How long working to get unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about work requirements
I'm really confused about the work requirements for Washington ESD unemployment. I've been at my current job for about 8 months but before that I had a 6 month gap where I wasn't working. Does anyone know exactly how long you need to be working to qualify for UI benefits? I've heard different things from people - some say 6 months, others say a full year. I'm worried I might not qualify if I lose my job because of the gap I had last year. The Washington ESD website is confusing and I can't figure out if they look at just your most recent job or your entire work history.

It's not about how long you worked at one job - Washington ESD looks at your base period earnings. The base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. You need to have earned at least $3,850 in your base period and meet some other wage requirements.

•So it's based on quarters not months? That makes more sense. Do you know where I can find the exact wage requirements?

•Yes, it's quarterly. You can find all the wage requirements on the Washington ESD website under eligibility requirements. They also have a calculator to help estimate your benefits.

I was in a similar situation last year. Had a job for 7 months, got laid off, and still qualified for unemployment. The key is having enough wages in your base period quarters, not continuous employment.

•That's reassuring! Did you have any trouble with the application process?

•Not really, just had to provide all my employer information and wait for them to verify everything. Took about 2 weeks to get my first payment.

Actually, if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to get clarification on your specific situation, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped me when I couldn't get through on my own.

•Thanks! I've been trying to call them for days with no luck. How much does that service cost?

Anna Xian
•I don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it for me. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected.

•Never heard of that but might be worth checking out. The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible.

WASHINGTON ESD REQUIREMENTS ARE SO CONFUSING!!! I spent 3 hours on their website trying to figure this out when I got laid off. Why can't they just give you a simple yes or no answer about eligibility?

•I know right? The whole system is designed to make you give up before you even apply.

•It is confusing at first but once you understand the base period concept it makes more sense. The system has to be consistent for everyone.

Quick answer - you need wages in at least 2 quarters of your base period. The gap you mentioned probably won't matter as long as you earned enough before and after it.

•That's helpful, thanks! I think I should be okay then since I worked for about a year before the gap.

I qualified with only 4 months of work but I had a really high paying job so I hit the wage requirements quickly. It's all about the money you earned, not the time you worked.

•Exactly! Someone making $20/hour for 4 months might qualify while someone making minimum wage for 8 months might not.

•That makes sense. I guess I need to calculate my actual wages for those quarters.

Just apply and see what happens. Worst case they say no and you appeal if you think they're wrong. The Washington ESD system will tell you if you qualify or not based on your wage history.

•True, I guess I'm overthinking it. Better to just apply and find out for sure.

•Definitely apply if you think you might qualify. But make sure you have all your employment information ready - dates, wages, employer addresses, etc.

One more thing - if you do apply and run into issues with adjudication or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and couldn't get through to anyone until I used their service.

•How does that even work? Do they just call for you or something?

•They help you get through the phone system and connect with an actual agent. Way better than trying to navigate their automated system yourself.

been working for 2 years straight and still got denied because of some technicality with my last employer. the system is broken

•Did you appeal the decision? Sometimes initial denials get overturned on appeal if there was a mistake.

•yeah appealed and waiting to hear back. its been 3 months already

For what it's worth, I think the 8 months you worked plus whatever you had before the gap should be enough. The base period calculation usually works in your favor if you've been working consistently.

•Thanks for the encouragement! I feel a lot better about my chances now.

Don't forget you also have to be able and available for work and actively looking for a job. The work history is just one part of the requirements.

Destiny Bryant
•Good point. I assume I'd meet those requirements since I'd be looking for work if I lost my job.

•Yeah, most people do. Just make sure you understand the job search requirements - you have to apply for jobs and keep records.

The whole system is designed to deny people benefits. They make it so complicated that half the people who qualify don't even bother applying.

•I understand the frustration but the system does pay out billions in benefits every year. It's not perfect but it helps a lot of people.

Nadia Zaldivar
•Maybe so but it shouldn't be this hard to figure out if you qualify or not.

OP, based on what you described I think you'll probably qualify. 8 months of recent work plus whatever you had before should meet the wage requirements. Just make sure to file right away if you lose your job - there's a waiting period anyway.

•Will do! Thanks everyone for the help. I feel much more confident about understanding the system now.

My sister used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and said it was a lifesaver. She'd been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about her claim and got through in like 20 minutes with their help.

•Good to know it actually works! I'll definitely keep that in mind if I need to call them.

•Yeah she was really stressed about her claim being stuck and they helped her get it resolved quickly.

Bottom line is you won't know for sure until you apply. All this speculation is fine but Washington ESD will tell you definitively based on your actual wage records.

•You're absolutely right. I'll stop worrying about it and just apply if I need to.

I had a similar work history gap and still qualified. The key is having enough wages in your base period quarters, not continuous employment. Your 8 months should be fine.

•Yeah don't stress about it. The system is more flexible than people think when it comes to work gaps.

Final advice - gather all your employment records now while you still have access to everything. Makes the application process much smoother if you ever need to file.

•Great tip! I'll make sure to keep good records of my employment history.

Just remember if you do file and need help reaching Washington ESD for any reason, services like Claimyr exist to help with that frustration. The video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ shows exactly how they help people get through to agents.

•Probably worth bookmarking that for anyone dealing with Washington ESD. Their phone system is notoriously difficult.
