How much money unemployment benefits pay in Washington ESD - need to know amounts

I'm trying to figure out how much money unemployment benefits actually pay here in Washington state. I lost my job last month and need to know what kind of weekly benefit amount I can expect from Washington ESD. My gross pay was around $4,200 per month at my last job. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? I've heard different numbers from people and want to know what's realistic before I get my hopes up.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount (WBA) based on your highest earning quarter in your base year. The maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is $999 per week. They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then multiply by 0.0385 to get your weekly amount. So if you made around $13,000 in your highest quarter, you'd get close to the maximum.

Thanks! That's really helpful. Do you know if they count overtime hours in that calculation?

0 coins

Yes, all wages including overtime count toward your base period earnings. Just make sure Washington ESD has accurate wage records from your employer.

0 coins

the formula is confusing but basically if you made decent money you'll get somewhere between $300-900 per week depending on your earnings. I was making about $3800/month and got $624 weekly

0 coins

That sounds about right for what I'm hoping for. Did it take long to find out your exact amount?

0 coins

took about 2 weeks after filing to get the monetary determination letter with my weekly benefit amount

0 coins

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my benefit calculation and can never reach anyone. Their phone system is impossible! Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there about benefit amounts?

0 coins

I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents by handling the phone calls for you. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Really saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

Interesting, never heard of that before. Does it actually work to reach real Washington ESD people?

0 coins

Yes! They connect you directly to Washington ESD agents. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator tool but I found it wasn't very accurate compared to what I actually received. My calculated amount was $567 but my actual weekly benefit ended up being $489.

0 coins

That's a pretty big difference! Do you know why it was lower than expected?

0 coins

Turns out some of my wages from a previous job weren't reported correctly by the employer. That's why talking to Washington ESD directly is so important to verify everything.

0 coins

This is exactly why wage verification is crucial. Always check your quarterly wage statements to make sure employers reported your earnings correctly to Washington ESD.

0 coins

just filed my claim yesterday, when do I find out how much I'll get?

0 coins

You should receive your monetary determination within 1-2 weeks of filing. It will show your weekly benefit amount, maximum benefit amount, and benefit year dates.

0 coins

ok thanks, hoping it's enough to cover my bills

0 coins

Don't forget that unemployment benefits are taxable income. Washington ESD will send you a 1099-G at tax time. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments if you want.

0 coins

Good point! How much should I expect to have withheld for taxes?

0 coins

They withhold 10% for federal taxes if you elect that option. No state income tax in Washington so that's all you need to worry about.

0 coins

I thought the max was higher than $999? Didn't they increase it recently?

0 coins

The maximum weekly benefit amount gets adjusted annually based on the state average weekly wage. For 2025 it's $999, up from $929 in 2024.

0 coins

ah ok that makes sense, thanks for clarifying

0 coins

WASHINGTON ESD'S BENEFIT SYSTEM IS SO COMPLICATED! Why can't they just tell you upfront what you'll get instead of making everyone wait weeks to find out?? I needed to know my benefit amount to plan my budget but had to guess for weeks.

0 coins

I feel you on this, the whole system is frustrating to navigate

0 coins

The delay is because they need to verify your wage records with all your employers from the base period. It takes time to process all that information accurately.

0 coins

My friend told me you can get up to $1000 per week but that seems too high. Is that really possible?

0 coins

The maximum is $999 for 2025, so your friend is close. But you'd need to have earned around $67,000 in your highest quarter to qualify for the maximum amount.

0 coins

wow that's a lot of money to earn in 3 months, probably won't hit the max then

0 coins

Does part time work affect how much you get? I might need to take some gig work while collecting

0 coins

Yes, if you earn more than your weekly benefit amount minus $5, Washington ESD will reduce your weekly payment dollar for dollar. You have to report all earnings when you file your weekly claim.

0 coins

so if I get $500/week and earn $300, I'd still get $200 from unemployment?

0 coins

Not quite. With the $5 disregard, you'd get $495 - $300 = $195. But definitely report all earnings to avoid overpayment issues later.

0 coins

Update on my earlier comment - I actually tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it worked! Finally got through to Washington ESD to ask about my benefit calculation. They confirmed my weekly amount and explained why it was different from the online calculator.

0 coins

That's awesome! How long did it take them to connect you?

0 coins

Way faster than calling myself. Took about 30 minutes total and I was talking to an actual Washington ESD representative who could look up my account.

0 coins

remember you only get benefits for a maximum of 26 weeks in most cases, so plan accordingly even if your weekly amount is good

0 coins

Good reminder. Is there any way to extend benefits beyond 26 weeks?

0 coins

Extended benefits can sometimes be available during periods of high unemployment, but that's determined by economic conditions and isn't guaranteed.

0 coins

I made around $50k last year, any guess what my weekly benefit might be?

0 coins

It depends on how that $50k was distributed across quarters, but you're probably looking at somewhere between $400-600 per week if it was fairly evenly distributed.

0 coins

that would definitely help with my mortgage payments, thanks

0 coins

The whole base period thing is confusing. Which quarters do they actually look at?

0 coins

Washington ESD uses the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file your claim. So if you file in January 2025, they'd look at January-March 2024, April-June 2024, July-September 2024, and October-December 2024.

0 coins

ok that makes more sense, so recent earnings matter most

0 coins

What if you had multiple jobs? Do they add all the wages together?

0 coins

Yes, all covered employment wages from all employers during your base period are combined to calculate your benefit amount.

0 coins

good to know, I had two part time jobs so hopefully that helps my benefit amount

0 coins

been on unemployment before and the weekly amount barely covered my rent, hope it's better this time around

0 coins

same here, it's tough to make ends meet on unemployment even with the maximum amount

0 coins

Unemployment is designed to replace about 50% of your average weekly wage, so it's not meant to fully replace your income. That's why finding new employment is the priority.

0 coins

Can someone explain the difference between weekly benefit amount and maximum benefit amount? I'm confused by the terminology on the Washington ESD website.

0 coins

Weekly benefit amount (WBA) is what you get each week. Maximum benefit amount (MBA) is the total you can receive during your entire benefit year - usually 26 times your WBA.

0 coins

ah that makes perfect sense now, thanks for the clear explanation

0 coins

I heard if you quit your job you can't get unemployment, is that true? wondering if benefit amounts are different for people who got laid off vs fired

0 coins

Generally you need to be unemployed through no fault of your own to qualify. Quitting without good cause usually disqualifies you. But if you do qualify, your benefit amount is calculated the same way regardless of why you became unemployed.

0 coins

ok good to know, I was laid off so should be fine

0 coins

For anyone still struggling to reach Washington ESD about benefit amounts, I also used Claimyr after seeing it mentioned here. Really works - got connected to an agent who walked me through exactly how my weekly benefit was calculated and why it was that specific amount.

0 coins

Seems like a few people have had success with that service. Might be worth trying if I need to talk to someone about my benefits.

0 coins

Definitely worth it if you need actual answers from Washington ESD staff. Way better than playing phone tag for weeks.
