How to file for unemployment travel nurse assignments in Washington ESD
I'm a travel nurse who just finished a 13-week assignment at a hospital in Spokane and I'm not sure how to properly file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD. My recruiter says there's a gap before my next assignment starts and I should be eligible for benefits during the downtime. I've never filed for unemployment as a travel nurse before - do I file in Washington since that's where I just worked, or in my home state? Also, how do I handle the job search requirements when my work is so specialized and location-dependent? Any other travel healthcare workers dealt with this?

You file in the state where you earned your wages, so since you worked in Washington, you'll file with Washington ESD. The job search requirements can be tricky for travel nurses though - you'll need to document your search efforts but they should understand your field is specialized.

•Thanks! Do I need to register with WorkSourceWA even though I work with travel agencies?

•Yes, you still need to register with WorkSourceWA and complete the job search activities. You can document your contacts with travel agencies and applications through nursing job boards.

I'm also a travel nurse and went through this last year. Washington ESD approved my claim but the adjudication took forever because they had to verify my wages from multiple hospitals. Make sure you have all your pay stubs ready.

•How long did the adjudication process take for you? I'm worried about the gap between assignments.

•It took about 5 weeks total. I couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check on the status. Finally used a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Wait, can travel nurses even get unemployment? I thought you had to be available for work in the local area.

•Travel nurses can get unemployment between assignments as long as they're actively seeking work. The key is documenting your job search efforts appropriately for your field.

•Yeah, you just have to show you're looking for work within your profession. Travel nursing agencies count as valid job contacts.

This is so confusing! I'm a travel PT and I have the same question. Do we put our home address or the address where we worked for the claim?

Carmen Vega
•Use your current address where you can receive mail. If you're between housing, use a reliable address where Washington ESD can reach you.

Jamal Harris
•Ok that makes sense. I'm staying with family between assignments so I'll use their address.

The job search requirements for travel healthcare workers are specific. You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week, but these can include: contacting travel agencies, applying to direct hospital positions, networking with other travel professionals, or applying through healthcare job boards. Document everything in your job search log.

•That's really helpful! Can I count reaching out to multiple agencies in one day as separate contacts?

Mei Chen
•Yes, each agency contact counts separately. Just make sure you're documenting the specific agency name, contact method, and date for each one.

•I'm dreading this part. The website looks really complicated.

•It's not too bad once you get started. Just have all your employment history ready - dates, addresses, wages, reason for leaving each assignment.

I had issues with Washington ESD not understanding my employment pattern as a travel nurse. They kept questioning why I left each job after 13 weeks. Had to explain multiple times that's just how travel nursing works.

•Did they eventually approve your claim? I'm worried they'll think I quit voluntarily.

Amara Okafor
•Yes, it got approved after adjudication. Make sure you clearly state that each assignment was a temporary contract that ended as scheduled, not a quit or termination.

Pro tip: When you file your weekly claims, make sure you report any income from orientation days or per diem work accurately. Washington ESD is strict about unreported income.

•What if I do some PRN shifts while waiting for my next assignment?

Carmen Vega
•Report all PRN income on your weekly claim. You can still receive partial benefits if your weekly earnings are below a certain threshold.

Does anyone know if we can collect unemployment while doing the paperwork and credentialing for the next assignment? Sometimes that process takes weeks.
0 coins
Mei Chen
•Yes, you can collect benefits while doing credentialing as long as you're able and available for work. The credentialing process doesn't count as refusing suitable work.

Zoe Stavros
•Good to know! The credentialing for my next assignment is taking forever.

I tried calling Washington ESD to ask about this exact situation and got hung up on after 2 hours on hold. SO FRUSTRATING!!!

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. For like $20 they got me through to someone at Washington ESD in minutes instead of hours. Check out claimyr.com - totally worth it when you need actual answers.

•I'll look into that. I can't keep taking whole days off just to sit on hold.

Make sure you understand the difference between being 'able and available' vs 'actively seeking work.' As a travel nurse, you need to show you're both physically able to work and actively looking for assignments.

Yuki Kobayashi
•What's the difference exactly? I thought they were the same thing.

Giovanni Colombo
•Able and available means you're physically/mentally capable of working and not restricted by other commitments. Actively seeking work means you're actually applying for jobs and making contacts.

Just completed my Washington ESD claim as a travel respiratory therapist. The key is being very clear about your employment pattern - I wrote a brief explanation about how travel healthcare contracts work when I filed.
0 coins
Yuki Kobayashi
•That's smart! Did you include that in the initial application or wait until they asked?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Qasimi
•I included it in the initial application in the comments section. Better to over-explain than have them confused during adjudication.

anyone else have trouble with the SecureAccess Washington login? keeps saying my account is locked

•Clear your browser cache and cookies, then try again. If that doesn't work, you might need to create a new SAW account.

The wage verification part was tricky for me because I worked in multiple states before my Washington assignment. Washington ESD had to contact those other states to verify my wages. Added weeks to the process.

Yuki Kobayashi
•How do they verify wages from other states? Do I need to provide anything extra?

Sofia Ramirez
•They do it automatically through their system, but having your pay stubs ready can speed things up if there are any discrepancies.

Question about the waiting week - do travel nurses have to serve a waiting week in Washington?
0 coins
Mei Chen
•Washington doesn't have a waiting week requirement anymore. You can potentially receive benefits for the first week you file if eligible.

Dmitry Volkov
•Oh that's good news! I was worried about having no income for that first week.

Make sure you keep detailed records of all your job search activities. I got audited by Washington ESD and had to provide proof of every contact I made. Thankfully I kept good records.

Yuki Kobayashi
•What kind of proof did they want? Screenshots of applications?

StarSeeker
•They wanted contact names, dates, method of contact, and follow-up actions. I used the WorkSourceWA job search log to track everything.

Does anyone know if travel stipends count as wages for unemployment purposes?
0 coins
Mei Chen
•Generally, housing and meal stipends don't count as wages for unemployment calculations. Only your taxable hourly wages count toward your benefit amount.
0 coins
Ava Martinez
•That makes sense. I was wondering why my benefit amount seemed lower than expected.

I'm between travel assignments right now and my claim is still in adjudication after 3 weeks. Getting really worried about paying my bills.

•Adjudication can take forever, especially for travel workers. I used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD when mine was stuck. Worth every penny to get answers about what's holding up your claim.

Just a heads up - if you're considering taking an assignment in another state while your Washington claim is active, you need to report that to Washington ESD. Can't collect benefits while working full-time elsewhere.

Yuki Kobayashi
•What if I take a short-term assignment? Like a 1-2 week fill-in?
0 coins
Zainab Omar
•You'd need to report that income and probably wouldn't be eligible for benefits those weeks. But you can resume your claim after the assignment ends.

Final update - my Washington ESD claim was approved! Took 4 weeks total but I'm finally getting benefits. The key was having all my documentation ready and being clear about the nature of travel nursing work.

•Don't give up! The process is slow but they do understand travel healthcare work once they review everything properly.
