Can I file Washington ESD unemployment if I moved here from another state?

I just relocated to Washington from out of state about 6 weeks ago for a job opportunity that fell through at the last minute. My previous employment was in another state where I worked for 2 years before moving here. Can I still file for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD even though my work history is from elsewhere? I'm really confused about how this works when you move between states. I tried calling Washington ESD but keep getting busy signals. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

You'll likely need to file an interstate claim. Washington ESD can process claims for wages earned in other states, but there's specific paperwork involved. You should be able to start the process online through SecureAccess Washington.

Thanks! Do you know if I need any special documentation from my previous employer in the other state?

You'll need your wage and separation information, but Washington ESD can request wage records from other states electronically in most cases.

How long did it take for your claim to get processed? I'm worried about the timeline.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a system that calls repeatedly until they connect you with someone. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of redial frustration.

Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true tbh

I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to a Washington ESD rep in about 45 minutes instead of spending all day redialing.

I might try this - I've been calling for days with no luck getting through to anyone at Washington ESD.

The interstate claim process is pretty straightforward once you get started. Washington ESD will coordinate with your previous state to get your wage information. Just make sure you file in Washington since that's where you're currently residing and looking for work.

That's a relief! I was worried I'd have to file in my previous state somehow.

Nope, you file where you live now. The states handle the wage transfer behind the scenes.

This is exactly why the unemployment system is so broken! Moving between states shouldn't be this complicated. You work, you pay into the system, you should get benefits no matter where you are.

It's actually not that bad once you understand the process. The interstate system works pretty well most of the time.

Tell that to people who wait months for their claims to process because of interstate delays!

Wait, I'm confused. If you just moved here 6 weeks ago, do you meet Washington's residency requirements for unemployment? I thought there was some kind of waiting period?

0 coins

There's no residency requirement for filing unemployment in Washington. You just need to be physically present and available for work here.

Oh okay, I must have been thinking of something else. Thanks for clarifying!

UPDATE: I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and actually got through to Washington ESD! The rep confirmed I can file an interstate claim and helped me understand what documents I need. Definitely worth it if you're struggling to get through on the phone.

Glad it worked for you too! Makes such a difference when you can actually talk to someone who knows what they're doing.

wish i had known about this when i was dealing with my interstate claim nightmare

For anyone else in this situation, make sure you have your Social Security card and ID ready when you apply. The interstate wage request can take 1-2 weeks, so file as soon as possible to minimize delays in your benefit payments.

Good tip! I have all my documents ready to go now.

Also helpful to have your previous employer's information handy - business name, address, dates of employment, reason for separation.

I still can't believe how hard it is to get through to Washington ESD on the phone. Shouldn't basic customer service be easier than this?

RIGHT?! It's ridiculous that we need third-party services just to talk to our own state agency.

I mean, at least there are solutions now. Better than just giving up after hours of busy signals.

One thing to keep in mind - your benefit amount will be based on wages from your previous state, not Washington wages. So don't be surprised if the calculation looks different than what you might expect based on Washington's wage requirements.

That makes sense. My wages in my previous state were actually higher than what I was expecting to make here anyway.

Yes, and you'll follow Washington's job search requirements and weekly claim procedures, even though the wages are from elsewhere.

just wanted to add that when i did my interstate claim i had to wait longer for the first payment but once everything was set up the weekly claims were processed normally

How much longer was the wait? I'm trying to budget for this.

i think it was like 5-6 weeks total from filing to first payment but that included the normal waiting week

This thread has been super helpful! I'm in a similar situation and didn't know interstate claims were even possible. Definitely going to look into this.

Glad you found it useful! Don't hesitate to ask if you run into any issues with the process.

For what it's worth, that Claimyr service also helped me later when I had questions about my job search log requirements. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human instead of trying to figure everything out from the website.

Okay you've convinced me to try it. The Washington ESD website is so confusing for some of this stuff.

Agreed! Having someone explain the interstate process over the phone made it so much clearer than reading about it online.

Still think it's crazy that we have to jump through all these hoops just to get benefits we've earned. The system should be simpler, especially for people already dealing with job loss stress.

I understand the frustration, but the interstate system actually works pretty well considering how complex it could be. Multiple states coordinating benefits is inherently complicated.

Sadie Benitez

Maybe, but other government services manage to work across state lines without this much hassle.

Final update: I filed my interstate claim yesterday and it went through! Now I just need to wait for the wage verification. Thanks everyone for the help and advice. This forum saved me a lot of confusion and stress.

Excellent! Remember to keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the wage verification to avoid any gaps.
