ESD approval timeline after layoff - temp assignment ended 4/1, how long to wait?

Just got laid off from my job because the company is shutting down (last day was April 1st). I was technically employed through a temp agency, but the assignment ended when the company closed. I filed my claim right away and got an email saying to apply weekly, but I'm still waiting on approval. Anyone know how long this typically takes? I was on unemployment for a couple months last year but can't remember if there was a big delay getting approved or not. Bills are coming up and I'm starting to get nervous about the timing. Is ESD processing claims faster these days or should I be prepared for a long wait?

it totally depends on if theres any issues with ur claim. mine took like 3 days last month but my friend has been waiting 3 weeks bc they had to verify something with her employer. did u check ur eservices account to see if theres any alerts?

No alerts showing up in my eServices account yet. That's part of what's weird. It just shows

The standard processing time for a straightforward unemployment claim with ESD is currently 1-2 weeks, assuming there are no issues that require adjudication. Since you mentioned you were working through a temp agency, this might trigger additional verification steps. ESD needs to confirm with the temp agency that your assignment truly ended (rather than you choosing to leave).\n\nHere's what you should do:\n1. Check your eServices account daily for alerts or requests for information\n2. Look for a \

Thank you - this is super helpful! I didn't think about the temp agency angle potentially slowing things down. I'll give them a call tomorrow to make sure they're responding to ESD. And I'll keep filing my weekly claims in the meantime.

Omg 2 months?? What did you do about bills during that time? That's what I'm worried about.

If your claim is taking longer than expected, it's probably because of the temp agency situation. ESD has to verify with BOTH the actual workplace that closed AND the temp agency. Double verification = double the wait time in many cases. \n\nI was in a similar position last year (worked through a staffing agency), and my claim was stuck for 4 weeks because the temp agency was slow responding to ESD's requests. What's super frustrating is that you won't see any indication of this on your eServices account! The status just shows as

This is exactly right. When I worked at a temp agency, we had to complete employer verification forms for ESD that confirm the assignment ended (not that the person quit). If the temp agency is slow with paperwork, claims get delayed. The most frustrating part is ESD won't tell you this is the hold-up - the system just shows as pending.

I'm going to call my temp agency right now! I had no idea they needed to do verification paperwork. Really appreciate the insights.

I got laid off in February and my claim was approved in 5 days!! But then my sister applied in March and has been waiting for 3 weeks. I think it just depends on how busy they are and if there's anything weird with your case. The temp agency thing probably complicates it.

I had the EXACT same situation! Was with a temp agency and the company I was placed at closed down. My claim was stuck for almost 3 weeks and I was getting desperate. I finally used Claimyr to connect with an ESD agent (https://claimyr.com) - there's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3\n\nThe agent told me they were waiting for verification from the temp agency but never notified me! Once I got through to someone, they were able to expedite everything and I got paid within a week. Super worth it because I found out exactly what was causing the delay and got it fixed instead of just waiting in the dark. Honestly wish I'd known about it sooner.

It did for me! Basically gets you past the phone queue so you actually talk to someone at ESD. The waiting on hold part still sucks but at least you're in line instead of getting hung up on.

UPDATE: Called my temp agency this morning and you all were right! They said ESD contacted them last week for verification but the person who handles those requests was out sick. They're sending the verification today. Seems like such a simple thing that's been holding up my whole claim! Going to give it a few more days and then try calling ESD directly if it's still pending. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Great detective work! This is exactly why it's important to be proactive with claims involving multiple employers. Now that the temp agency is submitting the verification, your claim should move forward within 3-5 business days. Just keep filing your weekly claims in the meantime, and you'll receive all eligible back payments once approved.
