How much is my unemployment check going to be in Washington state?

I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm trying to figure out how much my weekly benefit amount will be. I was making $4,200 per month at my last job for about 8 months before I got laid off. I know they look at your earnings from the base period but I'm confused about how they calculate it. Does anyone know the formula Washington ESD uses? I need to budget for the next few months while I'm job searching.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount (WBA) based on your highest earning quarter during your base period. They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then that's your weekly amount. But there's also a maximum weekly benefit - I think it's around $999 right now for 2025.

Thanks! So if I made about $12,600 in my highest quarter, that would be around $485 per week?

0 coins

Yeah that sounds about right. You should get your monetary determination letter within a week or two that will show your exact WBA.

0 coins

The calculation can be tricky because they use a specific base period. For claims filed in 2025, they usually look at earnings from October 2023 through September 2024, unless you qualify for alternate base period. Did you work consistently during that time frame?

0 coins

I only started my last job in May 2024, so most of my base period earnings would be from that job. I had a different job before that but made less money.

0 coins

That might actually work in your favor since they'll use your highest quarter. Washington ESD will send you a breakdown showing all four quarters of your base period.

I was in a similar situation trying to figure out my benefit amount. The waiting was killing me so I ended up using Claimyr to get through to an Washington ESD agent who could check my claim status and explain the calculation. Way better than trying to call for hours. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Never heard of that service. Does it actually work for reaching Washington ESD?

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me. Got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of calling all day and getting busy signals.

0 coins

Interesting, might have to try that if I can't get through the normal way.

0 coins

Don't forget you also have to meet the minimum earnings requirement. I think you need at least $4,800 in your base period and earnings in at least two quarters. Sounds like you should be fine though with 8 months of work.

0 coins

Good point, I hadn't thought about that requirement. I definitely have earnings in multiple quarters so that shouldn't be an issue.

0 coins

The maximum weekly benefit amount changes every year based on the state average wage. For 2025 I believe it's $999 per week. You probably won't hit the max but it's good to know the ceiling.

0 coins

Yeah I definitely won't be anywhere near the maximum. My calculation puts me around $485 per week which seems reasonable.

0 coins

That sounds like a solid estimate. You'll know for sure once you get your monetary determination.

0 coins

ugh the waiting is the worst part!! I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't gotten my determination letter. Washington ESD is so slow with everything

0 coins

Three weeks seems long. Have you checked your eServices account online? Sometimes the determination shows up there before you get the paper letter.

0 coins

I check every day but it just says pending. So frustrating when you need to know how much money you'll have coming in.

0 coins

Update: I got my monetary determination today! My weekly benefit amount is $492, so my estimate was pretty close. Thanks everyone for the help understanding how Washington ESD calculates it.

0 coins

Great news! That's a decent amount that should help while you're job searching.

0 coins

Awesome, glad it worked out. Now you just need to file your weekly claims and do your job search activities.

0 coins

Yeah I need to figure out the job search requirements next. I think it's 3 job contacts per week?

0 coins

I'm still confused about the base period thing. If I file my claim in January 2025, which quarters do they look at exactly?

0 coins

For claims filed in January 2025, your base period would be October 2023 through September 2024. It's always a year that ends about 3-4 months before you file.

0 coins

That seems like such old information to base benefits on. What if you made way more money recently?

0 coins

You might qualify for alternate base period if your recent earnings are higher. Washington ESD will automatically check that if your regular base period doesn't give you enough benefits.

0 coins

Does anyone know if they count bonuses and overtime in the calculation? I had some really good overtime quarters last year.

0 coins

Yes, all wages count including overtime, bonuses, commissions, tips - basically anything that shows up on your W-2.

0 coins

Perfect, that should boost my benefit amount then. Thanks!

0 coins

The whole system is so complicated. Why can't Washington ESD just make it simple and give everyone the same amount based on a percentage of their last job salary?

0 coins

It's designed to be fair across different employment patterns. Someone who worked seasonally or had gaps would be disadvantaged by just using the most recent job.

0 coins

I guess that makes sense but it's still confusing for regular people to figure out.

0 coins

For anyone still waiting on their determination or having trouble reaching Washington ESD about benefit calculations, I really recommend trying Claimyr. Saved me so much frustration when I needed answers about my claim.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? Is it worth it?

0 coins

It's definitely worth it if you're stuck and need to talk to someone. Way less stressful than calling Washington ESD all day and getting nowhere.

0 coins

I made $5,200 a month for 6 months then got laid off. Anyone know roughly what my weekly benefit would be?

0 coins

Hard to say without knowing your full base period, but if that $5,200/month was your highest quarter you'd be looking at around $600 per week, assuming that was about $15,600 in a quarter.

0 coins

That would be amazing if it's that much. I'm really hoping it's enough to cover my rent and bills.

0 coins

Don't forget you'll still owe taxes on unemployment benefits. Plan to set aside some money for that.

0 coins

Quick question - do they count my last paycheck that included vacation payout in the benefit calculation?

0 coins

Yes, vacation payout counts as wages for the period it covers. So if you got paid out for 2 weeks vacation, that counts toward your quarterly earnings.

0 coins

Great, that should help my calculation then since it was a decent amount.

0 coins

Anyone know how long it takes to get your first unemployment payment after you're approved? I just got my determination letter.

0 coins

Usually about a week after you file your first weekly claim, assuming there are no issues. Make sure you file your weekly claim right away.

0 coins

Perfect, I'll file it today. Thanks for the heads up!

0 coins

The monetary determination letter is actually pretty detailed once you get it. Shows all your quarterly earnings and explains exactly how they calculated your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

Yeah mine was really helpful. I could see exactly which quarters they used and how they got to my $492 per week.

0 coins

It's nice when government agencies actually provide clear explanations for once!

0 coins

PSA: Make sure your address is current with Washington ESD or you might not get your determination letter. I had to update mine online before they could send it.

0 coins

Good reminder! You can update your address through eServices on the Washington ESD website.

0 coins

Exactly, it's pretty easy to do online if you need to change it.

0 coins

I'm curious if anyone has had their benefit amount recalculated after they got their initial determination? Is that possible?

0 coins

Usually only if there was an error in the original calculation or if alternate base period gives you a higher amount. Washington ESD should automatically check alternate base period if you qualify.

0 coins

Okay good to know. I think my calculation is correct but wanted to make sure there wasn't some way to appeal it.

0 coins

Does the weekly benefit amount stay the same for your entire claim period or can it change?

0 coins

It stays the same throughout your benefit year unless there are very specific circumstances like a wage correction. Your WBA is locked in when your claim is established.

0 coins

That's what I figured but wanted to confirm. Thanks!

0 coins

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD about benefit calculations or claim issues, seriously consider using a service like Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked great for getting connected to an agent quickly.

0 coins

I might have to try that. I've been calling for days trying to ask about my alternate base period and can never get through.

0 coins

That's exactly the type of question they can help with. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

0 coins

Thanks for the tip! Good to know there are options when the regular phone system doesn't work.
