Depression as disability for Washington ESD unemployment benefits - need guidance
I've been dealing with severe depression for the past year and my therapist says it's affecting my ability to work consistently. I lost my job at a retail store because I kept missing shifts due to panic attacks and couldn't handle the stress. Now I'm trying to figure out if depression counts as a disability when filing for unemployment with Washington ESD. I'm worried about the job search requirements because some days I can barely leave my apartment. Has anyone dealt with this situation? Do I need special documentation or can I just explain my condition when I file my weekly claims?

Depression can definitely qualify as a disability for unemployment purposes in Washington. You'll need medical documentation from your therapist or doctor stating how your condition affects your ability to work. When you file your claim, there's a section where you can indicate you have a disability that limits your job search activities.

•Thank you! Do I need to get a specific form from my therapist or will a regular note work?

•A detailed letter explaining your limitations should work, but make sure it's on official letterhead and includes specific restrictions.

I went through this exact situation last year. The key is being upfront about your condition when you file. Washington ESD has accommodations for people with disabilities including modified job search requirements. You might only need to do 1-2 job contacts per week instead of the usual 3.

•That's really helpful to know. Did you have any issues getting approved initially?

•It took about 3 weeks for adjudication but once they reviewed my medical records everything went smoothly.

Just went through calling Washington ESD about a similar issue and couldn't get through for days. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual person to discuss my disability accommodations. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Super helpful for getting real answers about complex situations like this.

•I've been trying to call for a week with no luck. How much does that service cost?

•It's worth checking out their site for details. Way less frustrating than spending hours on hold just to get disconnected.

•I used Claimyr too when I had questions about my PTSD affecting my claim. Really made the process easier.

Wait, I'm confused about something. If you have depression that prevents you from working, wouldn't you qualify for disability benefits instead of unemployment? I thought unemployment was for people who are able and available to work.

•Common misconception! You can have a disability and still be able to work with accommodations. The key is whether you're seeking and available for suitable work given your limitations.

•Oh that makes sense. I didn't realize there was a difference between totally disabled and having work limitations.

I've been on unemployment for depression-related job loss and the biggest thing is documenting EVERYTHING. Keep records of all your medical appointments, therapy sessions, and how your condition affects your daily life. Washington ESD may ask for additional documentation during the adjudication process.

•Good point about documentation. I should probably start keeping better records of my therapy sessions.

•Definitely. Also ask your therapist about getting a functional capacity evaluation if your case gets complicated.

This is such BS that people have to jump through hoops to get help when they're already struggling. The system should be more understanding of mental health issues.

•I agree it's frustrating but at least Washington has better protections than some states.

•True, could be worse I guess. Still doesn't make it easy when you're already dealing with depression.

Also wanted to mention - make sure you understand the difference between 'able and available' versus 'suitable work.' With depression, you might be able to work but only in certain environments or with specific accommodations. This is important for your job search log.

Luca Bianchi
•Can you explain more about what 'suitable work' means in this context?

GalacticGuardian
•Suitable work takes into account your skills, experience, and any disability-related limitations. So if customer service triggers your anxiety, you might not be required to apply for those jobs.

I had to deal with this when my anxiety got really bad. The WorkSource office was actually pretty helpful in understanding my situation once I explained it properly. They helped me find resources for both job training and mental health support.

•That's encouraging to hear. I haven't contacted WorkSource yet but maybe I should.

•Definitely worth it. They have counselors who specialize in helping people with disabilities navigate the job market.

One thing to be careful about - don't overstate your limitations when filing. I made that mistake and it caused issues later when they questioned whether I was truly available for work. Be honest but focus on what you CAN do with proper support.

Luca Bianchi
•That's a good point. I want to be honest but not hurt my chances of getting approved.

Zoe Christodoulou
•Exactly. Frame it as 'I can work with these accommodations' rather than 'I can't work because of my depression.

Another tip - if you get denied initially, don't give up. I know someone who had to appeal their depression-related claim and eventually won. The key was getting a more detailed assessment from a psychiatrist rather than just therapy notes.

Luca Bianchi
•Good to know appeals are possible. Hopefully it doesn't come to that but it's reassuring.

•Appeals can take months though, so try to get the documentation right the first time if possible.

I'm dealing with bipolar disorder and got approved for unemployment after my last episode caused job loss. The trick was showing that I was stable enough to work but needed accommodations. Got connected with vocational rehabilitation services through the process too.

•That's really helpful to hear from someone with a similar situation. Did you have to do anything special for your weekly claims?

•I had to report my job search activities but with modified requirements. Some weeks I could only do one application if I was having a rough time.

Just want to add that having a case manager or social worker can be really helpful with this process. They often know the ins and outs of the system and can help advocate for you.

•I don't currently have a case manager. How do you find one?

•Contact your local community mental health center. They often have staff who specialize in employment issues.

Update on my earlier comment about Claimyr - I used them again this week to get clarification on my disability accommodations and they were able to connect me with someone who actually understood the rules. Saved me tons of time and stress.

•Definitely worth it if you need to talk to someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

Does anyone know if therapy appointments count as valid reasons for not being available for work on certain days? I have twice weekly sessions that are really important for my stability.

GalacticGuardian
•Medical appointments, including therapy, are generally considered valid reasons for temporary unavailability. Just document them properly in your records.

•Thank you! I was worried about having to reschedule my appointments around potential job interviews.

The hardest part for me was explaining to potential employers why I left my last job. Some places are understanding about mental health, others... not so much. But that's a whole other conversation.

Luca Bianchi
•I'm dreading that part too. Did you find any good ways to explain it without oversharing?

Giovanni Gallo
•I usually just say I had a medical condition that required time off and my employer couldn't accommodate it. Most don't pry further.

Quick question - if you're on medication for depression, do you need to disclose that during the unemployment process? I'm worried about privacy issues.
0 coins
GalacticGuardian
•You don't need to disclose specific medications, just how your condition affects your ability to work. Medical privacy laws still apply.

•That's a relief. I was worried about having to share too much personal information.

For what it's worth, I was really anxious about this whole process but Washington ESD was more understanding than I expected. The adjudication took a while but they ultimately approved my claim with accommodations.

•Just be honest and provide good documentation. The system isn't perfect but it does work for people who need it.

Last thing I'll add - if you end up needing to appeal or have complex issues, consider getting help from a legal aid organization. Many offer free assistance for unemployment cases involving disabilities.

Luca Bianchi
•Good to know that option exists. Hopefully I won't need it but it's reassuring.

•Better to know about resources before you need them. Good luck with your claim!

I'm going through something very similar right now with anxiety and PTSD. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea about the modified job search requirements or that therapy appointments counted as valid unavailability reasons. It's reassuring to know that Washington ESD does have accommodations for mental health conditions, even though the process seems overwhelming. I'm planning to get documentation from my psychiatrist and contact WorkSource based on the advice here. Thank you all for sharing your experiences - it makes me feel less alone in dealing with this.
