How long does it take to get a paper check from Washington ESD unemployment?
I requested a paper check instead of direct deposit for my unemployment benefits and it's been over a week since my weekly claim was processed. My account shows 'paid' status but I haven't received anything in the mail yet. Does anyone know how long Washington ESD typically takes to mail paper checks? I'm starting to worry it got lost or something.

Usually takes about 7-10 business days from the time your claim shows 'paid' status. Mail can be slow sometimes, especially if there's a holiday or weekend in between.

•It's been exactly 8 business days so maybe I should wait a few more days before panicking. Thanks for the info!

•Yeah definitely wait at least 10 business days before contacting them. The checks come from a processing center and sometimes take longer during busy periods.

Paper checks from Washington ESD typically take 7-10 business days to arrive after your claim is processed and shows 'paid' status. If it's been longer than 10 business days, you should contact Washington ESD to report it as potentially lost. They can put a stop payment on the original check and issue a replacement.

•Good to know about the stop payment option. How do I actually reach someone at Washington ESD though? Every time I call I get disconnected or put on hold forever.

•The phone system is absolutely terrible. I spent hours trying to get through last month when I had an issue with my check.

I had this exact same problem last month! My check was delayed for almost 3 weeks. Turns out there was an issue with the mailing address in my profile. Have you double-checked that your address is correct in your Washington ESD account?

•I checked and the address looks right to me. Did you have to do anything special to fix the address issue?

•I had to call and speak to someone to get it corrected. But honestly, after all that hassle I switched to direct deposit. Much faster and more reliable.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to unemployment offices. They basically call for you and connect you when an agent picks up. Found it at claimyr.com and there's a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of calling and getting disconnected.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Is it legitimate? Seems too good to be true.

•Yeah it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too but it actually worked. They don't ask for any personal info about your claim, just help you get connected to talk to a real person.

•I might try this too. I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about a different issue and can never get through.

Why didn't you just set up direct deposit in the first place? Paper checks are so outdated and unreliable. You can change it in your account settings for future payments.

•I don't have a bank account right now, that's why I need the paper check. Long story but I'm working on getting banking sorted out.

•Oh sorry, didn't realize. That makes sense then. Hope you get your check soon!

Make sure you're checking your mailbox every day. Sometimes the postal service delivers at different times and checks can get mixed in with regular mail. Also check with roommates or family if anyone else might have grabbed it by mistake.

•Good point, I'll make sure to check more carefully. I live alone but maybe it got delivered to the wrong unit in my building.

The whole paper check system is ridiculous. I waited 2 weeks for mine and when it finally came, the amount was wrong! Had to go through the whole appeal process. Washington ESD really needs to get their act together.

•Oh no, now I'm worried about the amount being wrong too. How did you catch that error?

•I always write down what my payment should be based on my weekly benefit amount, then compare it to the check when it arrives. Definitely double-check yours!

•That's actually really good advice. Keep track of your expected payments so you can spot discrepancies quickly.

If it helps, you can also track the status of your payment in your Washington ESD account. It should show when the check was issued and the check number. That might give you a better idea of timing.

•I see where it shows 'paid' but I don't see a check number anywhere. Is that in a different section?

•Check under your payment history or transaction details. Sometimes it takes a day or two for the check number to show up after the status changes to paid.

honestly the whole unemployment system is such a mess. between the website crashing all the time and payments being delayed, it's like they don't want to help people. sorry you're dealing with this stress on top of everything else

•Thanks, it really is stressful when you're relying on this money for basic expenses. Just hoping it shows up soon.

Update us when you get your check! I'm curious to see if it falls within that 7-10 day window they mentioned. It would help other people in similar situations to know the actual timeline.

•Will do! I'll post an update once it arrives, whenever that is.

I had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Used it last week to get through about my job search requirements question. Took about 45 minutes but I actually got to talk to a real person at Washington ESD instead of sitting on hold for hours.

•That's good to know it actually works. I might use it if my check doesn't show up in the next few days and I need to report it missing.

•Yeah definitely worth trying if you need to reach them. Way less frustrating than the regular phone system.

Check with your post office too! Sometimes mail gets held up there, especially if there's been any issues with delivery in your area. They can tell you if there's a delay.

Alina Rosenthal
•Good idea, I didn't think of that. There has been some construction on my street lately that might be affecting deliveries.

Just wanted to add that when I used Claimyr to reach Washington ESD, the agent was able to look up exactly when my payment was mailed and confirm my address was correct. Really helped put my mind at ease about the whole situation.

•That sounds really helpful to get that confirmation. I think I'll definitely try it if I don't get my check by Friday.

Same boat here! Waiting on a paper check for 9 days now. Reading this thread makes me feel a bit better that it's normal for it to take this long. Fingers crossed we both get ours soon.

•Will do! This waiting game is nerve-wracking when you need the money.

One more thing - make sure your mailbox isn't full or blocked. I've seen checks get returned to sender because the mailbox was overstuffed or the mail carrier couldn't access it properly.

•My mailbox should be fine but I'll double-check that too. Thanks for thinking of everything!

The 10 business day thing seems pretty accurate from what I've seen. My mom had to wait about that long for her check last year. Just gotta be patient with the mail system unfortunately.

•Yeah patience is not my strong suit when I'm worried about paying rent, but I guess that's all I can do right now.

If your check doesn't arrive by day 12-14, definitely contact Washington ESD to start the process for a replacement check. Don't wait too long because there are deadlines for reporting lost payments.

•Good to know there's a deadline for reporting it. I'll mark my calendar to call them if it doesn't show up by next Wednesday.

Just to close the loop on timing - in my experience it's usually closer to the 7-8 day mark unless there's a holiday or mail issue. The 10 days is more of a worst-case scenario timeframe.

Alina Rosenthal
•That's reassuring since I'm right at the 8 day mark now. Hopefully it shows up in the next day or two!
