How long does it take unemployment to start in Washington - filed 2 weeks ago
I filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago after getting laid off from my restaurant job. My claim status still shows 'pending' and I haven't received any payments yet. I'm getting really worried because I need to pay rent next week. The website doesn't give me any clear timeline - just says it's being processed. Has anyone else experienced this delay? How long does it usually take for unemployment benefits to actually start coming in after you file?

The typical timeline for Washington ESD to process a new claim is 2-4 weeks from the date you file. Since you filed 2 weeks ago, you're still within the normal processing window. Your claim might be going through identity verification or they might need additional documentation from your employer.

•Thanks for the info! Should I be doing anything while I wait or just sit tight?

•Keep filing your weekly claims even if you haven't been paid yet. You need to maintain your claim status while they process your initial application.

mine took 3 weeks but that was last year, not sure if things have changed

•Did you get back pay for those 3 weeks once it got approved?

•yeah they paid me for all the weeks I filed, even the ones during the waiting period

If you're worried about the delay, I'd recommend using Claimyr to get through to an actual Washington ESD agent. I was stuck in processing limbo for weeks until I used their service to finally reach someone who could tell me what was holding up my claim. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works.

•Is that service legit? I've never heard of it before.

•Yeah it's real - they basically call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to an agent. Saved me tons of time trying to get through the busy phone lines.

•How much does it cost though? I'm already strapped for cash waiting for unemployment.

TWO WEEKS?! That's nothing! I've been waiting SIX WEEKS for my claim to get approved. Washington ESD is a complete joke. They expect us to survive on air while they take their sweet time shuffling papers around.

•Six weeks?? That's insane! Have you tried calling them?

•I've called probably 50 times and either get a busy signal or sit on hold for 2 hours before getting disconnected. The system is broken.

Check your SecureAccess Washington account to see if there are any outstanding issues you need to resolve. Sometimes claims get stuck because they need you to verify your identity or provide additional documents.

•I just checked and it doesn't show any alerts or action items needed. Just says 'claim under review'.

•That's actually a good sign - means your paperwork is probably fine and they're just working through their backlog.

One thing to keep in mind - even after your claim is approved, there's usually a one-week waiting period before you receive your first payment. So if you filed 2 weeks ago and get approved this week, you might not see money for another week or two.

•Wait, so even after approval there's another delay? This is getting ridiculous.

•The waiting week is standard - it's like a one-week deductible. But once payments start, they're usually pretty consistent if you keep filing weekly.

Are you sure you qualified? Sometimes people think they're eligible but missed something in the requirements. Did you work enough hours in the base period?

•I worked full time for 8 months before getting laid off, so I should definitely qualify.

•Yeah that should be plenty. Probably just the normal processing delay then.

Seriously though, if you want to know exactly what's happening with your claim, Claimyr is the way to go. I used it last month and found out my claim was held up because they needed employment verification from a previous job. Would have taken me weeks to figure that out otherwise.

•Did you have to give them your personal info or SSN?

Kara Yoshida
•No, they just need your phone number to call you back when they get an agent on the line. Pretty simple process.

This whole system is designed to make us give up. They know if they delay long enough, some people will find jobs and stop claiming benefits. It's intentional.

•That's probably true but doesn't help OP get their money faster.

•Fair point. Just venting because I went through the same frustration.

Two weeks is actually pretty normal processing time. I know it feels like forever when you need the money, but Washington ESD has to verify everything before they start sending payments.

•I get that they need to verify stuff, but some communication would be nice. The website is useless.

Melina Haruko
•Totally agree - their communication is terrible. You basically have to call to get any real information.

Keep filing your weekly claims! I made the mistake of not filing for two weeks while waiting for approval and it messed up my whole claim timeline.

Elliott luviBorBatman
•Oh no! I've been filing every week like it told me to. Glad I didn't skip any.

•Good! That was a expensive lesson for me - had to go through a whole appeal process to get those weeks back.

The restaurant industry has been hit hard lately. Washington ESD might be dealing with higher than normal claim volumes which could explain the delays.

Elliott luviBorBatman
•That makes sense. A lot of restaurants in my area have been laying people off recently.

Saanvi Krishnaswami
•Yeah, higher volume usually means longer processing times unfortunately.

I used Claimyr when I was having issues getting through to Washington ESD and it was worth every penny. Got connected to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of spending hours trying to call myself.

•Did the agent actually have useful information or just tell you to wait?

•They were able to tell me exactly what documents they needed and expedited my claim review. Way better than the generic website info.

Make sure you're also looking for work and keeping track of your job search activities. Washington ESD requires that even while your claim is processing.

•Good reminder - I've been applying to jobs but wasn't sure if I needed to log them yet.

•Better to start logging now so you're ready when they ask for your job search records.

2-4 weeks is standard but it feels like forever when you're waiting. Just remember that once it's approved, you'll get paid for all the weeks you've been filing, including the waiting period.

•That's reassuring to know I won't lose those weeks. Thanks everyone for all the advice!
