How to file a weekly unemployment claim through Washington ESD system?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits after waiting 3 weeks for adjudication to finish. Now I need to file my weekly claims but I'm honestly confused about the whole process. When I log into my SecureAccess Washington account, I see the weekly claim section but I'm not sure what information I need to have ready or how often I'm supposed to do this. Do I file every Sunday? What happens if I miss a week? Also, what exactly do they mean by 'job search activities' - do I need to keep track of every application I submit?

You need to file your weekly claim every week to keep receiving benefits. The system opens Sunday morning and you have until the following Saturday to file. Make sure you have your work hours (if any) and job search activities ready before you start.

•Thanks! So I can file anytime between Sunday and Saturday? I was worried I had to do it exactly on Sunday.

Raj Gupta
•Exactly! Just don't wait until the last minute on Saturday in case there are technical issues with the website.

I've been filing for 2 months now and here's what you need to know: report ANY work you did that week (even 1 hour), log at least 3 job search activities per week, and answer all the questions honestly. The job search can include applications, networking, interviews, job fairs, etc.

•What counts as a job search activity? I've been applying online but also updating my LinkedIn - does that count?

Lena Müller
•Yes, updating your LinkedIn profile counts as a job search activity. So does attending workshops, reaching out to contacts, or researching companies.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your weekly claims, I discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a live agent. I was stuck trying to call for weeks about a weekly claim issue and they got me through in about 30 minutes. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•Is this legit? I'm so desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD about my weekly claims that got messed up.

•Yeah it's real, I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Way better than trying to call at 8am and getting busy signals for hours.

IMPORTANT: If you miss filing a weekly claim, you can still file it later but you might have to provide additional documentation about why you missed it. Washington ESD will ask for a good reason.

•What happens if I just forgot to file one week? Will they deny my whole claim?
0 coins
Paolo Bianchi
•No, they won't deny your whole claim, but you won't get paid for that week unless you can show good cause for missing it. Just file the next week and explain what happened.

The weekly claim questions are pretty straightforward - did you work, did you look for work, were you able and available for work, did you refuse any job offers. Just answer them honestly and you'll be fine.

•What does 'able and available' actually mean? I had a doctor's appointment one day - does that make me unavailable?
0 coins
Yara Assad
•A doctor's appointment for a few hours doesn't make you unavailable for the whole week. You're still able and available for work in general.

make sure you keep records of everything!! I got audited by Washington ESD and had to prove all my job search activities. Keep screenshots of applications, emails, everything.

Ava Williams
•How do they audit you? Do they just randomly pick people?
0 coins
Olivia Clark
•I think it's random but they asked for 3 months of job search records. Had to provide proof of every single activity I claimed.

One thing to watch out for - if you work any hours during the week, even part-time, you have to report it. They'll reduce your benefit amount but you might still get something. Don't try to hide work income.

Ava Williams
•How do they calculate the reduction? Is it dollar for dollar?
0 coins
Raj Gupta
•No, they have a formula. Generally you can earn up to about $300 before it starts reducing your benefits significantly, but it depends on your benefit amount.

I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about a problem with my weekly claims. The phone lines are always busy and they never respond to messages through the website. So frustrating!

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - same situation, couldn't get through for weeks. They made it so much easier.

•I might have to try that. I'm losing money every week this doesn't get resolved.

Pro tip: file your weekly claim on Sunday or Monday morning if possible. Sometimes the system gets slow later in the week when everyone's rushing to file before the deadline.

Ava Williams
•Good to know! I was planning to just file whenever I remembered during the week.

Lena Müller
•Yeah, I learned that the hard way when the system was down on a Friday and I almost missed the deadline.

Does anyone know if volunteer work counts as a job search activity? I've been volunteering at a nonprofit to keep my skills sharp while looking for work.

Yara Assad
•Volunteer work can count as a job search activity if it's helping you develop skills or network in your field. Just make sure you're still doing other job search activities too.

