How much do you usually get for unemployment benefits in Washington?
I'm thinking about filing for unemployment since my hours got cut to almost nothing at my retail job. I've never filed before and honestly have no idea what to expect for the weekly benefit amount. I make about $16/hour when I do work, but lately it's only been like 10-15 hours a week which isn't enough to pay my bills. Does anyone know roughly what Washington ESD pays out? I tried looking on their website but couldn't find a clear answer about actual dollar amounts.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your earnings in your base period, which is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. The maximum weekly benefit amount for 2025 is $999, but most people get way less than that. Your benefit is roughly 3.85% of your total base period wages, divided by 52 weeks.

•That's confusing - so it's not based on my current wages but what I made in previous quarters? I've been at this job for about 8 months now.

•Exactly. So if you started 8 months ago, they'll look at your wages from the quarters where you were working. If you didn't work much in those base period quarters, your benefit amount will be lower.

i get $347 a week and i was making about $18/hour full time before i got laid off. it's not amazing but it helps cover rent and groceries

•That's actually more than I thought it would be. Did you have any trouble getting approved?

•nah it was pretty straightforward, just took about 2 weeks to get my first payment

The minimum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $295 as of 2025. To qualify, you need to have earned at least $8,910 in your base period. Given your situation with reduced hours, you might want to file soon because you can sometimes get partial benefits even while working reduced hours.

•Wait, I can get partial benefits while still working? I didn't know that was possible!

•Yes, it's called partial unemployment. As long as you're working less than full-time and earning less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you may qualify for partial benefits.

•Just make sure you report all your hours and earnings when you file your weekly claims or you'll get in trouble later.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for three weeks to check on my claim status and it's impossible. The phone lines are always busy and when I do get through, I get disconnected. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there? I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that supposedly helps you get through to agents, but I'm wondering if it's legit.

•I used Claimyr last month when my claim was stuck in adjudication. It actually worked - they got me connected to an agent within like 30 minutes. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Hmm sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•I'd rather pay something than waste entire days trying to get through on my own. The time I saved was worth it.

Thanks everyone for the info! One more question - do I need to be completely unemployed to file or can I file now with my reduced hours?

Mary Bates
•You can file now with reduced hours. Just make sure you're available for full-time work and actively seeking employment, as those are requirements for receiving benefits.

•Perfect, I'll start the application process today. Hopefully it goes smoothly!

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator tool that can give you an estimate based on your wages. It's pretty accurate from what I've seen.

•I'll check that out, thanks! I tried finding it before but maybe I wasn't looking in the right place.

•It's under the 'Unemployment Benefits' section, then look for 'Benefit Amount Calculator' or something similar.

Just a heads up - make sure you have all your employment information ready when you file. They'll need your employer's name, address, dates of employment, and reason for separation. Also keep track of any job search activities because you'll need to report those on your weekly claims.

Brielle Johnson
•Good point about the job search requirement. How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?
0 coins
Lim Wong
•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week, but they have to be legitimate job search activities. Just applying online counts, but so does networking, attending job fairs, etc.

•And you have to keep a log of all your job search activities in case they audit you later.

ugh the whole system is so complicated. i've been on unemployment for 2 months now and i'm still confused about half the stuff they ask for on the weekly claims

•It does get easier once you get into a routine. The weekly claims become pretty automatic after a few weeks.

•i hope so because i'm always worried i'm going to mess something up and lose my benefits

My sister-in-law gets about $425 a week and she was making around $22/hour before she got laid off from her office job. She said it took about 3 weeks from filing to getting her first payment, but that included some back-and-forth with Washington ESD about her previous employer.

•That's helpful to know about the timeline. I'm hoping mine will be more straightforward since I'm still technically employed, just with very few hours.

•Yeah, partial unemployment claims are usually faster to process from what I've heard.

Make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if you haven't gotten approved yet. If you miss filing a weekly claim, you can lose benefits for that week and they won't pay you retroactively.

Brielle Johnson
•So I should file weekly claims right away, even before I know if I'm approved?
0 coins
Fidel Carson
•Yes, start filing them as soon as your claim is submitted. The system will tell you when to file your first weekly claim.

•This is super important advice. I know someone who missed their first two weekly claims and lost out on like $800.

I had a similar situation last year where my hours got cut dramatically. I was getting about $280 per week in partial benefits while working maybe 12 hours a week at my old job. It definitely helped bridge the gap while I looked for something better.

Brielle Johnson
•That's encouraging! Did you have to do anything special for the partial benefits or just report your hours like normal?
0 coins
Xan Dae
•Just report your hours and earnings honestly on your weekly claims. The system automatically calculates your partial benefit amount.

One thing to watch out for - if you get offered more hours at your current job and turn them down, that could affect your benefits. Washington ESD expects you to accept available work.

Brielle Johnson
•Good to know. My manager hasn't offered me more hours, but I'll keep that in mind if they do.

Fiona Gallagher
•Yeah, just be honest about everything. The system is pretty forgiving if you're upfront about your situation.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit when you file your claim. Getting a debit card in the mail can take extra time and then you have to wait for it to arrive before you can access your benefits.

Brielle Johnson
•Great advice! I definitely want to get paid as quickly as possible once I'm approved.
0 coins
Thais Soares
•Exactly. Direct deposit usually processes within 1-2 business days of your claim being paid.

I'm dealing with a different issue - my claim has been stuck in adjudication for over a month and I can't get anyone at Washington ESD on the phone. Has anyone had luck with that Claimyr service mentioned earlier? I'm getting desperate.

Lorenzo McCormick
•Yes, I mentioned it earlier. It really does work. I was skeptical too but after wasting weeks trying to get through on my own, it was worth it to actually talk to someone.

•I think I'm going to try it. At this point I'll try anything to get my claim moving again.

The waiting is the worst part of the whole process. I remember when I first filed, every day felt like forever waiting for that first payment. But once things get rolling, it becomes much more routine.
0 coins
Brielle Johnson
•That's reassuring. I'm trying to be patient but I really need this to work out financially.

•Hang in there. Most claims get approved eventually, it just takes time for the system to process everything.

Don't forget that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or you'll owe at the end of the year.
0 coins
Brielle Johnson
•Oh wow, I didn't think about taxes. Thanks for the reminder!
0 coins
Aidan Percy
•Yeah, it's 10% federal withholding if you choose to have it taken out. Some people prefer to handle it themselves but it's easier to just have it withheld.

Good luck with your claim! The system isn't perfect but it's there to help people in situations exactly like yours. Don't let the complexity discourage you from filing.

I second the recommendation about Claimyr if you need to reach Washington ESD. I tried it when my payment got held up due to some verification issue, and they got me through to an agent who resolved it in one phone call. Sometimes it's worth paying for help when you really need it.

•How long did it take them to get you connected?

•Maybe 20-30 minutes? Way better than the hours I spent trying to call myself and never getting through.

Just wanted to add - keep copies of everything you submit to Washington ESD. Emails, documents, screenshots of your weekly claims, everything. You never know when you might need to reference something later.
0 coins
Brielle Johnson
•That's smart. I'll start a folder for all my unemployment paperwork right away.

Hattie Carson
•Definitely. It saved me when they questioned something about my claim months later and I had all the documentation to back up my responses.

Final thought - don't be afraid to ask questions if you're unsure about anything. It's better to ask and get it right than to guess and potentially mess up your claim.
