How long does it take to get unemployment after filing with Washington ESD?
I submitted my unemployment application through the Washington ESD website about a week ago and I'm wondering what the typical timeline is for getting my first payment. My claim shows as 'pending' but there's no clear indication of how much longer this will take. I'm getting anxious because I have rent due next week and I was counting on this money. Does anyone know the usual processing time for new claims? I haven't received any requests for additional information or anything like that.

The standard processing time for Washington ESD is typically 2-3 weeks from when you file your initial claim, assuming there are no issues that require adjudication. Since you filed a week ago, you're probably looking at another 1-2 weeks before your first payment if everything goes smoothly. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while it's still pending - that's crucial.

•Thanks for the info! I did file my first weekly claim yesterday. Should I keep doing that every week even though my main claim is still pending?

•Yes, absolutely keep filing weekly claims. If you miss filing weekly claims, you won't get paid for those weeks even after your claim is approved. It's one of the most common mistakes people make.

It really depends on your situation though. If there are any issues with your claim like employment verification or if you quit your job instead of being laid off, it could take much longer because it goes into adjudication. That can add weeks or even months to the process.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that's straightforward. How would I know if my claim went into adjudication?

•You'd typically see a status change in your account or get a letter/message about needing additional information. If it's been a week with no requests for info, that's probably a good sign.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months now and honestly, getting through to them by phone when you have questions is nearly impossible. I was calling 200+ times a day trying to reach someone about my claim status. Finally discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to ESD agents. There's even a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved my sanity honestly.

•How does that work exactly? Is it like a callback service or something?

•Yeah, basically they handle all the redialing and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than spending your whole day hitting redial.

•That sounds too good to be true. What's the catch?

Mine took exactly 17 days from filing to first payment, but that was last year. I think they've gotten a bit faster since the pandemic backlog cleared up. The key is making sure you file your weekly claims on time and respond to any requests for information immediately.

•17 days isn't too bad. Did you have to do anything special or just wait it out?

•Just waited and made sure to file weekly claims. I also set up direct deposit right away which probably helped speed up the payment process.

ugh the waiting is the worst part! I'm in the same boat - filed 10 days ago and still nothing. My savings are running out and I'm stressed about bills. Why does this process take so long?? Other states seem to be faster.

•I know it's frustrating, but Washington ESD has to verify employment history and wages with employers, which takes time. The system is designed to prevent fraud, which unfortunately means longer wait times for everyone.

•I guess that makes sense but it doesn't make paying rent any easier! At least I know I'm not the only one dealing with this.

Just wanted to add - if you need money immediately, you might want to look into local food banks or emergency assistance programs while you wait for unemployment to come through. Many churches and community organizations can help with utility bills and groceries.

•That's actually really helpful advice, thank you. I hadn't thought about community resources.

•211 is a good resource to call - they can connect you with local assistance programs in your area.

Back to the Claimyr thing - I was skeptical too but it actually worked. No catch, just saves you from the endless busy signals. Used it twice now when I needed to talk to someone about my weekly claim issues.

•How much does it cost though? I'm already broke waiting for unemployment.

•It's worth it when you consider how much time you save not calling all day. Plus getting your claim resolved faster means you get paid sooner.

The 2-3 week timeline is accurate for most people. I work at a nonprofit that helps people with benefits applications and that's what we tell clients to expect. Just make sure you have all your documentation ready in case they ask for verification.

•What kind of documentation should I have ready?

•Pay stubs, termination letter if you have one, any severance documentation, and your Social Security card. Having these ready speeds things up if they request them.

Just got my first payment today after filing 3 weeks ago! Hang in there everyone, it does eventually come through. The waiting is awful but try to stay patient.

•Congrats! That gives me hope. Was there any warning it was coming or did it just show up?

•It just appeared in my account one morning. Got a text notification from my bank that there was a deposit.

Make sure you're checking your ESD account regularly for messages too. Sometimes they send requests for information through the messaging system and if you miss it, your claim gets delayed even more.

Maya Jackson
•Good point, I'll make sure to check that daily. Thanks for the reminder!

•Yeah, I almost missed an important message once because I wasn't checking regularly. Could have cost me weeks of benefits.

The system is so broken. Been waiting 5 weeks now and still nothing. Washington ESD is completely overwhelmed and understaffed. This is people's livelihood we're talking about!

•Have you tried calling them? That's where Claimyr really helped me - getting through to someone who could explain what was holding up my claim.

•I've tried calling hundreds of times. Always busy or they hang up after being on hold for hours.

For what it's worth, I filed on a Tuesday and got my first payment exactly 14 days later. Filed all my weekly claims on time and had direct deposit set up. No complications with my claim though - straightforward layoff situation.

•That's encouraging! Mine should be straightforward too, so hopefully I'll have similar timing.

•Fingers crossed for you! The anxiety during that waiting period is real.

Pro tip: if you're really struggling financially while waiting, some credit unions offer emergency loans for people waiting on unemployment benefits. Mine offered a small loan that I could pay back once benefits started.

•That's a great idea I hadn't considered. I'll check with my credit union.

•Definitely worth asking about. They understand that unemployment delays happen and are often willing to work with members.

Just remember that even after your claim is approved, there's usually a one-week waiting period before your first payment. So factor that into your timeline too.

Maya Jackson
•Oh I didn't know about the waiting period! So even after approval there's another week delay?

Jace Caspullo
•Yes, it's called the 'waiting week' and it's required by law in Washington. You'll eventually get paid for that week, but not until after you've received at least 4 weeks of benefits.

Don't forget about the job search requirements either. You need to be actively looking for work and keeping a log of your job search activities. That can affect your payments if you're not compliant.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?
0 coins
Melody Miles
•I believe it's 3 job search activities per week, but check the Washington ESD website for the current requirements. They can be applications, networking events, or other qualifying activities.

The whole process is anxiety-inducing when you're already stressed about money. Try to stay busy with job searching and other productive activities while you wait. It helps pass the time and you're required to be looking for work anyway.

•Good advice. I've been applying to jobs but probably should be more systematic about it.

•Exactly, and keeping good records of your job search activities will help when you file your weekly claims.

My advice: file your weekly claims religiously, respond to any ESD requests immediately, and try not to stress too much about the timeline. Most people get their first payment within 2-3 weeks assuming no complications.

•That's the right attitude. The money will come through, it's just a matter of waiting for the bureaucracy to work.
