How much can you claim for unemployment benefits in Washington state?

I'm thinking about filing for unemployment but I have no idea how much I might be eligible for. I've been working at a retail job for about 18 months making around $16/hour, about 35 hours a week. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount? I'm trying to figure out if it's even worth it to apply or if the amount would be too small to help with my bills.

Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter from the past 18 months to calculate your weekly benefit amount. The maximum weekly benefit is currently $999 per week, but most people get way less than that. For your income level, you're probably looking at somewhere between $250-400 per week depending on your exact earnings history.

That's actually more than I expected! How do they determine which quarter to use?

0 coins

They look at your base period which is the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. They use whichever quarter you earned the most in.

0 coins

You definitely should apply if you're eligible! I was making similar money and got about $320 per week. The process through Washington ESD isn't too bad once you get through to them. Though calling can be a nightmare - I spent hours trying to get through.

0 coins

OMG yes the phone situation is ridiculous! I've been trying to reach someone at Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status.

I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an agent way faster. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration.

The weekly benefit calculation is pretty straightforward but the eligibility requirements are where it gets tricky. You need to have earned at least $7,000 in your base period and meet other work requirements. Plus you have to be able and available for work and actively searching.

0 coins

What counts as actively searching? I've heard different things about the job search requirements.

0 coins

You need to make at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. This includes applying for jobs, networking, going to job fairs, etc. Washington ESD is pretty strict about this.

0 coins

Wait, I thought it was 2 activities per week? Did they change it recently?

0 coins

I just went through this whole process last month. The benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website is actually pretty accurate if you want to get an estimate before filing. You'll need your wage information from the past 18 months though.

0 coins

Thanks! I'll try that calculator. Did you have any issues with the application process?

0 coins

The online application was fine, but I had some verification issues that took weeks to resolve. That's when I really needed to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

Just remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income! A lot of people forget about that and get surprised at tax time. You can have taxes withheld or pay quarterly estimated taxes.

0 coins

Good point! I learned that the hard way last year. Definitely have them withhold the taxes.

0 coins

Oh wow, I didn't know that. Thanks for mentioning it!

0 coins

The timing of when you file matters too. Your benefit year starts the week you file, so don't delay if you're eligible. I waited a few weeks and basically lost out on those benefits.

0 coins

This is so important! I made the same mistake and it cost me like $800 in benefits I could have received.

0 coins

I definitely won't wait then. Better to apply sooner rather than later.

0 coins

One thing to keep in mind is that if you're working part-time while claiming unemployment, they'll reduce your weekly benefit based on how much you earn. But you can still qualify for partial benefits in many cases.

0 coins

That's good to know! I might be able to pick up some freelance work while I'm looking for something full-time.

0 coins

Yeah, just make sure to report all your earnings on your weekly claims or you could get in trouble for overpayment.

0 coins

I've been on unemployment for 2 months now and the weekly claims process is pretty easy once you get used to it. You just have to file every week and answer questions about your job search and any work you did.

0 coins

How long does it usually take to get approved? I'm worried about waiting weeks without income.

0 coins

Mine took about 2 weeks to get approved, but I know some people have to wait longer if their claim goes into adjudication.

0 coins

The adjudication process can be a real pain. That's when Washington ESD has to investigate something about your claim - like why you left your job or if there are any wage discrepancies. It can add weeks to the process.

0 coins

How would I know if my claim would go into adjudication?

0 coins

You usually won't know until after you file. It depends on what you put in your application and what your employer reports.

0 coins

I got stuck in adjudication for 6 weeks! Had to use Claimyr to finally get through to someone who could explain what was happening with my claim.

0 coins

Don't forget about the waiting week! In Washington, you have to serve one unpaid waiting week before you start receiving benefits. So even if you get approved quickly, your first payment won't be until week 2.

0 coins

Wait, so you don't get paid for the first week at all? That seems unfair.

0 coins

Nope, it's just how the system works. Most states have a waiting week. You still have to file that first week though.

0 coins

The maximum duration for regular unemployment benefits in Washington is 26 weeks, but that can vary based on the unemployment rate and your specific situation. Extended benefits might be available during high unemployment periods.

0 coins

26 weeks seems like a decent amount of time to find something new. Hopefully I won't need it all!

0 coins

Yeah, it's better than some states. Just make sure you're really actively looking because they do check up on your job search activities.

0 coins

If you're thinking about applying, just do it! The worst they can say is no. I was hesitant because I thought I wouldn't qualify but ended up getting approved and it really helped me through a tough time.

0 coins

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone! I'm definitely going to apply this week.

0 coins

Good luck! The Washington ESD system can be frustrating but it's there to help people like us.

One more tip - if you have trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone for any reason, I've heard good things about Claimyr. My sister used it when she was having issues with her weekly claims and it worked really well for getting connected to an agent.

0 coins

Is that the service with the video demo? I think I saw that mentioned earlier in this thread.

0 coins

Yeah, that's the one! Really saved her a lot of time and stress dealing with the phone system.

0 coins

Just make sure you have all your documentation ready when you apply - Social Security number, driver's license, employment history for the past 18 months, and bank account info for direct deposit. It makes the process much smoother.

0 coins

Thanks! I'll gather all that stuff before I start the application.

0 coins

Also keep copies of everything you submit. You never know when you might need to reference it later.

0 coins

The whole system seems overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine it's not too bad. The hardest part is usually just getting started and dealing with any initial issues that come up.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear. I was pretty intimidated by the whole process.

0 coins

We've all been there! Don't hesitate to ask questions if you get stuck. There are people here who have been through it all.
