How soon can you file for unemployment after being laid off - Washington ESD timing?
Just got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job and wondering when I can actually file my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. My supervisor said I should wait a week but I've heard different things from coworkers. Some say file immediately, others say wait until your last paycheck clears. What's the actual rule here? I'm stressing because I need to get benefits started ASAP to cover rent next month.

You can file your initial claim immediately after your last day of work with Washington ESD. Don't wait! The sooner you file, the sooner your benefit year starts. Your weekly claims will begin the week after you file your initial application.

•Thanks! So I can literally file today even though I just got laid off yesterday?

•Yes, absolutely. Washington ESD recommends filing as soon as possible after job loss.

definitely file right away but good luck actually getting through to someone at Washington ESD if you have questions... their phone system is a nightmare

•This is so true. I spent weeks trying to reach them when I had an issue with my claim.

•Actually, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

File immediately but be prepared for potential delays. Washington ESD has been overwhelmed and many claims go into adjudication for identity verification or other issues. Make sure you have all your employment information ready when you file online.

•What kind of employment info do they need exactly?

•Your employer's name, address, dates of employment, reason for separation, and last day worked. Also have your social security card and ID ready.

Wait I thought you had to wait until after your last paycheck? That's what HR told me when I got laid off last year

•No, that's a common misconception. You file based on your last day of work, not when you receive your final pay.

•Wow, wish I'd known that. I waited two weeks and probably lost benefits.

JUST DO IT NOW!! I made the mistake of waiting thinking I needed to organize paperwork first and it delayed everything by weeks. Washington ESD doesn't care if you're ready or not - the clock starts ticking from when you file.

•Okay you convinced me, filing right now!

•Same thing happened to me. Every day you wait is potentially money lost.

Also remember you can't collect benefits for the first week - that's your waiting week. So even if you file today, your first payable week won't be until next week.

•Wait what? There's a waiting week? Nobody told me that!

Evelyn Kelly
•Yes, Washington state has a one-week waiting period. You file weekly claims but the first week is unpaid.

been there done that - file immediately but don't expect quick processing. Mine took 3 weeks to get approved and I had to call multiple times

•3 weeks?! I can't wait that long for money

•This is exactly why services like Claimyr are helpful. When my claim got stuck in adjudication, they helped me reach an actual person who could explain what was holding it up.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. You'll need to log job searches every week you claim benefits.

Kiara Greene
•How many job searches per week?

Noland Curtis
•Three job search activities per week, and you have to keep detailed records in case Washington ESD audits you.

Does it matter if you got severance pay? I'm getting laid off next month and they're giving me 2 weeks severance
0 coins
Jenna Sloan
•Severance might affect when your benefits start. Washington ESD considers it wages for the period it covers.

Christian Burns
•So I should still file right away even with severance?
0 coins
Jenna Sloan
•Yes, file immediately. Let Washington ESD determine how the severance affects your claim timing.

Pro tip: file online early in the morning or late at night. The system is slower during business hours when everyone's trying to access it.

•Good to know! I'll try filing tonight then

I filed the day I got laid off and still had issues. Had to verify my identity through ID.me which took forever. Just be patient and persistent.

•What's ID.me? Is that something Washington ESD requires?
0 coins
Diez Ellis
•It's an identity verification service. Some people get flagged and have to prove who they are before benefits start.

Whatever you do, don't listen to people who say wait! I know someone who waited a month thinking they needed to file during a specific time and they lost out on weeks of benefits they could never get back.

•Exactly! The benefit year starts when you file, not when you become unemployed.

Since you're filing today, keep Claimyr in mind if you run into any issues reaching Washington ESD by phone. Their system really works when you need to talk to someone about claim problems or questions.

just remember to keep filing your weekly claims even if your initial claim is still pending. Missing a week can mess up your whole benefit period

•When do I start filing weekly claims?

Heather Tyson
•You'll get instructions after you file your initial claim. Usually you can start filing weekly claims the Sunday after you apply.

Filed mine 6 months ago and the process was pretty straightforward once I got through the initial application. The key is having all your employment info ready.

•Any specific documents I should have ready besides basic employment info?

•Your social security card, driver's license, and any separation paperwork from your employer if you have it.

Don't overthink it - just file today. Washington ESD's online system walks you through everything step by step. Took me maybe 30 minutes to complete.

One more thing - make sure you're available for work and actively seeking employment. Washington ESD requires you to be able and available for work to receive benefits.

Hope everything goes smoothly, but if you need to reach Washington ESD for any reason, remember that Claimyr option. Sometimes it's the only way to get through when you really need help.
