ESD asking me to file for week BEFORE my layoff - confused about weekly claim
I'm totally lost with this unemployment claim situation. I got laid off on Friday 4/26/25 and filed my initial claim the next day (4/27/25) to start my waiting week. Now when I logged in today, the system is telling me I need to file a weekly claim for 4/21/25-4/27/25... which makes no sense because I was still EMPLOYED for most of that week! I only lost my job on the last day of that week. I've tried calling ESD like 15 times today but either get a busy signal or it hangs up on me after the automated message. I sent a message through eServices but it says response time is up to 30 DAYS?! Are they serious?? I can't wait that long! Do I file the weekly claim even though I worked Monday-Thursday that week? Will I get in trouble for claiming benefits for days I was working? Or should I just wait until I can talk to someone? My savings won't last long and I'm getting really worried. Any advice from people who've dealt with this before?

This happens all the time with ESD. When you file an initial claim, it automatically generates a weekly claim for the week you applied, even if you weren't unemployed the whole week. Yes, you should absolutely file that weekly claim, but make sure to report ALL your work hours and earnings for Mon-Thurs. The system will automatically calculate any partial benefits you might be eligible for (probably none since you worked most of the week). If you don't file that weekly claim, it can mess up your whole claim going forward. So definitely file it, just be 100% honest about the hours you worked.

•Thank you so much! That makes me feel better. I'll go ahead and file it today and make sure I enter all my work hours. I was just worried about doing something wrong and getting penalized.

OMG the ESD system is SO frustrating!! I was in the exact same spot last year - laid off on a Thursday and then had to file for that partial week. Just make sure you put in your hours worked for those days. And yeah don't hold your breath on them responding to messages lol

I handle unemployment claims for my company, so I can clarify this a bit. When you file an initial claim, ESD automatically prompts you to file weekly claims starting with the week you applied, regardless of when in that week you became unemployed. You absolutely MUST file that weekly claim for 4/21-4/27 even though you only became unemployed on 4/26. When you complete the weekly claim: 1. Answer YES to "Did you work during this week?" 2. Enter your exact hours worked for Mon-Thurs 3. Enter your gross earnings (before taxes) for those days 4. Report your last day of work as 4/26 If you were paid for a full 32+ hours Mon-Thurs, you'll receive $0 in benefits for that week, but that's normal. The important thing is filing the claim properly to keep your claim active going forward. Don't skip filing this weekly claim or your claim might be delayed or denied entirely.

•This is super helpful! I logged in again and filed the weekly claim with my exact hours and earnings. You're right - I didn't get any benefits for the week since I worked almost the whole week, but at least now everything is in order. Thanks for the detailed explanation!

ur supposed to report ALL work even if its just one day lol. they will deduct whatever you earned from ur benefit amount. just be honest or they'll hit u with overpayment later. ESD cross-matches with employer records so they WILL find out if you dont report everything!!!

I've been through this nightmare with ESD so many times I should be an expert by now. Trying to actually TALK to someone at ESD is an exercise in futility. I spent 4 WEEKS trying to get through on their phone lines last year! Finally I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an ESD agent in less than 2 hours. It basically keeps dialing for you and holds your place in line. I was skeptical but it actually worked! Check their video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 to see how it works. Their website is claimyr.com But for your specific question - yes, file the weekly claim and report your work hours for Monday-Thursday. You probably won't get any benefits for that week, but at least your claim will be properly established going forward.

•Thanks for the tip about Claimyr! I might need that if I run into more issues. For now I've filed the weekly claim with my work hours reported, so hopefully that takes care of it. It's good to know there's an option if I need to talk to someone in the future.

•does that Claimyr thing really work? seems kinda sketchy to me. do they need your ssn or anything??

•No they don't need your SSN - it just helps you get through on the phone. You still talk directly to ESD once connected. I was desperate after weeks of trying to call, and it actually worked. Just sharing what helped me.

I'm FURIOUS with ESD right now!!! Been trying to get through for MONTHS on a different issue. Their whole system is designed to make it IMPOSSIBLE to get help. Why even have a phone number if no human ever answers?!?! Their message response time has gotten worse too - used to be 10 days, now 30?? They're clearly understaffed but that's not OUR problem as taxpayers who fund this whole system! I'm contacting my state rep about this.

Quick update for you: your first benefit week will be 4/28-5/4, which is your waiting week (no benefits paid but you must file a weekly claim). Then 5/5-5/11 would be your first payable week if you remain unemployed and meet all eligibility requirements. Also, don't forget you're required to complete and document 3 job search activities each week (including your waiting week) to remain eligible for benefits.

•Thanks for the reminder about job search activities! I've started keeping track of everything in a spreadsheet so I don't forget. And yes, I understand now about the waiting week - I filed my weekly claim for that period too.

i had almost the same issue back in february!! i got laid off on a wednesday and had to report my monday+tuesday hours. the dumb part was they made me wait ANOTHER full week for the "waiting week" even tho i already waited partially. ESD system makes no sense sometimes...

•EXACTLY!! The waiting week thing is so confusing. It's like they deliberately make the system complicated so people give up trying to get benefits they're entitled to. 🙄

Just to follow up on what others have said: I experienced this same issue a few months ago. To summarize what you need to do: 1. File the weekly claim for 4/21-4/27 and accurately report your work hours 2. Continue filing weekly claims every week after that, even for your waiting week 3. Complete and document 3 job search activities EVERY week 4. If your claim goes into adjudication (which happens randomly), be prepared to wait The system is frustrating, but as long as you're honest and keep filing on time, you'll get through it. Don't skip any weekly claims, even if you think you won't get paid for that week.

•Thanks for the clear summary! I've already filed for the partial week and I'll make sure to keep filing every week going forward. Now I just need to focus on my job search activities. Really appreciate everyone's help!
