How much do people make on unemployment in Washington - what's the actual weekly benefit amount?

I'm trying to figure out if it's even worth filing for unemployment benefits in Washington state. I've been working part-time making about $18/hour and got laid off last week. My friend said unemployment doesn't pay much but I'm not sure what the actual numbers are. Does anyone know how much Washington ESD actually pays per week? I've heard different amounts from different people and the website is confusing with all the calculations.

Washington unemployment benefits are calculated based on your earnings during your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. The weekly benefit amount ranges from $295 minimum to $1015 maximum as of 2025. Your exact amount depends on your quarterly wages during the base period.

Thanks! So it's based on what I made before, not just a flat rate for everyone?

0 coins

Exactly. Washington ESD uses a formula - they take your two highest quarters of earnings in your base period, add them together, and divide by 52. That gives you your weekly benefit amount, but it can't exceed the maximum.

i was making like $45k a year and got $487 per week from washington esd. not great but better than nothing i guess

0 coins

That's actually not too bad! How long did it take to get your first payment?

0 coins

took about 3 weeks because they had to verify my employment. the waiting was the worst part honestly

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your benefit calculation or claim status, I had good luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have this service that helps you actually reach an agent instead of getting stuck in phone tree hell. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful for me.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. How does it actually work? Do they just call for you or something?

0 coins

They basically handle the calling and waiting part, then connect you when they reach an actual person. Saved me hours of calling and getting disconnected.

The amount also depends on whether you qualify for any additional benefits or if you have dependents. Washington ESD adds money for dependent allowances in some cases. Plus there might be federal additions depending on economic conditions, though those change.

0 coins

I don't have any dependents, so I guess it would just be the base amount for me.

0 coins

Base amount is still decent if you qualify for the higher end. My sister got almost $800/week when she was laid off from her tech job.

0 coins

ugh the whole system is so confusing! I applied 2 months ago and still don't know exactly how much I'm supposed to get. My claim is stuck in adjudication and nobody at washington esd will tell me anything useful when I finally get through

0 coins

Adjudication can take weeks unfortunately. Have you checked your SecureAccess Washington account to see if there are any issues you need to resolve?

0 coins

yeah I check it every day, nothing shows up that I need to do. just says in progress

0 coins

This is exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr helped me. When you're stuck in adjudication limbo, having someone who can actually get you connected to speak with an agent makes all the difference.

From what I understand, if you were working part-time at $18/hour, your benefit amount might be on the lower end unless you were working a lot of hours consistently. Washington ESD looks at your total quarterly earnings, not just your hourly wage.

0 coins

I was working about 25-30 hours per week for the past year, so hopefully that's enough to get something decent.

0 coins

That should give you a reasonable benefit amount. You can use the benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website to get an estimate before you file.

0 coins

Whatever you do, make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week once you're approved. Missing even one week can mess up your whole claim and then you have to start over with the phone calls to fix it.

0 coins

Good to know! Is there a specific day I have to file by?

0 coins

You have to file your weekly claim every week by the end of the week you're claiming. Most people do it Sunday for the previous week.

I always set a reminder on my phone because I almost forgot once and panicked lol

The job search requirements are probably more important to think about than just the money. You have to apply for jobs and keep a log or they'll cut off your benefits even if you're getting a decent amount.

0 coins

How many jobs do you have to apply for each week?

0 coins

I think it's 3 job contacts per week minimum, but check the current requirements because they change them sometimes.

0 coins

Just to give you another data point - I was making about $50k salary and got $520 per week from Washington ESD. It covered most of my rent which was huge when I was out of work for 4 months.

0 coins

That's really helpful, thanks! Sounds like it might actually be worth filing then.

0 coins

Definitely file! Even if it's not a ton of money, every bit helps when you're unemployed.

0 coins

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN AND THEY DONT CARE ABOUT WORKING PEOPLE! I applied in November and still haven't gotten a single payment because of their stupid adjudication process. Meanwhile bills keep coming...

0 coins

That's really frustrating. Have you tried reaching out to your state representative's office? Sometimes they can help with Washington ESD issues.

0 coins

I might try that. At this point I'll try anything to get someone's attention.

0 coins

Does anyone know if the amounts have gone up recently? I got unemployment like 3 years ago but wondering if they've increased the maximum benefit amount since then.

0 coins

Yes, Washington adjusts the maximum benefit amount annually based on average wages. The $1015 maximum I mentioned is for 2025.

0 coins

Nice, that's higher than what it was when I was on unemployment. Good to see they're keeping up with cost of living somewhat.

0 coins

One thing to keep in mind is that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have taxes withheld or pay quarterly, but don't forget about it come tax time!

0 coins

Oh good point, I hadn't thought about the tax implications. Is it taxed like regular income?

0 coins

Yes, it's taxed as regular income. Washington ESD will send you a 1099-G at the end of the year.

0 coins

honestly the hardest part isn't figuring out how much you'll get, it's actually getting through the application process without going insane from all the phone calls and waiting

0 coins

This is why I'm glad I found out about Claimyr when I did. Made the whole communication piece so much easier.

0 coins

same! the phone system at washington esd is absolutely terrible. half the time you get disconnected after waiting an hour

0 coins

If you do file, make sure you have all your employment history ready. Washington ESD will ask for employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation for every job in the past 18 months.

0 coins

Good tip! I'll gather all that info before I start the application.

0 coins

Also have your social security card and driver's license handy. The online system times out if you take too long to enter information.

0 coins

My advice is just file and see what happens. Even if the amount isn't huge, having some income while job hunting is better than nothing. Plus you've been paying into the system through your paychecks, so you might as well use it when you need it.

0 coins

You're right, I have been paying into it. Might as well get some benefit from all those deductions!

0 coins

Exactly! That's literally what unemployment insurance is for. Don't feel bad about using a safety net you've been contributing to.

0 coins

Based on your part-time work at $18/hour for 25-30 hours weekly, you'll probably qualify for a decent benefit amount. I was in a similar situation - worked part-time retail and got around $340/week from Washington ESD. It's definitely worth filing since you've been consistently employed. The calculation uses your highest earning quarters, so if you've been working those hours regularly, you should be fine. Just make sure to apply as soon as possible since there's usually a one-week waiting period before benefits start.
