YES to available for work, NO to refusing any work, YES to actively seeking work, etc. I've also been keeping detailed job search logs with 3+ activities per week. Do you think this could be some kind of system glitch? The timing is what's throwing me off - the approval and disqualification happened on the same day.

this is EXACTLY wat happend to my brother-in-law last yr!!! the system is totally broken. he waited almost 3 months and never got a penny even tho his claim said approved. i think u need 2 appeal the art studio decision even if it was only a small part of ur income. they use any excuse to deny u $$$

•Oh no, that's really discouraging to hear! Did your brother-in-law ever get it resolved? I'm already struggling to pay rent and bills after 2 months with no income. I'll definitely look into appealing, but I'm worried that will just delay things even more...

From my experience working with claims like yours, this situation is actually fairly common with multiple employers. Here's what's likely happening: Your claim is approved overall (based on the marketing job), but the system might be incorrectly applying the disqualification from the art studio job to your entire benefit amount. You should definitely receive benefits based on your marketing job earnings, since that separation was approved. The disqualification from the art studio job should only affect the portion of benefits calculated from that employment. I recommend doing the following: 1. Check your monetary determination letter carefully - it should show earnings from both employers and the calculated weekly benefit amount 2. Look for any flags or pending issues in your eServices account under "Decisions" or "Alerts" 3. Contact ESD directly to have them review why payments are showing disqualified when your primary claim was approved This is likely a technical processing issue that needs human intervention to correct. Don't wait too long to address it, as ESD can be slow to resolve back pay issues.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I just checked my monetary determination letter again and you're right - it does show both employers with their respective earnings. My main marketing job accounts for about 90% of the calculated benefit amount. I've been trying to contact ESD for weeks with no luck. The phone line just disconnects me after the automated message about high call volume. I've also sent messages through the eServices portal but haven't received any response. Any tips on actually getting through to a human being there?

I went through something similar with multiple employers and what fixed it for me was getting through to an actual claims specialist who could override the system issue. After weeks of trying to call ESD directly with no luck, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have this system that helps you get through the ESD phone queue without waiting for hours or getting disconnected. I was super skeptical but they actually got me connected with an ESD agent within 30 minutes. The agent was able to see that my payments were incorrectly marked as disqualified due to the system misapplying a decision from one employer to my entire claim. They fixed it while I was on the phone and my back pay was released 2 days later. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Definitely worth it to get this resolved quickly rather than waiting another 8 weeks for ESD to maybe notice the problem.

•Yes, it worked for me and several people I know. The key difference is they have technology that navigates the phone system and holds your place in line. When they secure a spot with an actual agent, they call you to connect. Much better than hitting redial for days.

im confused about one thing - u said u got let go from the art place because u couldn't attend training during ur regular full-time work hours. but if u were already laid off from the marketing job, couldn't u have gone to the art place training? maybe thats why they're calling it voluntary?

•I should have been clearer - both happened in the SAME WEEK but not on the same day. I was laid off from marketing on Tuesday, then the art studio scheduled the mandatory training for Saturday and told me about it on Thursday. When I explained I couldn't make it (I was actually interviewing for another full-time job that day), they let me go on Friday. The timing was just terrible all around.

•This detail is important! In ESD's view, if you were laid off from the marketing job first, and then couldn't attend training at the art studio because of a job interview, that could technically be considered a voluntary separation from the art studio. However, since your main claim from the marketing job was approved, you should still receive benefits - just potentially with an adjustment for the art studio portion.

Just be glad you even got through adjudication!!! My claim has been stuck for 12 WEEKS with no end in sight. I've written my state representative and filed a complaint with the governor's office. The whole system is designed to frustrate people into giving up on their rightful benefits.

•I'm sorry you're still waiting! It's incredibly frustrating. I did contact my state rep around week 6 which might have helped move things along. Might be worth trying that route if you haven't already.

I'm an unemployment advocate, and I've seen this exact issue many times. The problem is that the ESD computer system sometimes incorrectly applies a disqualification from one employer to the entire claim. This is especially true when both separations happened close together. Two important points: 1. You are absolutely entitled to benefits based on your eligible employment (the marketing job). 2. This is 100% a technical issue that requires a claims specialist to manually review and correct in the system. The fastest resolution would be speaking directly with a claims specialist who can see both determinations and fix the payment status. Once corrected, your back payments should be processed within 48-72 hours typically. If you can't get through on the phone, try the Technical Support line (different from the regular claims line) early in the morning (right when they open). They often have shorter wait times and can transfer you to a claims specialist.

•Thank you for confirming this! It's reassuring to know I'm not misunderstanding my eligibility. I'll try the Technical Support line first thing tomorrow morning. If that doesn't work, I might try the Claimyr service someone mentioned above - at this point I'm desperate enough to try anything that might work.

UPDATE: I finally got through to ESD this morning using the Claimyr service someone recommended here. The claims specialist confirmed exactly what you all suspected - the system incorrectly applied the disqualification from my art studio job to my entire claim! The specialist was able to fix it right on the call and said my back payments should process within 3-5 business days. She also said I should see the status change from "disqualified" to "paid" in eServices within 24 hours. Thank you all SO MUCH for your help and advice. This has been such a stressful two months, and I'm incredibly relieved to know I'll finally be receiving the benefits I'm entitled to.

•That's great news! Glad you got it resolved. This is a common issue that unfortunately requires speaking with someone who has the authority to override the system. Just make sure to keep checking your account to confirm the payments actually process as promised.

•congrats!! did u have to appeal anything or they just fixed it right away?

•No appeal needed! They fixed it immediately when the specialist saw both determinations in my file. She said it was clearly a system error in how the decisions were applied to my payments.
