How much can you receive from unemployment in Washington - what's the maximum weekly benefit?

I'm about to file for unemployment benefits in Washington and trying to figure out what I might qualify for. I've been working at a tech company making about $75,000 a year for the past 18 months. Does anyone know what the maximum weekly benefit amount is right now? I've heard it's based on your earnings but I can't find clear info on Washington ESD's website about the actual dollar amounts. Also wondering if there are any other factors that affect how much you can get besides your work history?

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $999 per week as of 2025. Your benefit amount is calculated based on your highest earning quarter in your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. With your salary of $75k, you should qualify for a decent amount but it depends on how your earnings were distributed across those quarters.

Thanks! So if I made around $18,750 per quarter consistently, what would that translate to for weekly benefits?

0 coins

Your weekly benefit would be roughly 3.85% of your highest quarter earnings divided by 13 weeks. So around $18,750 divided by 13 = about $1,442, then multiply by 0.0385 = roughly $555 per week. That's a rough estimate though - Washington ESD has their own calculation formula.

Just be aware that the benefit calculation can be tricky and Washington ESD's automated system sometimes gets it wrong initially. I had to call them three times to get my benefit amount corrected because they weren't counting all my quarters properly. The phone lines are absolutely brutal to get through though - I spent hours on hold.

ugh same here, I called like 15 times over two weeks and kept getting disconnected

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. I was skeptical at first but it actually got me connected within a few hours instead of spending days calling.

Interesting, I'll have to check that out. Anything is better than sitting on hold for 3+ hours just to get hung up on.

Besides the weekly amount, remember you can collect for up to 26 weeks in Washington (unless there are extensions available). So even if you get $600/week, that's potentially $15,600 total over the full benefit year. You also need to meet the job search requirements - I think it's 3 job contacts per week now.

0 coins

Good point about the job search requirement. Do you know if they're strict about that? Like do they actually verify the contacts?

0 coins

They do random audits and if you get selected, you have to provide proof of your job search activities. I keep a detailed log with company names, dates, and contact methods just in case.

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator but it's not very user friendly. You have to enter your quarterly wages for the base period and it'll give you an estimate. Just remember that if you had any gaps in employment or part-time work, that can affect your benefit amount too.

0 coins

I'll try to find that calculator. My employment has been pretty steady so hopefully that works in my favor.

0 coins

the calculator is buried somewhere in their site, took me forever to find it last year

Don't forget you'll owe taxes on unemployment benefits! It's not automatically withheld unless you request it. I learned that the hard way and had to pay a big chunk at tax time.

0 coins

Oh wow, I didn't think about that. Can you have taxes withheld automatically?

0 coins

Yeah, you can request 10% federal tax withholding when you file your weekly claims. Washington doesn't have state income tax so that's not an issue here.

0 coins

I'm currently getting $847 per week and I was making about $85k before I got laid off. The amount seems fair based on what I was earning. The hardest part is actually filing the weekly claims every week - you have to remember to do it every Sunday or you lose that week's benefits.

0 coins

Good to know! Is there a reminder system or do you just have to remember on your own?

0 coins

I set a phone reminder for every Sunday morning. There's no automatic reminder from Washington ESD unfortunately.

0 coins

I missed filing one week and had to call to get it reopened. That's when I used Claimyr actually - saved me from sitting on hold all day.

Your benefit amount also depends on whether you quit or were laid off. If you quit without good cause, you might be disqualified entirely. If you were laid off due to lack of work, you should qualify for the full amount based on your earnings.

0 coins

I was laid off due to company restructuring, so that should be fine. Thanks for the heads up though.

0 coins

yeah the reason for separation is huge, they'll investigate if there's any question about it

One thing to watch out for is the waiting week. You won't get paid for your first week of unemployment even if you're eligible. It's just how the system works in Washington.

0 coins

So I should expect to wait 2 weeks before my first payment?

0 coins

Exactly. First week is the waiting week, then you file your first weekly claim, then you get paid for that second week. So about 2 weeks total before you see money.

0 coins

The $999 maximum sounds right but most people don't get the full amount. It's based on your highest quarter earnings and there's a formula they use. If you made $75k consistently, you're probably looking at somewhere between $500-700 per week.

