Is type 1 diabetes a disability for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?

I've been managing type 1 diabetes for about 8 years now and recently lost my job due to company downsizing. When I was filling out my Washington ESD unemployment application, there was a section about disabilities that might affect my ability to work. I'm not sure if I should report my diabetes or not. My blood sugar is generally well controlled with my insulin pump, but I do have occasional episodes that could affect my work schedule. Does anyone know if type 1 diabetes qualifies as a disability for unemployment purposes in Washington? I don't want to mess up my claim by answering incorrectly.

Type 1 diabetes can be considered a disability under certain circumstances, but it depends on how it affects your ability to work. For Washington ESD purposes, you should be honest about any conditions that might impact your job search or ability to accept work. If your diabetes is well-controlled and doesn't limit your work capacity, you might not need to report it as a work-limiting disability.

That makes sense. My endocrinologist says I'm doing really well with management, so I think I'm okay to work normal hours.

I have type 2 and didn't report it since it doesn't affect my work ability. Just be accurate about what actually limits you.

The key question Washington ESD asks is whether your condition prevents you from being able and available for work. If you can work full-time without restrictions, then you wouldn't need to report it as a disability. However, if you need accommodations like flexible scheduling for medical appointments or have episodes that could affect attendance, that's different.

I do need to see my endo every 3 months and sometimes have urgent appointments if my pump malfunctions. Should I mention that?

Medical appointments alone usually don't qualify as work-limiting. Most employers accommodate routine medical visits.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about a similar question with my own health condition. The phone lines are always busy and I keep getting disconnected. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Thanks! I'll definitely check that out. I'm so frustrated with trying to call them directly.

Claimyr actually worked for me too when I had adjudication issues. Way better than spending hours on hold.

Just be careful about what you report. I made the mistake of over-sharing about my health issues and it caused delays in my claim processing. They had to do additional verification.

0 coins

What kind of delays did you experience? I definitely don't want to complicate my claim unnecessarily.

0 coins

They put my claim into adjudication for like 6 weeks while they reviewed medical documentation. Was a nightmare.

I have type 1 diabetes too and work in healthcare. When I was on unemployment last year, I didn't report it as a disability because it doesn't prevent me from working. I just manage it like any other chronic condition. If you can do your job normally, you're probably fine not reporting it.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear from someone with the same condition. Did you have any issues with your weekly claims?

0 coins

No issues at all. Just made sure to keep up with my job search requirements and filed my weekly claims on time.

The Washington ESD disability question is really about work limitations, not just having a medical condition. Think about whether your diabetes actually prevents you from accepting job offers or limits the types of work you can do.

0 coins

That's a good way to think about it. I can do pretty much any office work or even physical jobs as long as I monitor my blood sugar.

Exactly. I have a friend with diabetes who works construction. It's all about management and self-awareness.

been dealing with this stuff for years and the system is so confusing!! why cant they just make it clear what counts as a disability and what doesnt

0 coins

I agree the guidance could be clearer. The general rule is that if your condition doesn't prevent you from working, you don't need to report it as a work-limiting disability.

thanks that helps. just dont want to mess up my benefits over something stupid

From what I understand, Washington ESD follows ADA guidelines for what constitutes a disability. Type 1 diabetes can qualify under ADA, but for unemployment purposes, it's more about functional limitations than medical diagnosis.

0 coins

That distinction makes sense. My diabetes is well-managed so I don't think it functionally limits my work abilities.

0 coins

Right, there's a difference between having a medical condition and having a disability that affects work capacity.

I work for a company that does disability accommodations and I can tell you that most people with well-controlled diabetes don't need workplace accommodations. If you don't need accommodations, you probably don't need to report it to Washington ESD either.

That's really helpful perspective from someone who works in that field. I appreciate the insight.

Good point. I think I over-complicated my situation when I was filing.

If you're unsure, you could always call Washington ESD and ask them directly. Though good luck getting through - I've been trying for days.

That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. It's been a game-changer for actually reaching Washington ESD agents when you need answers to specific questions like this.

I'll have to look into that. The regular phone system is impossible.

My sister has type 1 and she never reported it when she was on unemployment a couple years ago. No problems with her claim at all.

0 coins

Good to know! It sounds like as long as it's well-managed, it shouldn't be an issue.

The bottom line is: can you work? If yes, then you're able and available for work, which is what Washington ESD cares about. Having a medical condition that you manage successfully doesn't change that.

0 coins

That's exactly what I needed to hear. I can definitely work, so I think I'm overthinking this.

0 coins

You're not overthinking - it's good to be careful with these applications. But sounds like you're in good shape.

0 coins

honestly the washington esd system is broken anyway. half the time they dont even look at what you put on the forms

While the system has issues, it's still important to answer questions accurately. Better to be honest than risk problems later.

yeah youre probably right. just frustrated with the whole process

I have a different chronic condition and went through this same decision process. I ended up not reporting it because it doesn't affect my ability to work. Been getting benefits without any issues for 2 months now.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's helpful to hear from people who've been in similar situations.

Just make sure whatever you decide, you're consistent if they ask follow-up questions. Don't overthink it but be prepared to explain your reasoning.

0 coins

Good advice. I think I'm going to not report it since it doesn't limit my work ability, but I'll be ready to explain if asked.

That sounds like a reasonable approach based on your situation.

Agreed - good luck with your claim! You should be fine.
