ESD adjudication with no income - new job starts Oct 30 - need help speeding up approval

I got laid off September 1st and immediately filed for unemployment. It's been stuck in adjudication for almost a month now with ZERO income coming in. I finally landed a new position but don't start until October 30th, with first paycheck not arriving until November 10th! I'm seriously stressing about how to cover basic expenses for the next 6 weeks. The worst part? I've tried applying for utility assistance programs (power/water/phone/garbage) but they ALL say they can't help until my unemployment is actually approved! Is there ANY way to speed up the adjudication process? I've called ESD multiple times but can never get through to a real person. I'm at the point where I might have to borrow money from my mom for gas and groceries just to survive until my new job starts, which is incredibly embarrassing at my age. Anyone successfully navigated this nightmare and have tips? Or know if there are emergency assistance programs that don't require ESD approval first?

Thanks for the tip! I've been trying mid-morning, so maybe that's why I can't get through. I'll set an alarm for 7:55am tomorrow and start calling right at 8. Did they give you any explanation for why your claim was stuck for so long?

I recommend you request an escalation of your claim. When you're able to reach an agent, specifically ask for your claim to be escalated due to financial hardship. Be prepared to explain your situation - no income, new job not starting for several weeks, bills piling up. In the meantime, try contacting your county's Community Action Agency. They often have emergency assistance funds that don't require ESD approval. Also, food banks don't require any verification of unemployment status. For utilities specifically, call each provider directly and ask about their internal hardship programs rather than the general assistance programs. Many utilities have their own emergency funds that work differently than the state assistance programs.

Thank you so much for this information! I didn't know I could request an escalation based on hardship. I'll definitely do that if I can get through to someone. And I hadn't thought about contacting the Community Action Agency - that's a great suggestion. I'll look them up right away.

ESD is THE WORST!!!!! I waited 2 months in "adjudication" last year and when I finally got approved they said I had to pay back $2,000 because of some mistake THEY made!!!! The whole system is designed to make people give up. Good luck getting anyone to actually help you.

While I understand your frustration, spreading negativity doesn't help the original poster's situation. Many claims are processed without issues, and there are legitimate reasons why some claims require adjudication. The system isn't perfect, but it's not designed to make people give up. ESD is managing thousands of claims with limited staff. To the original poster: Focus on the practical advice others have shared here. Document all your attempts to contact ESD, and keep filing your weekly claims while in adjudication. When your claim is approved, you'll receive all eligible back payments.

Have you tried Claimyr? It helped me get through to ESD after weeks of trying. The service connects you with an ESD agent, usually within an hour or so. Costs money but was worth it in my situation. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 or their website claimyr.com Once I got through to a real person, I explained my financial hardship and they were able to expedite my claim. Just make sure you have all your documentation ready when you call.

Does this actually work? Seems suspicious that you have to pay to talk to a govt agency you should be able to reach for free...

It worked for me - they don't replace the government service, they just help you get through the phone system. I was skeptical too but after trying for 3 weeks on my own, I was desperate. You still talk directly to actual ESD employees.

My neighbor was telling me she had the same issue last month but her adjudication was because her employer disputed something about her hours? Maybe check if your former employer is causing the holdup. She had to wait like 5 weeks tho even after calling multiple times soooo yeah the system is pretty broken lol

Something else to consider: Make sure you're still doing your weekly job search activities and filing your weekly claims even while in adjudication. Many people don't realize this is required. If you don't do this, once your claim is approved, you won't receive payments for weeks where you didn't complete these requirements. The standard is 3 job search activities per week, which you need to document. Since you already have a job lined up, you can request 'standby' status, which may waive the job search requirement until your job starts. Call and specifically ask about this option.

Thank you for mentioning this! I've been filing my weekly claims but didn't know about the possibility of standby status. That would be really helpful since I do have a confirmed start date. I'll definitely ask about this when I call.

Call ur state representative!!!! Thats what finally worked for me. Google who represents your address, email AND call their office and explain ur situation. My rep had a staff person who dealt with ESD issues and got my claim fixed in 3 days after I waited for 7 weeks!!!

Wow, that's amazing! I never would have thought of contacting my state rep. I'll definitely try this approach too. Thank you for sharing what worked for you!

To clarify some information that's been shared in this thread: 1. Adjudication typically occurs when there's a question about your eligibility. Common reasons include: job separation issues (were you truly laid off or was there misconduct?), availability for work, or earnings verification. 2. You can request standby status if you have a definite return-to-work date within 4 weeks. Since your new job starts Oct 30, you might qualify depending on when you applied. This would waive job search requirements. 3. For immediate assistance while waiting: - 211 is a resource hotline that can connect you with emergency services - Churches and community organizations often have emergency funds - Food banks do not require unemployment verification - Most utility companies have internal emergency assistance programs 4. Keep detailed records of all your attempts to contact ESD, as well as documentation of financial hardship. This can help if you need to escalate your case. If your circumstances are particularly dire (eviction risk, inability to afford medication, etc.), make sure to clearly communicate this when you reach an agent.

Thank you so much for this comprehensive breakdown! I'll call 211 today and see what resources might be available. And I'll definitely keep better records of my contact attempts with ESD going forward.

I tried calling at 8am sharp today but still couldn't get through - got the "high call volume" message and it disconnected me. But I did contact my state rep's office like someone suggested! They took down all my info and said they have a liaison who works with ESD. Fingers crossed that helps. Also found a local food bank that doesn't require any verification, so at least I'll have some groceries while I wait.
