How long does it take to determine unemployment eligibility with Washington ESD?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear back about my eligibility determination. My claim status just shows 'pending' on the website and I haven't received any letters or emails explaining what's happening. I worked for the same company for 2 years before getting laid off, so I thought this would be straightforward. Does anyone know how long Washington ESD typically takes to determine eligibility? I'm starting to get worried about paying my bills while I wait.

The initial eligibility determination usually takes 10-14 business days for straightforward cases, but it can take longer if there are any issues that need review. Since you were laid off from a regular job, that's typically pretty clear cut. Have you checked if there are any pending issues in your account that might be holding things up?

•I logged in and don't see any pending issues listed. Just says my claim is being processed. Should I be doing anything else while I wait?

•Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while the initial determination is pending. You won't get paid until eligibility is confirmed, but you need to keep filing to maintain your claim dates.

Mine took 3 weeks last year and that was considered normal. The problem is you can't get through to anyone to ask about status updates - their phone lines are always busy.

•Three weeks?? That's so long when you're not getting any income. Did they eventually approve you without any issues?

•Yes, it was approved but the waiting was stressful. I kept thinking something was wrong but it was just their normal processing time.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I was stuck waiting. They have some kind of system that gets you connected to an actual person instead of waiting on hold forever. Check out their website at claimyr.com - they even have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Might be worth looking into if you need to check on your claim status.

•Is this legit? I've never heard of using a third party service to contact government agencies.

•Yeah it's real, they just help you get through the phone system faster. I was skeptical too but it actually worked when I needed to talk to someone about my claim.

•Interesting, I might try this if my claim gets stuck. The regular phone system is impossible.

Washington ESD is supposed to make eligibility determinations within 21 days by law, but they often take the full time even for simple cases. The good news is that if you're approved, you'll get backpay to when you first filed. Just keep filing your weekly claims and be patient.

•21 days seems like forever when you have rent due! But good to know about the backpay - I wasn't sure how that worked.

•The backpay is automatic once you're approved, as long as you've been filing your weekly claims. Don't skip any weeks or you'll lose those payments.

ugh this whole system is so slow and frustrating. I've been waiting 2 weeks for my determination and nothing. Meanwhile bills keep coming and I have no idea when I'll see any money

•I know it's frustrating but hang in there. Two weeks is still within normal processing time, especially if you filed recently.

The determination letter will come by mail when they make a decision. If you're approved, your first payment usually comes within a few days after that. If there are any issues, they'll send you information about what additional documentation they need.

•Should I be watching for the letter in regular mail or email? I don't want to miss anything important.

•Regular mail for the official determination letter. Email notifications are usually just reminders to file weekly claims.

•Make sure your address is correct in your account because if the letter gets returned, it can delay everything even more.

I work in HR and see this all the time - Washington ESD determinations for straightforward layoffs are usually approved but they take their sweet time processing everything. If your former employer doesn't contest the claim and you meet the work history requirements, you should be fine.

•That's reassuring to hear from someone who sees this professionally. My former employer said they wouldn't contest it since it was a company-wide layoff.

•Company-wide layoffs are the easiest cases for approval. Just be patient with the timing.

Same boat here, filed 12 days ago and still waiting. At least I'm not the only one dealing with this slow process!

•It's definitely frustrating but good to know we're not alone in this waiting game.

•The waiting is the worst part, especially when you don't know if something's wrong or if it's just normal processing time.

Pro tip: if you do need to contact them for any reason, try calling right when they open at 8am. That's when you have the best chance of getting through, though even then it's not guaranteed.

•Good to know! I haven't tried calling yet but might if I don't hear anything soon.

•8am is definitely the best time but you still might wait on hold for an hour or more. That Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier might be worth it to avoid the hassle.

I got my determination in exactly 14 business days last month. Approved with no issues. The wait felt forever but it came through. Just make sure you keep filing weekly claims during the wait!

•Yeah the weekly claims are crucial - don't skip those even while waiting for the initial determination.

For what it's worth, I tried that Claimyr service when my determination was taking forever and I needed to check on my claim status. It actually worked - got connected to someone at Washington ESD within minutes instead of sitting on hold for hours. Turned out my claim was fine, just taking normal processing time, but at least I got peace of mind.

•That's good to know it worked for you. If I don't hear anything by next week I might give it a try.

The system is just overwhelmed all the time. 10-21 days is the normal range but some people wait longer if there's any complication at all. Your case sounds straightforward though so you should be approved soon.

•I hope so! This waiting period is really stressful when you have bills to pay.

•Hang in there, the backpay will cover this waiting period once you're approved.
