Identity verification stuck in adjudication - waiting week still required in 2025?
So frustrated right now! Filed my unemployment claim last Thursday after getting laid off from my warehouse job (6 years there, gone just like that...). The system immediately flagged me for ID verification which I expected since my last name changed after marriage. I uploaded my social security card and driver's license through the secure document uploader the same day, but my claim still says "adjudication in progress" almost a week later. Two questions: 1) Does anyone know how long the ID verification typically takes in 2025? I remember going through something similar in 2021 but can't remember if I had to call someone or just wait it out. 2) Is the waiting week still a thing this year? I thought I read somewhere they might have eliminated it, but the ESD website is so confusing. I'm worried because rent is due next week and my final paycheck only covered half. Any advice appreciated!

Yes, the waiting week is definitely still required in 2025. It's the first week of your claim where you're eligible but don't get paid. You still need to file a weekly claim for that week though! For the ID verification, mine took about 10 business days to clear earlier this year. The system is backed up because of all the tech layoffs happening. Make sure your documents are clearly visible in the uploads - I had to resubmit mine because my DL photo was too dark.

•Thanks for confirming about the waiting week - ugh, that's gonna hurt financially but at least I know now. 10 business days sounds like forever when you're counting pennies. Did you just wait it out or did you contact them? I'm wondering if I should try calling...

•WRONG INFORMATION! The waiting week IS waived if you're on a Commissioner-Approved Training program or certain union situations. Don't spread misinformation if you don't know the exceptions! ESD's website literally lists all the exceptions if people would bother to read!!!

The ID verification process typically takes 7-14 business days right now according to my WorkSource advisor. The system is overloaded since the aerospace layoffs in March. Yes, the waiting week is still in effect unless you qualify for one of the rare exceptions (Commissioner-Approved Training participants or certain standby situations). One thing that might help - check your secure message center on your ESD account. Sometimes they send requests for additional verification but the email notifications don't always work. I've seen people wait weeks only to discover they needed to send in additional documents.

•Thanks for the tip about checking messages! Just looked and thankfully there's nothing asking for more docs. Guess I just need to be patient. It's stressful not knowing if/when money will start coming in.

I had this EXACT same problem back in january!! My id verification sat in adjudication for like 3 weeks, it was a nightmare! I finally called them and they said my docs were actually approved 2 weeks earlier but the system never updated the status! So I'd been eligible for payment but the computer system messed up. Try calling!

•Good luck with calling though - I tried for TWO WEEKS to get through to someone about my adjudication issue. Always busy signals or disconnects after waiting on hold forever. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is ready. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 My adjudication was resolved in one call once I actually got through to a real person. Some issues they can fix right on the spot.

To directly address your questions: 1) Identity verification timeframes: Currently averaging 8-12 business days as of May 2025. ESD prioritizes these based on claim date and financial hardship indicators. 2) Waiting week: Yes, RCW 50.20.010(1)(c) still requires a waiting week period where you must file a weekly claim but won't receive benefits. This hasn't changed in the 2025 legislative session. Regarding your identity verification: Check that your documents meet these requirements: - Clear, unobstructed view of full document - All four corners visible - No glare or shadows - Matches the name on your claim exactly If it's been more than 10 business days, you can request an escalation through your secure message center. Select "Identity Verification Status" as the subject line.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'll double-check my documents tonight. Just to be clear - even though I'm stuck in adjudication, I should still be filing my weekly claims, right? I don't want to mess anything up.

Yes, absolutely continue filing your weekly claims even during adjudication. This is critical because if/when your identity is verified, they'll pay all eligible weeks that you've properly claimed (minus the waiting week). If you don't file for weeks during adjudication, you can't receive payment for those weeks retroactively.

•This! I missed filing for 1 week during my adjudication nightmare and lost out on $725 that I couldn't get back. Keep filing every single week no matter what!

You should also make sure you're doing your 3 job search activities every week and documenting them! That requirement doesn't go away during adjudication. I learned that the hard way and had to appeal when they tried to deny me benefits retroactively for weeks I didn't do proper job search activities during my ID verification period. What a mess.

•Oh wow, I wasn't aware of that! Thank you - I haven't been looking because I figured I'd wait until the ID verification was done. Going to start applying for jobs tomorrow!

I used Claimyr last month and it was amazing! Got through to ESD in 40 minutes after trying for days on my own with no luck. The agent told me the ID verification can actually be fast-tracked if you have a financial hardship (eviction risk, utilities about to be shut off, etc). You just have to talk to the right department. Worth trying if you're in a tight spot with rent coming up.

Just to add clarity on the waiting week: it applies to your first eligible week after filing. If your claim is in adjudication for ID verification, your waiting week hasn't technically started yet because you're not considered eligible until the ID verification is complete. Once your identity is verified, the first payable week will be your waiting week (no payment), then you'll receive benefits for subsequent weeks if you continue to qualify. This is why it's crucial to keep filing weekly claims during adjudication - the system will retroactively assign your waiting week and pay for eligible weeks once identity verification is complete.

•Thank you for explaining this! The ESD website is so unclear about how adjudication affects the waiting week. I'll keep filing my weekly claims and hopefully this gets sorted out soon.
