How long does it take to claim unemployment benefits through Washington ESD?
I just got laid off last Friday and I'm trying to figure out the timeline for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. I've never done this before and I'm honestly confused about how long the whole process takes from start to finish. Like, how long does it take to actually file the initial claim online? And then how long before I get my first payment? I keep seeing different timeframes online and I'm getting anxious because I have rent due in two weeks. Can someone walk me through what to expect?

Filing the initial claim online usually takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your documents ready. You'll need your SSN, employment history for the last 18 months, and your reason for separation. The actual application process isn't too complicated but make sure you have accurate dates and employer information.

•Thanks! What documents specifically do I need? I have my last paystub but what else?

•You'll need employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and gross wages for each job in the last 18 months. If you were fired or quit, you'll need specific details about that too.

The filing part is quick but getting your first payment takes way longer. After you file, there's usually a one-week waiting period, then you have to file weekly claims. If everything goes smooth, you might see money in 2-3 weeks. But if they flag your claim for adjudication, it can take months.

•What causes a claim to get flagged for adjudication? I'm worried mine might get delayed.

•Lots of things - if you quit instead of being laid off, if there's any question about why you left, if your employer contests it, or sometimes just random verification checks.

I had to deal with this nightmare last year. Filed my claim in January and didn't get my first payment until March because of adjudication issues. The worst part was trying to get through to Washington ESD to find out what was happening. I must have called hundreds of times and kept getting busy signals or hung up on. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have this demo video (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ) that shows how it works - basically they handle the calling for you and get you connected to an ESD agent.

•That sounds helpful! How much does something like that cost?

•I don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it to finally talk to someone and get my claim moving. The stress of not knowing what was wrong was killing me.

•Is that even legit? Seems like you should be able to call Washington ESD directly.

•You can try calling directly but good luck getting through. I tried for weeks before using Claimyr. They're legit - they just handle the dialing and waiting for you.

Here's the realistic timeline: File claim online (30-60 minutes), wait for determination letter (1-2 weeks), serve waiting week, file first weekly claim, then IF no issues it's usually 2-3 business days for payment to hit your account. So best case scenario you're looking at about 3 weeks from filing to first payment.

•That's actually not as bad as I thought. What's the weekly claim filing process like?

•Weekly claims are pretty simple - you answer questions about job search activities, any work you did, and certify you're able and available for work. Takes maybe 10 minutes each week.

UGH the whole system is so slow!! I filed 6 weeks ago and I'm STILL waiting for my first payment. My claim has been 'under review' forever and no one at Washington ESD will tell me what's wrong. I've called probably 200 times and either get busy signal or they hang up after 2 hours on hold. This is ridiculous!

•Have you tried calling first thing in the morning? I usually have better luck getting through around 8 AM.

•I've tried every time of day, trust me. The system is broken.

•Try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned above. My cousin used it last month and finally got through to sort out her claim.

Filed mine 3 weeks ago, got approved, and received my first payment yesterday. The key is making sure you file your weekly claims on time and answer all the questions accurately. Don't overthink it.

•That gives me hope! Did you have to do job search activities right away?

Connor O'Neill
•Yes, you need to do job search activities starting the first week unless you're on standby with your employer. Keep track of everything - company names, dates, how you applied.

The filing process itself is straightforward but Washington ESD's website can be slow and glitchy, especially during peak times. I'd recommend filing early in the morning or late at night when there's less traffic. Also, make sure you have a good internet connection because if it times out you might have to start over.

•Good tip about the website timing. I was planning to do it this evening but maybe I should wait until early morning.

•Definitely try early morning. I filed mine at 7 AM on a Tuesday and it went through without any problems.

been there. worst part is the waiting and not knowing whats happening with your claim. filed mine in february took 5 weeks to get first payment because they had to verify my employment history

•5 weeks?? How did you survive financially during that time?

•had to borrow money from family and use credit cards. not fun but eventually got backpay for all the weeks

One thing people don't mention is you need to register with WorkSource Washington too. It's required for job search activities. You can do it online but it's another step in the process that adds time.

•When do I need to register with WorkSource? Right away or can I wait?
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•You should register within the first week or two. They'll tell you the exact timeline when you file your claim. Don't wait too long or it could delay your payments.

The timeline really depends on your situation. Simple layoff with clear documentation? Pretty quick. Quit your job or got fired for cause? Much longer because they have to investigate. I've seen people get paid in 2 weeks and others wait 3 months.

•I was definitely laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that helps speed things up.

Paolo Ricci
•That should help. Make sure you emphasize it was a layoff due to lack of work when you file. Be very clear about the reason.

Pro tip: create your online account before you actually need to file a claim. That way when you do get laid off, you can file immediately instead of having to set up all the account stuff first. Wish I'd known that when I got laid off.

•Too late for me now but good advice for others reading this!

•Actually you can still do that. Creating the account and filing the claim are separate steps.

My experience was filing took about an hour because I had to gather all my employment info first. Then I got a determination letter 10 days later saying I was approved. Filed my first weekly claim the following Sunday and got paid that Wednesday. So from filing to first payment was about 3 weeks total.

Giovanni Mancini
•That timeline sounds manageable. Did you have any issues with the job search requirements?
0 coins
CosmicCommander
•Not really, you just need to apply for jobs and keep records. They don't check unless there's a reason to audit your claim.

Whatever you do, don't wait to file thinking you might find a job quickly. File as soon as you're eligible because there's a waiting period anyway. You can always stop claiming if you find work, but you can't get backpay for weeks you didn't file.

Giovanni Mancini
•Good point. I was thinking about waiting a week to see if any of my applications pan out, but I should probably just file now.
0 coins
Natasha Volkova
•Exactly. File now, keep job searching, and if you find something you just stop filing weekly claims. Don't leave money on the table.

The system has gotten better since COVID but it's still not great. Expect delays and have a backup plan financially. Also keep copies of everything - your application, weekly claims, any correspondence from Washington ESD. You might need it later.

Giovanni Mancini
•Thanks for the heads up about keeping records. I'll make sure to screenshot everything.

•Smart. Also keep a notebook with dates and times of any phone calls or interactions with ESD. It helps if there are problems later.

I used Claimyr twice last year when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD. First time was to check on my claim status, second time was when I had questions about my job search log. Both times they got me connected to an agent within a few hours instead of me spending days trying to call. Definitely worth it when you're stuck and need answers.

•Good to know it works for different types of issues. I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems.

•Same here - used them when my weekly claim got stuck and I couldn't figure out why. Agent was able to fix it on the spot once I actually got through to talk to someone.

Just remember the first week is a waiting week so you won't get paid for that even if everything goes perfectly. It's basically an unpaid week that counts toward your benefit year but you don't receive money for it. Plan accordingly.

Giovanni Mancini
•Wait, so even if I file this week I won't get paid for this week at all?
0 coins
Isabella Ferreira
•Right, the first week you're eligible is a waiting week. You'll get paid starting from the second week if your claim is approved.

The whole process would be so much easier if Washington ESD just had better phone support. Half the stress comes from not being able to talk to anyone when you have questions or problems. At least the online system works most of the time now.

•Agreed. The website is decent but when something goes wrong you're basically stuck unless you can get through on the phone.

•Hopefully I won't need to call but it's good to know there are options like that Claimyr service if I get stuck.