0 coins

That range seems reasonable based on what others have said. I'll just have to wait and see what Washington ESD calculates.

0 coins

the calculation is pretty complicated, I never would have figured it out on my own

0 coins

Make sure you apply as soon as possible after your last day of work. There's no benefit to waiting and you want to get your claim started. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits.

0 coins

Good advice. My last day is this Friday so I'll file over the weekend.

0 coins

Yeah don't wait, I delayed filing for a week and regretted it

Washington's unemployment system is actually pretty decent compared to other states. The benefit amounts are reasonable and the online system works most of the time. Just be patient with the initial processing - it can take a week or two to get your first payment.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear. I was worried about horror stories from other states.

0 coins

Yeah Washington ESD has their issues but overall it's not too bad. The phone system is the worst part.

0 coins

Agreed about the phone system being terrible. That's why services like Claimyr are so helpful - they handle the phone maze for you so you can actually talk to someone when you need help.

0 coins

Don't forget to keep looking for work while you're collecting. The job search requirement is real and they do check. I keep a spreadsheet with all my applications and contacts just to be safe.

0 coins

That's smart. I'll start a tracking system right away.

WorkSourceWA also has resources to help with job searching if you need it

With your tech background and salary level, you should qualify for a decent weekly benefit. Just make sure you have all your employment information ready when you file - dates, wages, employer info, etc. The more accurate info you provide upfront, the smoother the process will be.

0 coins

Thanks for the tip. I'll gather all my pay stubs and employment records before I start the application.

0 coins

having everything organized definitely helps, the application asks for a lot of specific details

0 coins

Just wanted to add that if you're having trouble with the online application or need to check your claim status, Washington ESD also has a mobile app that can be easier to use than the website sometimes. Also, make sure you keep copies of everything you submit - I learned that lesson when they asked me to resubmit documents I thought they already had. Good luck with your claim!

0 coins

Thanks for mentioning the mobile app! I didn't even know Washington ESD had one. And good point about keeping copies - I'll make sure to screenshot or save everything I submit. Really appreciate all the helpful advice from everyone in this thread.

One more thing to keep in mind - if you receive any severance pay, that might affect when your benefits start. Washington ESD considers severance as wages, so depending on how it's structured, you might have a delay before benefits kick in. I had a friend who got 4 weeks severance and couldn't collect unemployment until after that period ended. Just something to check on if you're getting any kind of separation package from your tech company.

0 coins

That's a really important point about severance pay! I hadn't considered that it might delay benefits. I am getting a small severance package - about 3 weeks of pay. Does anyone know if it matters whether it's paid as a lump sum vs. spread out over time? I should probably call Washington ESD to clarify how this will affect my claim timing.

0 coins

From what I understand, the structure of severance can make a difference. If it's paid as a lump sum, Washington ESD typically allocates it over the period it's meant to cover (like your 3 weeks). But if it's paid out weekly like regular wages, it might be treated differently. I'd definitely recommend calling to clarify - better to know upfront than be surprised later. You might also want to ask if you can delay filing your claim until after the severance period ends, or if you should file right away and just expect the delay.

0 coins

This severance pay issue is so confusing! I'm in a similar situation - getting laid off from a startup and they're offering me 2 weeks severance. I was planning to file for unemployment immediately but now I'm wondering if I should wait. Has anyone dealt with this recently? I'm worried about missing out on benefits if I wait too long, but I also don't want to mess up my claim by filing at the wrong time. The Washington ESD website doesn't make this very clear at all.

0 coins

@Connor Rupert I went through this exact situation last year when I got laid off from my previous job with 2 weeks severance. Here s'what I learned: you should definitely file your unemployment claim right away, even with the severance. Washington ESD will just delay your benefit start date to account for the severance period. If you wait to file, you re'actually losing out on establishing your claim date, which can affect your overall benefit year. When I filed, I reported the severance honestly and they automatically calculated that my benefits would start 2 weeks later. The key is being upfront about it in your initial application. Don t'try to game the system - just file immediately and let them handle the timing. You can always call to confirm, but in my experience the online system handled it correctly once I provided all the severance details.
