How to get proof of income from Washington ESD unemployment benefits?

I need to get official documentation showing my unemployment income from last year for a loan application. The bank is asking for proof of all income sources including my UI benefits. I can see my payment history on my Washington ESD account but I'm not sure if that's sufficient or if I need something more official. Has anyone dealt with this before? What kind of documentation did you provide?

You'll need to get your 1099-G form from Washington ESD. That's the official tax document that shows all unemployment benefits paid to you during the tax year. You can download it from your SecureAccess Washington account under the tax documents section.

Perfect! I found it under the tax forms section. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

wait where exactly is that? I've been looking all over my account and can't find any tax documents section

If you can't find your 1099-G online, you can also call Washington ESD and request they mail you a copy. But honestly, good luck getting through on the phone - I've been trying for weeks about a different issue.

I had the same problem with calling Washington ESD. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Actually found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

0 coins

How does that work exactly? Do they actually connect you to Washington ESD or is it something else?

0 coins

They help you get through the phone system to reach an actual Washington ESD representative. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

Make sure you check if the 1099-G includes ALL your unemployment payments. Sometimes there are delays in reporting and not everything shows up on the first version they issue.

0 coins

Good point. How would I know if something's missing? Should I compare it to my payment history?

0 coins

Yes, cross-reference with your payment history in your Washington ESD account. Add up all the weekly payments and make sure they match the 1099-G total.

banks are so annoying about this stuff!! like why do they need to know about unemployment income anyway

CosmicCaptain

•

They need to verify all income sources to assess your ability to repay the loan. Unemployment benefits count as income for lending purposes.

I guess that makes sense but it's still a pain to gather all this paperwork

Quick update - I was able to download my 1099-G from the Washington ESD website. It was under the 'Correspondence and Forms' section, not where I was initially looking. The document shows all my UI benefits for 2024.

0 coins

Thanks for the update! I'll check that section. I was looking under 'Payment History' which only shows the weekly breakdown.

Did your bank accept just the 1099-G or did they want additional documentation?

0 coins

They accepted the 1099-G along with my other tax documents. Seemed to be exactly what they were looking for.

Pro tip: If you're applying for a mortgage, some lenders might also want to see your award letter or determination notice to understand the duration of your unemployment benefits. Not all lenders require this but it's good to have on hand.

0 coins

That's helpful to know. Where would I find the award letter in my Washington ESD account?

Ava Martinez

It should be in the same correspondence section where you found the 1099-G. It's usually called 'Monetary Determination' or something similar.

I had to get proof of unemployment income for an apartment application last year. The property manager accepted a printout of my payment history from the Washington ESD website. Didn't need the 1099-G for that situation.

0 coins

That's interesting. I guess it depends on what you're applying for and how formal they want the documentation to be.

Miguel Castro

•

Exactly. For the apartment they just wanted to see consistent income over the previous few months. A bank loan is probably more strict.

Be careful about the timing too. 1099-G forms usually aren't available until late January for the previous tax year. If you need proof of current year income, you might need to use your payment history or weekly claim summaries instead.

0 coins

Good point about timing. Luckily I needed 2024 information and it's available now.

What if you need proof of income for ongoing UI benefits? Like if you're still receiving unemployment?

For ongoing benefits, I'd use the payment history screen or maybe ask Washington ESD for a benefit verification letter. Though getting them on the phone is the hard part.

Washington ESD system is so confusing to navigate sometimes. I spent 30 minutes looking for my 1099-G before I found it. They should make these documents easier to locate.

0 coins

Agreed! The website layout isn't very intuitive. I always have to click around randomly until I find what I'm looking for.

0 coins

This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr when I needed help. Sometimes it's easier to just talk to a real person instead of trying to figure out their website.

Make sure to save multiple copies of your 1099-G once you download it. I lost mine and had to go through the whole process again when I needed it for my taxes.

0 coins

Great advice! I saved it to my computer and also printed a hard copy just in case.

I always save important documents like this in multiple places - computer, cloud storage, and print a copy.

Does the 1099-G show federal taxes withheld from unemployment benefits? I had taxes taken out of my UI payments and want to make sure that's reflected.

CosmicCaptain

•

Yes, it should show both the total benefits paid and any federal taxes withheld in separate boxes. Box 1 is total unemployment compensation, Box 4 is federal income tax withheld.

•

Perfect, that's exactly what I needed to know for my tax prep. Thanks!

Just a heads up - if you received unemployment from multiple states, you'll need to get 1099-G forms from each state's unemployment agency. Washington ESD only shows benefits paid by Washington state.

0 coins

Fortunately I only received benefits from Washington, but that's good to know for others who might have moved between states.

I had this situation when I moved from Oregon to Washington mid-year. Had to get documents from both states.

Thanks for posting this question! I've been wondering about the same thing for my mortgage application. Sounds like the 1099-G is definitely the way to go for official proof of unemployment income.

0 coins

Happy to help! The 1099-G worked perfectly for my loan application. Good luck with your mortgage!

Same here, I need this for refinancing. At least now I know exactly what to look for on the Washington ESD website.

One more thing to consider - if you're self-employed or have other income sources, make sure your lender understands that the unemployment was temporary. Some lenders get nervous about unemployment income even if it's legitimate.

0 coins

That's a good point. I made sure to explain my employment situation clearly in my loan application.

0 coins

If you need to discuss your specific situation with Washington ESD, definitely consider using Claimyr to get through to them. Much easier than trying to call on your own.

0 coins

Final tip: keep all your unemployment documentation organized in one folder. You never know when you might need it again for future applications or tax purposes.

0 coins

Excellent advice! I'm creating a dedicated folder for all my unemployment documents now.
