How long does it take to get your unemployment money from Washington ESD?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm wondering how long it actually takes to see money in your account? I've heard everything from a few days to several weeks. My rent is due next week and I'm starting to panic. Does anyone know the typical timeline for getting your first payment? I did the online application and got a confirmation number but haven't heard anything since.

It depends on whether your claim gets flagged for adjudication or not. If it's straightforward with no issues, you should see your first payment within 2-3 weeks after filing. But if there are any red flags like job separation issues or wage discrepancies, it can take much longer.

•How do I know if my claim got flagged? My account just says 'claim processing' right now.

•Check your account regularly. If there are any issues requiring adjudication, you'll usually see a notice or alert in your eServices account asking for additional information.

took me 4 weeks to get my first check last year, but that was because they had to verify my work history with my previous employer

•Did you have to do anything special or just wait it out?

•just waited, tried calling a few times but never got through to anyone

The standard timeline is 2-3 weeks for the first payment if everything goes smoothly. However, Washington ESD has been dealing with high volumes lately, so some claims are taking longer than usual. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial decision - you won't get paid for weeks you don't file.

•Wait, you have to file weekly claims before your first payment is approved? I thought you only started filing after approval.

•No, you need to file weekly claims starting the week after you apply. Those weeks are what you'll get paid for once your claim is approved. If you don't file them, you lose those weeks forever.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual person. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made a huge difference when I was stuck in limbo for weeks.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•Yeah it's real. They basically call Washington ESD repeatedly until they get through, then conference you in. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Might have to try it if my claim doesn't move forward soon.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I've been waiting 6 weeks for my first payment and every time I call they say 'still processing' with no timeline. Meanwhile my bills are piling up and I can't get a straight answer from anyone at Washington ESD.

•I feel you, the communication is terrible. Have you tried reaching out to your state representative's office? Sometimes they can help push things along.

•I didn't know that was an option. Will definitely try that next week if nothing changes.

From my experience, if your claim is straightforward it's usually 2-3 weeks. But COVID really messed up their systems and they're still catching up. The key is making sure you file those weekly claims religiously even while waiting.

•What counts as a straightforward claim? I was laid off due to budget cuts, no performance issues or anything like that.

Aisha Abdullah
•That should be straightforward. Layoffs due to budget cuts are pretty clear-cut for unemployment eligibility.

Mine took exactly 18 days from filing to first payment. I kept a spreadsheet tracking everything because I was so anxious about the timing.

•That's actually really smart. Did you have any issues or was it smooth sailing?

•Smooth sailing, but I made sure to answer every question on the application super carefully and double-checked all my employment dates.

just a heads up that the first payment is usually smaller than you expect because it doesn't include the waiting week. took me by surprise when i got mine

•What's a waiting week?

Sean O'Donnell
•Washington has a one-week waiting period for unemployment benefits. So you don't get paid for your first eligible week. It's just how the system works.

Check if you qualify for any emergency assistance programs while you wait. Some local food banks and utility companies have programs for people waiting on unemployment benefits.

•That's a good idea. I'll look into that today.

I've been using Claimyr to stay on top of my claim status. Worth every penny when you're stressed about money and can't get through to Washington ESD on your own. The peace of mind is huge.

•How much does something like that cost?

•They focus more on the value than pricing on their site. For me it was worth it just to not spend hours on hold.

Pro tip: if you're doing direct deposit, make sure your bank info is 100% correct. A friend of mine had to wait an extra 2 weeks because one digit was wrong in his routing number.

•Oh no, now I'm paranoid. How do I double-check that?

•Log into your eServices account and verify the banking information matches exactly what's on your checks or bank statements.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember constantly refreshing my bank account and checking my mail every day. Try to stay busy and remember that it will eventually come through.

If you're really desperate, some credit unions offer small emergency loans for people waiting on unemployment. Might be worth checking into if you have bills due soon.

•That's actually really helpful advice. I didn't know credit unions did that.

Washington ESD payments usually come on Tuesdays or Wednesdays if you're on direct deposit. Just something to keep in mind when you're watching for it.

•Good to know! I'll stop checking my account obsessively on the weekends then.

Whatever you do, don't stop filing your weekly claims while you wait. I made that mistake thinking I'd start after approval and lost 3 weeks of benefits.

•Noted. I've been filing every week since I applied. Glad I didn't wait.

The system is definitely slow but it does work eventually. Hang in there and keep filing those weekly claims. Your first payment will include all the back weeks you're owed.

One more plug for Claimyr - when I was in your situation, being able to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD made all the difference. They could tell me exactly where my claim stood instead of just guessing from the online portal.

•I think I'm going to try that. This waiting without knowing anything is driving me crazy.

Just want to add that everyone's timeline is different. I've seen people get paid in 10 days and others wait 2 months. Try not to compare your situation to others too much.

•Good reminder. I keep seeing people online saying they got paid super fast and it makes me worry something's wrong with mine.

Make sure you're checking your eServices account regularly for any notices or requests for additional information. Sometimes claims get delayed because people miss important messages.

•I check it every day but so far just shows 'processing'. No requests for additional info yet.

The good news is that once your first payment comes through, the weekly payments after that are usually pretty consistent and on time. It's just that initial wait that's brutal.

Chloe Martin
•That's reassuring. I can handle regular payments, it's just this uncertainty that's killing me.
