ESD approval timeline in 2025? Getting laid off soon & worried about delays

Just got the bad news that our company is doing a round of layoffs next month. Management said we'll get some severance but it's barely 2 weeks worth. I'm trying to plan ahead because last time I needed unemployment in 2023, it took 6 weeks before my claim was approved and I got paid! I nearly missed rent payments waiting for that first check. Does anyone know if ESD is processing claims faster these days? I've heard rumors they updated their systems but who knows if that actually helped. My last claim had to go through adjudication because my employer contested it (even though they were the ones who laid me off). I'm trying to figure out how much I need to save from my final paychecks to cover the gap. Any insights from people who filed recently would be super helpful. Also, do I need to wait until my actual last day of work to file, or can I start the process earlier since I already know the layoff date?

I filed in January this year and got approved in about 10 days, much faster than during the pandemic years. BUT that was only because my claim was straightforward - no employer disputes, clean work history. If your employer contests it again or there are any issues that trigger adjudication, it could still take 3-4 weeks minimum. You can't file until after your last day of work. Make sure you have your final paystub and separation letter ready. Also, remember you need to do 3 job search activities every week once you start claiming. Document everything carefully in your job search log.

Thanks for the info! Hoping my claim will be straightforward but knowing my company, they might contest again just to be difficult. They're one of those places that automatically fights every unemployment claim. Good reminder about the job search activities too - I remember having to do that last time.

MY CLAIM TOOK 2 MONTHS!!!! just filed in march and ESD is STILL as slow as ever. dont believe anyone who says its faster now. they are LYING!!! the system is rigged to make us wait and give up. i had to call 53 TIMES before getting through to a agent. good luck but dont count on that money coming fast.

Same experience here! 47 days waiting before I saw a penny. It's ridiculous how they expect people to survive with no income for that long.

I've helped several clients navigate ESD claims this year, and the timing varies dramatically depending on several factors: 1. Whether your employer contests the claim (adds 2-4 weeks typically) 2. If you have multiple employers in your base year (can delay processing) 3. Whether you worked in multiple states (much longer) 4. If there are any identity verification issues (can add weeks) The standard processing for clean claims is about 2 weeks now, but if adjudication gets involved, you're looking at 3-5 weeks minimum. Make sure all your information is accurate when filing to avoid unnecessary delays. Also, respond immediately to any requests for additional information - these often come through your eServices account with no email notification, so check it daily. You can't file until after your last day, but you can create your eServices account now and gather all documentation to be ready.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'll make sure to check eServices daily once I file. Last time I missed a message and that probably added to my delay. I'm worried about the employer contesting part since they did that last time even though it was clearly a layoff. Is there anything I can do to prepare for that possibility?

i just went thru this 2 months ago. filed in march after getting laid off from construction job. took 3.5 weeks to get approved and then another week for first payment to hit my account. its not as bad as 2023 but still slow. make sure u call them if u dont see any update after 2 weeks cuz sometimes they dont tell u if theres a problem with ur claim

How did you even get through to ESD on the phone? I've been trying for days and it's either busy signals or the automated system hangs up on me because of "high call volume." So frustrating!

After helping people with ESD claims for years, I've found that using Claimyr is the most reliable way to actually reach an ESD agent. It's a service that helps you get through the phone system and get placed in the callback queue. I recommended it to a client last month who had been trying to call for 2 weeks with no success, and she got a callback within hours. You can see how it works at claimyr.com or watch their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Regarding your timeline question - current approval times are averaging 12-18 days for straightforward claims and 3-5 weeks for claims requiring adjudication. The system improvements they made last fall definitely helped speed things up from the 6+ week waits during 2023.

I hadn't heard of Claimyr before, but I'll definitely check it out if I run into problems. 12-18 days would be manageable with my savings, but 5 weeks would be cutting it close. Thanks for the specific timeline info!

Question - when you say your employer contested your claim last time, do you mean they said you were fired for cause instead of laid off? That happened to my brother and it was a whole mess with the adjudication. He had to provide tons of documentation to prove it really was a layoff. Just curious if that's the same situation you had?

Yeah, something like that. They claimed I had "performance issues" when in reality they eliminated my entire department. I had to submit copies of the layoff announcement email and my performance reviews (which were all positive) to prove my case. Eventually ESD sided with me, but it dragged the process out for weeks. I'm worried they'll try the same thing again.

If you're worried about your employer contesting the claim again, start gathering evidence now: 1. Save any emails or documents about the layoff 2. Get the official layoff notice in writing if possible 3. Save any recent positive performance reviews 4. Document if others are being laid off at the same time (shows it's not just you) 5. Request a clear statement of the reason for separation in writing Having this documentation ready to upload when requested can speed up the adjudication process by several days. Also, when you file, be very clear in your initial application that this is a layoff due to lack of work/business needs/etc. - use those specific terms.

This is excellent advice, thank you! I'll start putting together a folder with all this documentation now. I know they're laying off about 15% of staff, so I can definitely show it's not just me. And I'll be careful about the wording on my application.

One other thing to consider - have you checked what your weekly benefit amount might be? The calculator on ESD's website is pretty accurate. Knowing that number can help with your budgeting while you wait for approval. Also don't forget that the first week is a waiting week (you don't get paid for it) so factor that into your calculations too.

Good point about the waiting week! I had forgotten about that. I'll check the calculator today. I think I should be eligible for the max amount based on my salary, but it's good to confirm.
