ID verification cleared but 5 weeks stuck in adjudication for ESD claim - normal?

So confused about my unemployment claim right now! I called ESD today and found out that one of my "adjudication in progress" issues was cleared - it was just my identity verification. When I asked the agent what the other pending adjudication issues were, they just said my claim was "being reviewed." It's been 5 WEEKS now! My employer definitely got notification that I filed (they told me they got it right at the beginning). But here's what's weird - I haven't received ANYTHING from ESD saying whether my employer responded or disputed my claim. Does the lack of communication mean everything is fine with my employer's response? Or should I be worried? Is 5 weeks normal for adjudication in 2025? How much longer should I expect to wait before I get a decision? Getting desperate here...

I wouldn't assume everything's okay just because you haven't heard anything. My claim was in adjudication for 7 weeks before I found out my employer had contested it! The ESD rep I finally reached told me they're dealing with a huge backlog of claims this year. Have you been able to submit your weekly claims while waiting? Make sure you keep doing that even during adjudication.

Oh no, that's what I'm worried about! Yes, I've been filing my weekly claims religiously. Do you know if there's any way to find out if my employer disputed it? The ESD website doesn't show anything about this!

Unfortunately, 5 weeks in adjudication is pretty normal these days with ESD, especially if there are multiple issues needing review. The fact that your ID verification was cleared is actually a good sign - that's often the first step. The remaining adjudication could be related to your separation reason, able and available status, or something else. ESD won't necessarily tell you if your employer responded unless there's a discrepancy they need to investigate further. If your employer disputed something, you would typically receive a fact-finding questionnaire or interview request. Keep filing your weekly claims and make sure you're completing your three job search activities each week while you wait. If you want to check on your claim status, you might need to speak with an adjudicator directly.

Thank you for explaining that! I haven't received any questionnaires or interview requests, so maybe that's a good sign? I'm definitely keeping up with my 3 job search activities every week. I'm just getting worried about bills piling up with no income coming in yet.

I had the EXACT same issue back in January!!! My identity got cleared quick but then I was stuck in adjudication forever. It turned out my previous job had reported a different reason for separation than what I put on my application. I didn't find this out until week 6 when I finally got through to someone at ESD. The whole system is SO frustrating!!!! Did they tell you ANYTHING else about why your claim is being reviewed?

No, they just said it was "being reviewed" and didn't give me any details! Did you have to do anything special to resolve your situation? I'm starting to worry maybe I put something wrong on my application without realizing it.

I wouldnt worry to much, my claim took 8 weeks in adjutication before it cleared this year. as long as your still filing weekly claims youll get backpay for all those weeks once it's approved. the fact they cleared your ID is good news.

Thanks for the reassurance. 8 weeks seems like forever though! Did you do anything to speed up your claim or just wait it out?

Adjudication is seriously taking FOREVER right now. I think they're understaffed or something. I'm in week 9 of waiting!!! So frustrating. The backpay will be nice but doesn't help with bills NOW.

You're right about the staffing issues. ESD lost a lot of employees after the pandemic surge and they're still trying to rebuild. For claims in extended adjudication (over 3 weeks), I recommend calling and specifically asking to speak with an adjudicator about your claim status. The regular agents can only see basic information, but adjudicators can actually move your claim forward.

If you want to get more information or potentially speed up your claim, you need to speak with an adjudicator. The biggest challenge is actually reaching someone who can help. Regular ESD agents can only see basic status information, but adjudicators have the authority to review and make decisions on claims. The problem is that getting through to ESD by phone is incredibly difficult with the current call volumes. Make sure when you call that you specifically ask to speak with an adjudicator about your claim that's been in adjudication for 5+ weeks. If they say they can't transfer you, call back and try again with a different agent.

Getting through to ESD is literally the worst part of dealing with unemployment. After trying for weeks to reach someone, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and actually got through to an ESD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The service basically navigates the phone system and waits on hold for you, then calls you when an actual human picks up. Saved me hours of frustration, and I finally got transferred to an adjudicator who could see exactly what was holding up my claim.

Has anything shown up in your ESD portal about fact-finding appointments or questionnaires? Sometimes they'll send those without notifying you by email or text, and if you miss responding to them, it can really delay your claim.

I've been checking my ESD portal every day and haven't seen anything about fact-finding or questionnaires. It literally just shows "adjudication in progress" with no details. Should I be looking somewhere specific in the portal?

To directly answer your question: No, the lack of communication doesn't necessarily mean everything is okay, but it also doesn't mean there's a problem. Here's what's likely happening: 1. Your ID verification is cleared, which is excellent progress 2. The remaining adjudication could be related to separation reason, wage verification, or job search compliance 3. The 5-week timeframe is unfortunately within normal ranges for 2025 (average is 4-7 weeks) What you should do now: 1. Continue filing weekly claims and documenting your three job search activities 2. Check your ESD portal daily for any notices or questionnaires 3. Try reaching an adjudicator (not just a regular agent) by phone 4. Verify your contact information is correct in the system If you reach week 7 without resolution, that's when I'd recommend escalating by contacting your state representative's office for assistance with your claim. They can often help move things along.

Thank you for the clear explanation and timeline! I'll keep filing and documenting everything properly. I didn't know I could contact my state representative if it goes on too long - that's really helpful advice.

do u know what type of adjudication issues are on ur claim? like quit vs fired vs laid off? sometimes different issues take different amounts of time. mine was a quit issue and took 11 weeks! its ridiculous but just keep filing

I was laid off due to budget cuts, so I thought it would be straightforward. The ESD person I talked to wouldn't tell me what specific issues they're reviewing. Maybe that's why it's taking so long? 11 weeks is insane!

Another thing to consider - make sure your former employer is actually responding to ESD. Sometimes they don't respond at all, which can actually delay things even more because ESD has to make multiple attempts to contact them before moving forward. Have you tried contacting your former employer's HR department to confirm they've responded to ESD's requests?

0 coins

That's a good idea. I haven't reached out to my former employer about this. I'll contact HR tomorrow and see if they've responded to ESD. I was assuming no news was good news, but maybe they're just ignoring the requests!
