What is the maximum you can get from Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I'm trying to figure out how much I might qualify for if I file for unemployment. I've been making around $75,000 a year at my tech job for the past two years. Does anyone know what the maximum weekly benefit amount is in Washington state right now? I've looked on the Washington ESD website but it's confusing with all the calculations. Just want to know what to expect before I file my claim.

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $999 per week as of 2025. But whether you get the max depends on your earnings history over the past year. Washington ESD looks at your highest quarter earnings and uses a formula to calculate your weekly benefit amount.

•Thanks! So with my salary I should qualify for close to the maximum then?

•Probably, but they use a specific calculation based on your base year earnings. You'll need to have earned at least around $62,000 in your highest earning quarter to get the full $999.

•I had the same problem! Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to an agent. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me so much time and frustration.

The maximum is indeed $999 per week, but remember that's before taxes. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later when you file your return. Also, you can collect for up to 26 weeks in a regular benefit year, so the theoretical maximum total would be around $25,974 if you qualified for the full amount for the entire duration.

•Wait, they take taxes out of unemployment benefits? I didn't know that!

•Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can elect to have 10% federal tax withheld when you file your weekly claims, which I'd recommend to avoid a big tax bill later.

•Good to know about the taxes. I definitely want to avoid owing a bunch at tax time.

Just keep in mind the maximum benefit is based on your wages over the past 5 quarters (base year). If you haven't been working consistently or had periods of lower income, your benefit amount will be less than the maximum even if your recent salary was high.

•I've been at the same job for 2+ years making the same salary, so I think I should be good on that front.

•That's perfect then. With consistent high earnings you'll definitely qualify for near the maximum.

the washington esd system is so broken, half the time you can't even log into your account to file weekly claims. been dealing with this mess for months

•Have you tried using a different browser or clearing your cache? Sometimes the SecureAccess Washington (SAW) system has issues with certain browsers.

•tried everything, even called tech support but they're useless too

One thing to remember is that you have to meet the job search requirements to keep getting benefits. It's 3 job search activities per week unless you're on standby with your employer. Make sure you keep good records in your WorkSourceWA account.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs?

Liam Murphy
•Job applications, networking events, career fairs, interviews, contacting employers directly. There's a list on the WorkSourceWA website of approved activities.

•I hate the job search requirement, feels like busy work when you're trying to find quality positions

My friend got the max amount last year when she was laid off from her marketing job. She said the whole process took about 3 weeks from filing to getting her first payment, but that was because her claim went into adjudication for some reason.

•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that?

Amara Okafor
•Adjudication happens when Washington ESD needs to verify information about your claim - like why you left your job or if you're eligible. It can add several weeks to the process unfortunately.

•ugh adjudication is the worst, mine took 6 weeks and they never even explained what the issue was

I've been getting unemployment for 8 weeks now and get $847 per week. I was making about $65k before I got laid off. The calculation seems fair based on what I was earning.

•That's helpful to know! Gives me a better idea of what to expect.

•do you have to pay it back if you find a job quickly?

Tyrone Johnson
•No, you don't pay it back. You just stop filing weekly claims once you start working again.

Make sure you file as soon as possible after your last day of work. There's usually a one week waiting period before benefits start, and you can't get paid for weeks you don't file claims.

•Good point. My last day is next Friday so I'll file that weekend.

•You can actually file the same day as your last day of work, just make sure to put the correct last day of work on your application.

washington esd is a nightmare to deal with. they denied my claim twice for no good reason and i had to appeal both times. finally got approved after 3 months of fighting them

Amara Okafor
•What was their reason for denial? Most denials are for specific eligibility issues that can be addressed.

•they said i quit voluntarily but i was clearly laid off due to budget cuts. had to get my former employer to send documentation proving it was a layoff

•That's so frustrating! At least you stuck with it and got it resolved.

The key thing is to file online at esd.wa.gov and be completely honest about everything. Any inconsistencies can cause delays or denials. Also keep track of all your job search activities from day one.

Also worth mentioning that if you have any side income while collecting unemployment, you need to report it on your weekly claims. Even small amounts can affect your benefit amount for that week.

KylieRose
•What if I do some freelance work occasionally? Do I have to report that too?
0 coins
Keisha Thompson
•Yes, any income needs to be reported. They'll reduce your weekly benefit based on how much you earn, but you can still collect partial benefits in most cases.

i remember when the max was only like $790 a few years ago. at least they've increased it to keep up with cost of living somewhat

One more tip - if you're having trouble with your claim or need to speak to someone at Washington ESD, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it got me through to resolve an issue with my claim that had been pending for weeks.
