ESD disqualifying all my weeks - something about my 2020 employer and 7x $235 requirement?
I'm seriously at my wit's end with ESD right now. Got laid off on February 28th and filed for unemployment immediately the next day. But for some bizarre reason, EVERY SINGLE weekly claim I've filed is showing as 'disqualified' - all of them! Just got out of adjudication today and received the most confusing notice ever. It mentions something about a place I worked at back in 2020 (which was 5 years ago!) and says I can't get unemployment until I earn 7 times $235.00. But here's the thing - I've definitely earned way more than that at my most recent job! I've been working full-time making $28/hr for the last 3 years before getting laid off. I don't understand why they're looking at my 2020 employment history or what this 7x requirement even means. I've had zero income since February and it's almost May now. Has anyone dealt with something like this before? Any idea what's happening or what I should do? I've tried calling at least 20 times but can't get through to a human being.

What you're dealing with sounds like a previous disqualification issue. When you have a disqualification on your record, you sometimes need to "purge" it by earning a certain amount after that disqualification before you can qualify for benefits again. In your case, that amount is 7x $235 = $1,645. The good news is that if you've been working full-time for 3 years at $28/hr, you've definitely earned way more than that requirement. The problem is that ESD's system might not be connecting your recent earnings with that old disqualification requirement.

•Oh wow, that actually makes sense! I did have an issue back then where I quit a job without "good cause" according to ESD. But I thought that was ancient history. So the system is basically saying I still need to meet that old requirement before I can get benefits now, even though I've obviously met it? That's so frustrating!

•This ⬆️ happened to my brother too! ESD's computer systems are ANCIENT and sometimes don't automatically connect your new earnings with old disqualifications. You definitely need to talk to an actual person.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've been trying to call ESD all morning but keep getting the "high call volume" message and then it hangs up on me. This is so frustrating when I KNOW I've met their requirements! Is there any other way to get through to them besides calling over and over?

•There's a service called Claimyr that can help you get through to ESD without spending hours redialing. I was in a similar situation with an old disqualification issue from a previous job, and I couldn't get anyone on the phone for weeks. They basically hold your place in line and call you when they connect with an ESD agent. Saved me days of frustration. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out. After I finally got through to someone, they fixed my issue in about 10 minutes.

The 7x thing means you need to earn 7 times your weekly benefit amount after a disqualification before you can qualify again. But what's weird in your case is that the system is picking up an old job from 2020 instead of your recent work history. Did you have a prior claim that was denied back then? Sometimes the ESD computer system glitches and doesn't properly record that you've satisfied the requalification requirements.

•Yes! I did have a claim that was denied back in 2020. I quit a job without what ESD considered "good cause" so they disqualified me. But I didn't even apply for unemployment again until now - 5 years later! During that time I've earned well over $150k at my most recent employer. It seems crazy they'd still hold that against me.

I'VE BEEN THRU THIS EXACT NIGHTMARE!!! Their system is COMPLETELY BROKEN and doesn't automatically update when you've met the requalification requirements. You HAVE to talk to a human to fix this. It took me 3 WEEKS of calling EVERY DAY before I got through. They had to manually override the disqualification because their system didn't recognize I'd met the earnings requirement years ago. Once I finally talked to someone competent, they fixed it and I got backpay for all those weeks.

•This is unfortunately very common with ESD. Their systems don't always talk to each other correctly, especially when there's a previous disqualification involved. Once you get through to a claims specialist, ask them to verify that you've met the requalification earnings requirement and to manually override the disqualification.

I'm going through almost the exact same situation! Got disqualified for all my weeks too, but in my case it was because I had been on standby status at my previous job in 2022 and then didn't return when they called me back (I had already found a better job). Now ESD says I need to earn 10x my weekly benefit amount before I qualify again. Question for others who've fixed this: when you finally got through to ESD, did they fix all your weeks at once or did you have to keep calling?

•When they fixed mine, they fixed ALL weeks at once and I got a lump sum payment for everything about 2 days later. But you HAVE to get them to acknowledge you've met the requalification requirement FIRST. Don't let them rush you off the phone!

I worked at WorkSource and helped people with these issues. This is what's happening: you had a disqualification in 2020 that required you to earn 7x $235 to purge it. Even though you've earned more than enough since then, ESD's system requires a manual intervention to recognize this. It's ridiculous but happens all the time. One thing nobody mentioned - check your notices in eServices. There should be a letter explaining the exact reason for disqualification. You need this information when you call.

•Thank you! I just checked and found the letter. It specifically says "Disqualification from previous claim has not been satisfied. Claimant must earn 7x $235 in bona fide employment." So frustrating because I've earned WAAAY more than that! Going to try to call again tomorrow morning right when they open.

I heard if you email your state representative they can sometimes help push ESD to look at your claim faster! Might be worth trying while you're also attempting to call them?

•This is actually good advice. Contact your state representative's office and explain the situation. Many have staff dedicated to helping constituents with ESD issues. They can often get results when you're stuck in the system.

ALSO! Make sure you KEEP FILING YOUR WEEKLY CLAIMS even though they're showing as disqualified! When they fix this (and they will eventually) you'll only get paid for weeks you actually filed for.

Just to update - I used Claimyr a few months ago for a different issue (identity verification hell), and I got through to ESD in about 30 minutes after trying to call on my own for two weeks. Not all agents are equally helpful though - if the first person can't help, politely ask to be transferred to a claims specialist or adjudicator who can handle requalification issues.

•Did you have to pay a lot for the Claimyr service? At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything but worried about costs when I'm already not getting my benefits.

•The cost was reasonable considering I was about to lose my mind trying to get through on my own. Think of it as paying to save yourself hours (or days) of frustration. When you're missing entire benefit payments, the service cost is minimal in comparison.

UPDATE: After trying everything, I finally got through to ESD this morning! The agent confirmed exactly what you all said - I had a disqualification from 2020 that was still in their system, even though I've obviously earned way more than the requalification amount since then. They had to manually override it in the system. All my weeks have been changed from "disqualified" to "processing" and she said I should receive payment for all back weeks within 48 hours. THANK YOU all for your help and suggestions!

•That's great news! I'm so glad you got it resolved. This is unfortunately a common issue with ESD's system. For anyone else reading this with a similar problem - always keep filing your weekly claims even when they show as disqualified, and keep trying to reach a real person who can help.
