How long does it take to be approved for unemployment in Washington?

I just submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website last Tuesday and I'm wondering what the typical timeline is for approval? My last day of work was January 15th after my position was eliminated due to company restructuring. I made sure to include all my employment history from the past 18 months and answered all the questions about why I'm unemployed. The confirmation said my claim was received but I haven't heard anything back yet. Should I be worried that it's taking this long? I really need to know when I can expect my first payment because I have rent due next week.

The initial processing time for Washington ESD claims can vary quite a bit depending on your specific situation. For straightforward claims with no complications, you're typically looking at 2-3 weeks from the date you filed. However, if there are any issues that require adjudication - like questions about your separation from employment or eligibility - it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer.

Thanks for the info! What kinds of things typically trigger adjudication? I'm hoping mine is straightforward since it was a clear layoff.

Common triggers include voluntary quit vs involuntary separation disputes, attendance issues, or if your employer contests the claim. Since yours was a layoff due to restructuring, you should be in good shape as long as you documented that correctly.

been waiting 3 weeks now and still nothing, this is ridiculous. i filed the day after i got let go and my claim is still showing 'pending' status. how are we supposed to pay bills while they take forever to process these things??

I totally understand the frustration. The waiting period is really stressful when you're counting on that income. Have you tried calling Washington ESD to check on your claim status? Sometimes there are issues that need to be resolved that aren't obvious from the online portal.

tried calling like 50 times, either busy signal or they hang up after being on hold for an hour. their phone system is terrible

I had the same problem with getting through to Washington ESD by phone. I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a system that handles the calling and waiting for you - you can see how it works in their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Might be worth checking out claimyr.com if you're having trouble reaching them.

Mine took exactly 17 days from filing to first payment. I was laid off in December and filed immediately. The key thing is to make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial approval - those claims can be processed retroactively once your main claim is approved.

Oh good point about the weekly claims! I wasn't sure if I should be doing those while waiting. I'll make sure to keep filing them.

Yes definitely keep filing weekly! I made that mistake and had to go back and file all the missed weeks later which was a hassle.

The Washington ESD website says 3-4 weeks for most claims but in my experience it's usually closer to 2-3 weeks unless there are complications. Make sure you're checking your SecureAccess Washington account regularly for any messages or requests for additional information.

I've been checking daily and haven't seen any messages yet. Hopefully that's a good sign that everything is processing normally.

No messages is generally a good sign. They'll definitely contact you if they need anything additional or if there are any issues with your claim.

This whole system is broken IMO. I've been waiting 5 weeks now and they keep saying my claim is 'under review' with no explanation of what they're reviewing or how much longer it will take. Meanwhile I'm burning through my savings just to survive.

5 weeks is definitely longer than normal. That suggests there might be an adjudication issue that needs to be resolved. Have you received any correspondence from Washington ESD about what specifically is being reviewed?

Norman Fraser

•

Nope, nothing. Just the generic 'under review' status. I've tried calling but can never get through to an actual person.

That's exactly the situation where Claimyr helped me out. When you're stuck in limbo like that, you really need to talk to someone who can look at your specific case and tell you what's holding things up. The service I mentioned earlier can get you connected to an agent who can actually explain what's happening with your claim.

Just want to add that if you were terminated for any reason other than lack of work, it might take longer. Washington ESD has to verify the circumstances of your separation to determine if you're eligible. Since you mentioned restructuring/layoff, you should be fine though.

Thanks for clarifying that. It was definitely a layoff due to company downsizing, so hopefully that keeps things simple.

i got approved in like 10 days but that was back in november, maybe they're processing faster now? or maybe slower with more people filing after the holidays, who knows

0 coins

I think it really depends on the individual case. Some go through quickly, others take weeks. The key is just being patient and making sure you've provided all the info they need.

Pro tip: create an account on WorkSourceWA.com if you haven't already. You'll need it for the job search requirements anyway, and it shows Washington ESD that you're actively looking for work which can help with processing.

0 coins

Good call! I haven't set that up yet. Do I need to start logging job searches right away or only after my claim is approved?

•

You should start logging them right away. The job search requirement kicks in immediately, even while your claim is pending. You need to be able to document your work search activities for each week you claim benefits.

Exactly right. You need to be actively seeking work and able to document at least 3 job search activities per week. This includes things like applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, etc.

Washington ESD has gotten better about processing times compared to the pandemic years, but it's still not great. The automated system handles the straightforward cases pretty efficiently, but anything that requires human review takes much longer.

Yeah I remember during COVID it was taking like 2-3 months for some people. At least we're not dealing with that level of backlog anymore.

0 coins

Make sure you're not missing any deadlines while waiting for approval. You still need to file your weekly claims, and if they request any additional documentation, you usually only have 10 days to respond.

0 coins

I'll keep an eye out for any requests. So far I haven't gotten any but I'll make sure to respond quickly if I do.

For what it's worth, I just got approved last Friday and it took exactly 16 days from when I filed. First payment showed up in my account on Monday. The waiting is stressful but most people do get approved eventually if they're eligible.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear! I'm at day 8 now so hopefully I'll hear something soon. Thanks for sharing your timeline.

0 coins

Similar timeline for me - about 2.5 weeks total. The first payment is usually the biggest relief because then you know everything is working correctly.

0 coins

One thing to watch out for is if Washington ESD needs to verify your wages with your previous employer. Sometimes employers are slow to respond to these requests which can delay your claim approval. Not much you can do about it except wait.

0 coins

Is there any way to check if that's happening with my claim? I haven't heard anything from my former employer about it.

0 coins

It usually happens behind the scenes. If there's a delay in wage verification, Washington ESD might send you a letter asking for pay stubs or other documentation to verify your earnings.

Honestly the best thing you can do is just try to be patient and keep filing your weekly claims. I know it's easier said than done when you're worried about money, but most claims do get approved within 3-4 weeks max.

0 coins

You're right, I need to try to be more patient. It's just nerve-wracking when you're counting on that income. Thanks for the reality check.

If you're really concerned about the timeline, you could try reaching out to your state representative's office. They sometimes have liaisons who can check on unemployment claims that seem to be taking longer than usual.

That's actually a great suggestion that not many people know about. Legislative offices can sometimes get answers when regular channels aren't working.

True, though I'd probably try the Claimyr service first since it's specifically designed for this type of issue. But having a backup plan with your representative's office is smart too.

Just wanted to update everyone - I filed my claim 3 weeks ago and just got my approval notice yesterday! First payment should be coming this week. Sometimes it really does just take time and there's nothing wrong with your claim.

0 coins

Congrats! That gives me hope. I'm still waiting but it's good to hear success stories.

That's awesome! The relief when you finally see that approval is incredible. Glad it worked out for you.