Javier Morales
•Thanks! I've been counting it as one of my three weekly activities along with applications and networking.

Remember that Washington ESD requires you to be actively looking for work in your usual occupation or any other suitable work. The job search requirement is serious - they will check if you're really looking.

Ava Williams
•How do I know what Washington ESD considers 'suitable work' for me? Can I turn down jobs that pay way less than my previous job?
0 coins
Paolo Bianchi
•Generally, after a few weeks you have to consider jobs that pay at least 70% of your previous wage. But there are exceptions for specialized skills or if the job is too far away.

The Washington ESD website has a job search log you can download to keep track of your activities. It's not required but it makes filing your weekly claims much easier.

Ava Williams
•Is this the same as the WorkSourceWA requirement? I'm confused about what's required vs. what's recommended.
0 coins
Natasha Petrov
•The job search log is just for your own records. WorkSourceWA registration is a separate requirement for most people on unemployment.

DO NOT LIE on your weekly claims!! I know someone who got caught claiming they looked for work when they didn't and they had to pay back months of benefits plus penalties.
0 coins
Ava Williams
•How did they get caught? Do they really check everyone's job search activities?
0 coins
Olivia Clark
•They do random audits and employer verification. They called the companies my friend claimed to have applied to and found out he was lying.

Another thing about Claimyr - they're especially helpful if you're having technical issues with the weekly claim system. I had a problem where my claim kept erroring out and they helped me reach someone who could fix it on the backend.

Connor O'Brien
•That's good to know. I've had the website freeze up on me a few times while trying to file.
0 coins
TechNinja
•Yeah, the technical issues are really common. At least with Claimyr you can get through to someone who can actually help instead of being stuck with error messages.

Quick question - if I'm on standby with my employer, do I still need to do job search activities for my weekly claims?
0 coins
Yara Assad
•If you're on official standby status, you don't need to do job search activities. But make sure Washington ESD has properly coded your claim as standby, not regular UI.

Amina Diallo
•Thanks! I need to double-check my claim status then because I've been doing job searches just in case.

For anyone new to this, the weekly claim basically asks: Did you work? How many hours? How much did you earn? Did you look for work? Were you able and available for work? Did you refuse any job offers? That's pretty much it.
0 coins
Ava Williams
•That sounds much simpler than I was expecting. I was worried it would be complicated like the initial application.
0 coins
Lena Müller
•The weekly claims are definitely easier than the initial application. Just be honest and consistent with your answers.

I messed up my first few weekly claims because I didn't understand the questions properly. Don't be afraid to call Washington ESD if you're confused about anything.

•Good luck getting through to them on the phone! I've been trying for weeks.

GamerGirl99
•Yeah, the phone situation is terrible. That's why services like Claimyr exist - because Washington ESD is so hard to reach directly.

One last tip: if you're doing gig work or freelance work while on unemployment, make sure you report it correctly on your weekly claims. Even small amounts of income need to be reported.
0 coins
Ava Williams
•What if I do a small freelance project that doesn't pay until the next month? Do I report it when I do the work or when I get paid?
0 coins
Hiroshi Nakamura
•Report it for the week you did the work, not when you got paid. Washington ESD wants to know about work performed during each week.

The weekly claim process becomes routine after a few weeks. Just set a reminder to file every Sunday and keep track of your job search activities throughout the week.

•Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful. I feel much more confident about filing my first weekly claim now.

•You're welcome! The Washington ESD system can be confusing at first but you'll get the hang of it. Good luck with your job search!

Don't forget to check your claim status regularly too. Sometimes Washington ESD will put a hold on your claim for various reasons and you need to resolve it quickly to avoid missing payments.
0 coins
Ava Williams
•How often should I check? And what kind of holds are common?
0 coins
Malik Jenkins
•I check mine every few days. Common holds include identity verification, work search issues, or if they need additional information about your separation from your last job.
