How long after ESD appeal hearing until decision shows on eServices? Freaking out!
Had my appeal hearing with OAH judge last Friday (Jan 10) about being denied benefits from getting fired. I thought I did okay explaining my side but now I'm anxiously checking eServices every hour and nothing has changed. My portal still shows 'disqualified' status. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for a hearing decision to be posted to your account after the hearing is finished? The judge didn't give me any timeframe. I'm starting to worry they already decided against me and just haven't updated it yet. Bills are piling up and I really need to know if I should be looking for other options. Has anyone gone through this recently?

It typically takes 2-3 weeks for the Office of Administrative Hearings to issue a written decision after your hearing. The judge has to review all evidence and testimony before making their determination. Once they make a decision, it gets sent to ESD who then updates your eServices account. So there are actually two steps involved. Don't panic about the 'disqualified' status - that won't change until the new decision is processed. Sometimes it can take up to 30 days total, but that's on the longer end.

•Thank you so much! I had no idea it would take that long. I was thinking it would be updated within a day or two. That helps explain why nothing has changed yet. Do you know if they notify you by mail first or does it just appear in the portal?

•That's helpful to know, thanks! I'll keep an eye on my mailbox then instead of obsessively refreshing the portal. Did your status change from disqualified directly to qualified, or were there other statuses in between?

I WAITED SIX WEEKS after my hearing last year!!!! Six freaking weeks with ZERO communication from ESD!!! Then suddenly got backpay for everything. The system is BROKEN. They expect us to file weekly without fail but they can take FOREVER to tell you if you're even eligible. How are people supposed to survive??? My landlord wasn't exactly understanding about the whole "I might get paid in 6 weeks" situation!!! Complete bureaucratic nightmare!!!

•Six weeks is insane! I hope mine doesn't take that long. Did you try contacting them during that waiting period? I'm wondering if there's any way to check the status without just waiting indefinitely.

I went through this in March. It took exactly 18 days after my hearing for the decision to come in the mail, and another 4 days for my eServices to update. The important thing is to KEEP FILING YOUR WEEKLY CLAIMS during this time. Even if your status still shows disqualified, if your appeal is successful, you'll get paid for all those weeks you claimed (assuming you meet all other eligibility requirements for those weeks). I made the mistake of stopping my weekly claims for a couple weeks because I thought there was no point while waiting - lost out on almost $1500 because of that mistake.

•This is excellent advice. Always continue filing weekly claims while appeals are pending. Too many people miss out on benefits they're entitled to because they don't realize this important step. It's also worth noting that the decision letter you receive in the mail will have detailed instructions about what to do next, whether you won or lost the appeal. Read it carefully when it arrives.

my cousin had an appeal last month and she said it only took like 10 days? but that seemed pretty fast compared to what most people say. maybe depends on how complicated your case is or how busy they are right now?

•Your cousin got incredibly lucky! The OAH is seriously backlogged right now. I work with a nonprofit that helps people navigate UI benefits, and we're seeing 20-30 days as standard for appeal decisions to be processed. There's also been an uptick in claims with the recent tech sector layoffs in Washington, which has added to the delays.

If you need to speak with an ESD agent to check on your appeal status, I'd recommend using Claimyr. After waiting for weeks with no update on my appeal last year, I used their service and got through to an ESD rep who was able to tell me exactly where my case was in the process. Saved me a ton of anxiety. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Much better than calling dozens of times and getting disconnected.

•Good point! I've already had the hearing, but I'll definitely check my spam folder regularly in case they email the decision. Thanks for the reminder!

One more thing I forgot to mention - if your appeal is successful, there's sometimes a delay between when your status changes to eligible and when you actually receive payment. Mine took about 5 business days after my status changed for the money to hit my account. Just so you're prepared for that additional wait. The process has several stages and none of them seem to happen quickly with ESD unfortunately.

•Thank you for mentioning that. I'll definitely keep that in mind so I don't panic if there's a delay with the payment after (hopefully) winning the appeal. This whole process has been so much more complicated than I expected.

For clarification on the exact process: After your hearing, the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) typically has 30 days by law to issue a written decision, though most try to complete it within 2-3 weeks. This decision is mailed to you and to ESD simultaneously. ESD then needs to implement the judge's decision, which can take another 3-7 business days. If the decision is in your favor, your status will change from disqualified to eligible, and any back payments for weeks you properly claimed will be processed. If you haven't received anything after 30 days, you should contact the Office of Administrative Hearings (not ESD) at 1-800-366-0955 to inquire about the status of your decision. Their office is separate from ESD and handles all unemployment appeals.

•This is incredibly helpful - thank you for breaking down the whole process so clearly! I didn't realize the Office of Administrative Hearings was completely separate from ESD. I'll give them a call if I don't hear anything by February 10th. Really appreciate the direct contact number too.
