How much do you make for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
I'm thinking about filing for unemployment but I have no idea how much money I'd actually get from Washington ESD. I've been working retail for the past 2 years making about $16/hour and I'm wondering if it's even worth applying for benefits if I lose my job. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? Is there a minimum or maximum you can get?

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your earnings from the past year. They look at your highest quarter of earnings and divide by 26. The minimum weekly benefit is $295 and maximum is $999 for 2025. With your work history at $16/hour, you'd probably qualify for somewhere in the middle range.

•That's actually more than I expected! Do they count overtime hours in the calculation?

Natalie Wang
•Yes, all wages reported to Washington ESD count including overtime, bonuses, and commissions.

i think its like 60% of what you were making but not sure about the exact math

•It's not exactly 60%. Washington ESD uses a more complex formula based on your base year earnings. The percentage varies depending on your wage level.

I was in a similar situation last year and had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about my benefit amount. Kept calling the main number but could never get past the busy signal. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Definitely worth checking out if you can't get through on your own.

•Never heard of that before, does it actually work? The Washington ESD phone system is impossible.

•Yeah it worked for me. I was able to speak with someone within an hour instead of calling for days.

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator you can use to estimate your weekly amount. Just need to enter your quarterly wages from the past year.

•I'll try to find that calculator. Do you remember where on the site it is?

•It's under the 'Apply for Benefits' section, but honestly it might be easier to just call Washington ESD directly for an accurate estimate.

WASHINGTON ESD TAKES FOREVER TO PROCESS ANYTHING!! I filed 6 weeks ago and still haven't gotten my first payment. They say my claim is in adjudication but won't tell me why or how long it takes.

•Adjudication can take 4-6 weeks depending on the issue. Have you tried calling to check on the status?

•I've called probably 50 times and either get disconnected or told to wait. This system is broken.

For 2025, Washington ESD uses your base year (first four of the last five completed quarters) to determine your weekly benefit amount. Your WBA is calculated as your highest quarter earnings divided by 26, but there are also alternative calculations if you don't qualify under the standard method.

•What if I haven't worked a full year? I started my current job about 8 months ago.

•You might still qualify if you have enough earnings in your base year. Washington ESD requires at least $3,800 in total base year wages.

my friend got like $450 a week but she was making way more than $16/hour. probably depends on your specific situation

•That sounds about right for someone making more. I'm hoping I can get at least $350-400 a week.

Don't forget you have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits! Washington ESD will send you a 1099-G at the end of the year. You can choose to have federal taxes withheld from your weekly payments.

Michael Adams
•Oh I didn't think about taxes. Is it worth having them withhold or just pay at tax time?

Joshua Wood
•I'd recommend having 10% withheld for federal taxes to avoid a big bill later.

The whole Washington ESD system is confusing. I spent hours trying to figure out if I qualified and how much I'd get. Ended up using Claimyr to get connected to someone who could explain everything properly.

•How much did that cost? I'm worried about spending money when I don't have a job.

•It was worth it to actually get answers instead of guessing. Way better than trying to navigate the phone system myself.

I got $312 a week when I was unemployed last year. Was making about $15/hour at Target before I got laid off. Not enough to live on but better than nothing.

Michael Adams
•That's close to what I'd probably get then. Did you have any trouble with the weekly claims?

Emily Parker
•Weekly claims weren't too bad once I figured out the system. Just have to remember to file every week.

been trying to call washington esd for weeks about my benefit amount but keep getting hung up on after waiting on hold forever

•That's exactly why I used Claimyr. The regular phone system is basically useless with how backed up they are.

Just to clarify for anyone reading this - your weekly benefit amount also depends on whether you have any part-time earnings while collecting. Washington ESD will reduce your benefits dollar-for-dollar after you earn more than your weekly benefit amount.

•Good to know! I was thinking about doing some gig work if I get laid off.

•You can work part-time and still collect some benefits, just make sure to report all earnings on your weekly claim.

My sister qualified for the maximum $999 a week because she was making really good money as a nurse before she got unemployment. The calculation really depends on your earnings history.

•Wow that's a lot! I definitely won't get close to the maximum but even half that would help.

Don't even bother trying to call Washington ESD during normal business hours. I finally got through at 7:45 AM on a Tuesday after calling the minute they opened.

•I tried that strategy too but still couldn't get through. The phone system is completely overwhelmed.

Benjamin Johnson
•Yeah it took me like 20 tries even calling right when they opened. Super frustrating.

One important thing to remember is that Washington ESD benefits last for up to 26 weeks in most cases. So if you qualify for $400 a week, that's potentially $10,400 total over the benefit year if you remain unemployed the whole time.

•That's actually substantial help while job searching. I feel better about potentially filing now.

whatever you do make sure you keep track of your job search activities because washington esd requires 3 job search contacts per week and they do audit people

I was surprised how fast I got approved once I finally submitted my application. The Washington ESD online system worked pretty well for filing the initial claim.

Michael Adams
•That's encouraging! How long did it take to get your first payment?

Aaliyah Reed
•About 2 weeks after filing, which wasn't too bad. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time.

The benefit estimator on WorkSourceWA might also help you get an idea of what you'd qualify for before you file with Washington ESD.

Hope this thread helped answer your question! The benefit amount calculation can seem complicated but Washington ESD does a decent job of explaining it once you get into the system.
