Can you collect Washington ESD unemployment if you worked in another state recently?
I'm really confused about filing for unemployment in Washington. I worked in Oregon for about 8 months last year before moving back to Washington in November. Now I got laid off from my Washington job in January and need to file for unemployment. Do I file with Washington ESD since I live here now, or do I need to file with Oregon since that's where most of my recent wages came from? I've been going back and forth on the Washington ESD website but can't find clear information about this situation. Has anyone dealt with filing across state lines before?

You typically file in the state where you currently live and are seeking work, which would be Washington in your case. However, since you earned wages in Oregon recently, Washington ESD will need to request your wage information from Oregon during the claim process. This is called an interstate claim.

•Oh that makes sense! So I do file with Washington ESD even though my Oregon wages were higher? Will that affect my benefit amount?

Nia Harris
•Yes, Washington ESD will calculate your benefits based on wages from both states during your base period. The benefit amount depends on your total qualifying wages, not which state they came from.

I had a similar situation last year when I moved from California. Filed with Washington ESD and they handled everything automatically once I provided my previous work history. Just make sure you have all your wage information ready when you file.

•Did it take longer to process because of the out-of-state wages? I'm worried about delays.

•It took about 2 extra weeks for them to get my California wage records, but after that it processed normally. Just be patient with the interstate requests.

Actually, I ran into issues trying to reach Washington ESD about this exact question. Spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an actual agent who explained the interstate process clearly. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Super helpful for getting answers about complex situations like yours.

•Never heard of Claimyr before. Is it legit? I've been struggling to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my interstate claim.

•Yeah it's legitimate. They basically help you get through to Washington ESD agents when the phone lines are jammed. Saved me so much frustration trying to understand the interstate filing rules.

•That sounds really helpful actually. I've tried calling Washington ESD three times this week and can never get through.

Make sure you file in Washington since that's where you're currently residing and job searching. Washington ESD has agreements with other states to share wage information for interstate claims. Don't try to file in multiple states - that can create huge problems.

•What kind of problems? I was thinking about filing in both states to see which gives me more money.

•Don't do that! Filing in multiple states is considered fraud. You can only have one active unemployment claim at a time. Washington ESD will access your Oregon wages automatically through the interstate system.

•Oh wow, good to know. Thanks for the warning!

ugh the whole interstate thing is such a pain. took forever for them to get my records from nevada when i moved here. just file with washington esd and wait it out

GalacticGuardian
•How long did you have to wait? I really need these benefits to start soon.

•like 3-4 weeks total but most of that was waiting for nevada to respond with my wage info. once washington esd had everything it went fast

Here's what happens with interstate claims: Washington ESD files a request with Oregon's unemployment office for your wage records. Oregon has 10 business days to respond. Once Washington ESD receives your complete wage history, they can calculate your weekly benefit amount and back-date payments to when you first filed.

•Do you still have to do the weekly claims while waiting for the interstate stuff to process?
0 coins
Nia Harris
•Yes, you must continue filing your weekly claims even while the interstate wage request is pending. Don't skip any weeks or you could lose benefits for those periods.

GalacticGuardian
•Good to know! I was wondering about that part. So I file my initial claim with Washington ESD now and just keep doing weekly claims while they sort out the Oregon wages?
0 coins
Nia Harris
•Exactly. File your initial claim immediately and then file weekly claims every week without skipping. The interstate wage verification happens in the background.

I remember when I moved from Arizona, Washington ESD told me that the benefit amount is based on your highest quarter of earnings during the base period, regardless of which state those wages came from. So if your Oregon wages were higher, that actually helps your Washington benefit calculation.

•That's reassuring! My Oregon job definitely paid more than my recent Washington job.

•Wait, I thought Washington used all four quarters of the base period, not just the highest quarter?

•You're right, they use all qualifying wages from the base period. I meant that having higher wages from Oregon will increase your overall benefit calculation since it's part of your total qualifying wages.

Just went through this exact situation! Moved from Texas to Washington and got laid off. Filed with Washington ESD and they handled everything. The interstate wage request took about 2 weeks but then I got back-pay for the waiting period. Make sure you have your previous employer information ready when you file.

•What employer information do they need exactly? I have my Oregon W-2 but is there other stuff?

Mei Chen
•They'll need employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. The more detail you can provide upfront, the smoother the interstate process goes.

Been trying to get clarification on interstate claims from Washington ESD for weeks. Phone lines are always busy and the online chat never works. Finally tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and actually got through to an agent who walked me through the whole process. Worth it just to get real answers instead of guessing.

•How much does Claimyr cost? I'm desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD about my interstate claim issues.

•I didn't want to keep spending money on failed call attempts, so it was worth it for me. Check out their demo video to see how it works - claimyr.com has all the info.

Important note about interstate claims - make sure you're eligible to work in Washington. If you moved here recently, Washington ESD may ask for proof of your intent to work in this state rather than returning to Oregon. Keep documentation showing you've established residence here.

•What kind of documentation? I have a Washington lease and changed my driver's license already.

Liam O'Connor
•That's perfect. Lease, driver's license, voter registration, utility bills - anything showing you've established Washington residency and aren't just temporarily here.

The whole interstate thing used to be a nightmare but they've streamlined it a lot. Washington ESD has data sharing agreements with most states now so the wage requests go through much faster than they used to.

•That's good news! I was worried it would take months to get my out-of-state wages processed.

•Nah, usually 2-3 weeks max unless there's some unusual complication with your previous employer or the other state's system is having issues.

Pro tip: when you file your Washington ESD claim, be very specific about your work history and make sure all the dates are accurate. Any discrepancies can delay the interstate wage request process while they verify information.

•Should I gather my old pay stubs from Oregon before filing? I still have some of them.
0 coins
Fatima Al-Mazrouei
•Having pay stubs is helpful but not required for filing. Washington ESD will get official wage records directly from Oregon. But keep your pay stubs in case there are any discrepancies that need to be resolved.

whatever you do dont file with oregon instead of washington thinking you'll get more money. my cousin tried that and it created a huge mess since he wasnt living in oregon anymore. took months to sort out

•Yikes, that sounds like a nightmare. Definitely filing with Washington ESD since I live here now.

•Yeah I've heard stories about people trying to game the system by filing in the wrong state. Always causes more problems than it solves.

For anyone else reading this with interstate questions - I finally got through to Washington ESD using Claimyr after weeks of busy signals. The agent explained that Washington actually has one of the better interstate claim processing systems compared to other states. Most requests get handled within 2-3 weeks now.

GalacticGuardian
•That's reassuring! I was worried Washington would be slower than other states I've heard about.

•The agent said Washington ESD invested heavily in upgrading their interstate data systems after COVID showed how important cross-state coordination is. Much better now than it was a few years ago.

Just want to add that you should file your Washington ESD claim as soon as possible. Even if the interstate wage verification takes a couple weeks, your benefit year starts from when you first file, not when they finish processing everything.
0 coins
GalacticGuardian
•So I should file right away even though I don't have all my Oregon employment details organized yet?
0 coins
Dmitry Popov
•Yes, file immediately with whatever information you have. You can always provide additional details later, but you can't backdate your claim filing date. Time is important with unemployment claims.

•This is really important advice. I waited two weeks to file my interstate claim thinking I needed everything perfect and lost out on those two weeks of benefits.
