How long does unemployment determination take from Washington ESD?
I filed my unemployment claim 2 weeks ago and it's still showing 'pending determination' in my account. I know they have to review my separation from work but I'm getting nervous about how long this is taking. My last day was January 3rd and I applied right away. Does anyone know what the typical timeframe is for Washington ESD to make a determination? I've never been through this process before and bills are starting to pile up.

Washington ESD typically takes 3-6 weeks for initial determinations, but it can be longer if they need additional information from you or your employer. During busy periods it can stretch to 8 weeks or more. Have you checked if there are any pending issues in your account that need to be resolved?

•I don't see any pending issues listed. Just says 'determination pending' under my claim status. Should I be doing anything while I wait?

•Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending. If you're approved, you'll get backpay for those weeks. Also make sure you're doing your job search activities - you'll need to log those when your claim is processed.

Mine took 4 weeks exactly. Filed in November and heard back right before Christmas. The waiting is the worst part but they do eventually get to it.

•That's somewhat reassuring. Did they contact you or your employer during that time?

•They sent a questionnaire to my employer around week 3. I didn't hear anything until I got the determination letter.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It was way easier than trying to call myself.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already stressed about money.

•It's worth checking out their site for details, but honestly getting through to an agent to check on your determination status could save you weeks of wondering what's happening.

•I've heard of services like this but wasn't sure if they were legit. Good to know it actually worked for someone.

THE WAITING IS RIDICULOUS!!! I've been waiting 7 weeks now and still nothing. Called probably 200 times and can never get through. This system is broken.

•7 weeks?? That's terrifying. Have you tried any other ways to contact them?

•Tried everything. Online messages, calling different numbers, even went to the local office but they just tell you to call or apply online.

•After 6 weeks you should definitely try to reach an agent. Sometimes claims get stuck and need a manual review.

The determination process involves Washington ESD reviewing your separation reason, your earnings history, and sometimes conducting fact-finding interviews. If you were laid off or terminated without misconduct, it's usually straightforward. If you quit or were fired for cause, they need to investigate further to determine if you're eligible.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing. Should that be pretty straightforward then?

•Yes, layoffs due to lack of work are typically approved without much delay. The 2-4 week timeframe is more realistic for your situation.

•Unless the employer contests it or there's some other issue with your work history.

I work in HR and can tell you that employers have 10 days to respond to separation notices from Washington ESD. Sometimes the delay is on the employer's end, not the state's. If your employer doesn't respond timely, it can hold up your determination.

•Is there any way to know if they've contacted my employer yet?

•Not directly through your online account, but an agent could tell you where things stand in the process.

honestly the phone system is impossible. I probably called 50+ times a day for 2 weeks straight and never got through. finally used that claimyr thing someone mentioned and got connected to an agent same day. was able to check on my determination status and they told me it was just waiting for employer response.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about - just sitting here waiting with no information. Maybe I should look into that service.

•Yeah the not knowing is the worst part. at least when you talk to an agent you know what's actually happening with your claim.

It depends on your situation. Mine was approved in 2 weeks because it was a clear layoff. My friend who quit her job took 6 weeks because they had to do fact-finding interviews.

Sara Hellquiem
•What kind of fact-finding interviews?

Ellie Simpson
•They interview both you and the employer separately to get the full story about why you separated. They want to make sure you're eligible for benefits.

Pro tip: keep documenting everything while you wait. Save all your job search activities, keep records of your earnings, and don't stop filing your weekly claims. If there are any issues with your determination, having good records will help with appeals.

•Good point. I've been keeping track of my job applications but wasn't sure if I needed to yet.

•Better to have too much documentation than not enough. The job search requirement kicks in as soon as you're approved anyway.

Update: I used Claimyr again this week to check on a different issue and the agent was super helpful. They can see way more details about your claim than what shows up in your online account. Definitely worth it if you're stressed about the timeline.

•I think I'm going to try this. The uncertainty is killing me and I need to know if there are any problems with my claim.

•Thanks for the encouragement. It's hard not to worry when you're waiting for money you need for bills.

One thing to remember is that Washington ESD is still dealing with higher than normal claim volumes. Even though we're past the pandemic era, they're still processing more claims than they did pre-2020. The 3-6 week timeframe is pretty standard now.

Sara Hellquiem
•That makes sense. I guess I just need to be patient and keep filing my weekly claims.

•Exactly. And if you hit the 6 week mark with no word, definitely try to contact an agent to check on things.

I'm in week 5 of waiting and getting really anxious. Bills don't wait for Washington ESD to make up their minds.

•I feel you. The financial stress is real when you're waiting this long.

•Yeah and there's no way to know if something is wrong or if it's just taking forever for no reason.

From what I've seen, most straightforward layoff cases get approved in 2-4 weeks. Cases involving misconduct allegations or voluntary quits take longer because they require more investigation. Your situation sounds pretty standard so I wouldn't panic yet.

•That's what I'm hoping. It was definitely a layoff, not a quit or firing, so hopefully it's just a matter of time.

whatever you do dont stop filing your weekly claims while you wait!! i made that mistake and it messed up my whole claim

•i thought i didnt need to file until i was approved but you have to keep filing or you lose those weeks. had to appeal to get them back

The key factors affecting determination time are: separation reason complexity, employer response time, your work history clarity, and current processing volumes at Washington ESD. Simple layoffs with responsive employers typically process fastest.

•My employer was pretty good about paperwork when I was there, so hopefully they'll respond quickly to whatever Washington ESD sends them.

I've been waiting 8 weeks now and finally got approved yesterday! Don't give up hope, it does happen eventually. Got my backpay for all the weeks I filed while waiting.

•They said my employer took forever to respond and then they had to do additional verification. But I got paid for all the waiting weeks so it worked out.

The determination letter will tell you exactly why they approved or denied your claim. If approved, you'll start getting payments for all the weeks you filed. If denied, you have 30 days to appeal.

Sara Hellquiem
•Good to know about the appeal deadline. Hopefully I won't need that information but it's good to have.

Final thought - that claimyr service I mentioned earlier has a video demo that shows exactly how it works. Might be worth watching even if you don't use it, just so you know what options you have if the waiting gets too stressful.

Hope everything works out for you! The waiting is definitely the hardest part but most people do get approved if they were legitimately laid off. Keep us posted on how it goes!
