Washington ESD - how to get unemployment check after filing claim?
I filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and everything got approved, but I still haven't received any unemployment check yet. I've been doing my weekly claims on time every Sunday but my SecureAccess Washington account just shows 'paid' status with no actual money hitting my bank account. I set up direct deposit when I first applied so I thought it would be automatic. Am I missing something? How long does it usually take to get your first unemployment check after Washington ESD approves your claim?

The first unemployment payment usually takes 2-3 weeks after your claim gets approved. Washington ESD has to process your weekly claim submissions and verify everything before releasing funds. Check your payment history in your online account to see if there are any pending issues.

•I checked and it just says 'paid' for last week but no dollar amount or date. Should I be worried?

•No that's normal, sometimes the payment details take a day or two to update with the actual amount and deposit date.

Make sure you're filing your weekly claims correctly! You have to report any work you did that week and answer all the questions honestly. If you mess up even one answer Washington ESD will hold your payment.

•I've been super careful with those weekly questions. I haven't worked at all so I always put zero hours and zero earnings.

•That's good. Also make sure you're actively looking for work and keeping a job search log, Washington ESD requires 3 job contacts per week minimum.

•Wait, I need to keep a log? Nobody told me that when I filed!

I had the same issue last month and it took forever to get through to someone at Washington ESD to find out what was wrong. Their phone lines are always busy and when you finally get through you get disconnected half the time. I ended up using this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke waiting for my unemployment money.

•It's worth it when you need to actually talk to someone. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get hung up on.

•I've heard of that service too, my friend used it when her claim got stuck in adjudication.

The timing depends on when you filed your weekly claim and when Washington ESD processes payments. They typically process payments on Tuesday/Wednesday for claims filed the previous week. Direct deposit usually hits accounts within 1-2 business days after processing.

•So if I filed my weekly claim on Sunday, I should see money by Friday?

•Potentially yes, but the first payment often takes longer because they're still verifying your eligibility and setting up your benefit year.

•Did you check if there are any unresolved issues in your account? Sometimes there's a flag that isn't obvious.

•Try calling the customer service line early in the morning around 8 AM, that's when you have the best chance of getting through.

Just want to add that you should double-check your banking info in your Washington ESD account. I had the wrong routing number and it took me weeks to figure out why my payments weren't coming through.

•Good point, let me verify that. I think I entered it correctly but better safe than sorry.

•Yeah definitely worth checking. The bank info section is under your profile settings.

Same boat here, approved claim but no money yet. Starting to panic about rent next week.

•Hang in there, once the payments start they're usually pretty consistent. The first one is always the hardest wait.

•You might want to contact your landlord and explain the situation. Most are understanding about unemployment delays.

For anyone still waiting, make sure you understand the job search requirements. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job contacts each week and keep detailed records. You can use WorkSourceWA to help track your job search activities. If you're not meeting these requirements, it could delay your payments.

•Where exactly do I report these job contacts? I've been applying to jobs but didn't know I needed to log them anywhere specific.

Zainab Ahmed
•You don't submit them with your weekly claim, but you need to keep your own detailed log in case Washington ESD audits your job search. Include company names, dates, positions applied for, and method of contact.

•I keep mine in a simple spreadsheet. Date, company, job title, how I applied. Takes 2 minutes each time.

Pro tip: set up text alerts in your Washington ESD account so you get notified when payments are processed. Saves you from constantly checking your account.

Dmitry Smirnov
•How do you set that up? I don't see text alerts anywhere in my account.

•Should be under notification settings or account preferences. Might be called 'payment notifications' or something similar.

I remember when I first filed, I was so confused about the waiting week thing. Washington ESD doesn't pay for your first week of unemployment - it's unpaid but you still have to file the weekly claim.

Dmitry Smirnov
•Wait what? Nobody mentioned a waiting week to me. So I won't get paid for my first week at all?
0 coins
Javier Cruz
•That's right, it's like a one-week deductible. You'll get paid starting from your second week of unemployment.

•That seems really unfair when people are already struggling financially.

If you're really stuck and can't figure out what's wrong, definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I used it when I had an issue with my claim status and it saved me so much time and frustration trying to reach Washington ESD directly.

•Did they actually help resolve your issue or just get you connected to someone?

•They got me connected to an actual Washington ESD representative who was able to look at my account and tell me exactly what was holding up my payments. Turned out there was a simple verification issue.

Check your spam folder too! Sometimes the payment notifications from Washington ESD end up there and you miss important updates about your claim.

•Good call, I'll check that right now.

•Also add washington.gov email addresses to your safe sender list so they don't get filtered out.

The whole system is just broken honestly. I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and it's always something. First it was identity verification, then job search issues, now they're saying I have an overpayment from last year that I need to pay back before I can get any new benefits.

Omar Hassan
•That sounds like a nightmare. Did you try appealing the overpayment notice?
0 coins
Freya Christensen
•Yeah I'm working on that but the whole appeals process is another mess entirely.
0 coins
Zainab Ahmed
•For overpayment issues, definitely file an appeal if you think it's wrong. You have 30 days from the notice date to request a hearing.

Update us when you get your first payment! I'm curious how long it ends up taking from approval to actual money in the bank.

One more thing to check - make sure your Social Security number and identity verification are all complete in your Washington ESD account. Any incomplete verification can hold up payments even if your claim shows as approved.

Dmitry Smirnov
•How do I check if my identity verification is complete? I uploaded my documents when I first applied.

NeonNebula
•Look for a section called 'Identity Verification' or 'Document Upload' in your account. It should show the status of each document you submitted.

Anastasia Kozlov
•Mine took 2 weeks just for the identity verification to go through, even though I submitted everything correctly the first time.
