Stuck in ESD adjudication for 3 weeks - already contacted legislators with no response

I got laid off from my manufacturing job on December 31st, 2024 (thanks for the New Year's present, boss). Applied for unemployment on January 4th and uploaded all requested documents right away - W2s, separation letter, everything they asked for. But here I am three weeks later, and my claim is STILL showing 'Adjudication in progress' with absolutely no movement. I've tried everything I can think of - emailed all 3 of my legislators last week (zero response), called the ESD phone line at least 20 times (always 'no available agents, please try again later'), sent messages through the eServices portal (crickets). I'm going on week 4 with no income and my savings is dwindling fast. Is there anything else I can do to speed this up? Do I need to start selling stuff to pay rent next month? Any advice from people who've been stuck in adjudication hell before would be really appreciated.

This is unfortunately super common with ESD these days. My claim was stuck in adjudication for 5 weeks before it finally got approved. The most likely reason is they're verifying your separation details with your employer. If your employer is slow to respond or contests the layoff in any way, it gets flagged for manual review (aka adjudication). If it helps at all, once approved, you'll get all those back weeks paid at once. But I know that doesn't help with immediate bills.

Thanks for responding. My former employer actually told me they wouldn't contest it since it was a company-wide reduction. Maybe they're still dragging their feet with the paperwork though? 5 weeks seems insane for something that should be straightforward. Did you do anything specific that finally got yours moving?

have u tried calling right when they open at 8am??? thats what i did and still took like 30 tries but eventually got thru. also make sure ur doing ur weekly claims even tho ur not getting paid yet!!!!!

I've tried calling at 8am, 9am, 11am, 2pm... it's always the same message. But yes, I've been faithfully filing my weekly claims even though they're all just sitting there in pending status. Thanks for the reminder though, I know some people forget and that causes even more delays.

Call your legislators OFFICE not just email!!!! Emails get ignored but phone calls don't. I was stuck in adjudication for 8 miserable weeks until I called my state rep's office and spoke to a staffer who got things moving within 2 days. They have special contacts at ESD that actually answer their phones.

That's brilliant advice, thank you! I'll look up their office numbers and start calling tomorrow morning. I didn't realize emailing was so useless. Appreciate the tip!

I had the exact same issue last month. After trying for weeks to get through to ESD with no luck, I discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent was able to tell me exactly why my claim was in adjudication (former employer hadn't responded) and put a note in my file to expedite review. Got approved 3 days later. Definitely worth it when you're desperate to get answers.

is this legit? sounds sketchy to pay someone just to make a phone call for you

my neighbr was stuck in adjudication for 2 MONTHS!!!!! esd is SO BROKEN its unbelievable. he ended up having to take a terrible job at mcdonalds just to pay rent while waiting. the whole system needs to be thrown in the trash seriously.

Oh God, 2 months? I can't wait that long... I'm already interviewing but nothing lined up yet. McDonalds might actually be in my future if this drags on much longer. This is so frustrating.

I work with unemployment claims frequently, and here's what you need to know: 1. Adjudication typically happens when there's a "flag" on your claim that requires manual review. Common flags include: employer contesting the separation reason, earnings verification issues, availability for work questions, or identity verification. 2. The standard adjudication process is currently taking 4-6 weeks due to high volume. 3. While waiting, make absolutely sure you: - File your weekly claims on time every week - Complete your three job search activities weekly and log them - Respond immediately to any requests for information - Keep your contact information updated 4. If you have immediate financial needs, contact your local WorkSource office about emergency assistance programs while waiting for unemployment benefits.

Thank you for this detailed information. I've been doing all the weekly claims and job search activities. I didn't know about WorkSource having emergency assistance though - I'll definitely look into that tomorrow. Do you happen to know if there's any way to find out WHICH flag is holding up my claim specifically? The online portal shows nothing.

Unfortunately, the specific flag isn't typically visible to claimants in the online portal. The only reliable way to find out is to speak directly with an ESD agent. If you've tried calling without success, the legislative office route mentioned above can work well, or you might consider using a call connection service to reach an agent directly.

Quick update suggestion - if you're not already, make sure you're answering "YES" to the question about being able and available for work on your weekly claims. Some people mistakenly say "no" thinking it means they don't have a job yet, but that actually flags your claim for adjudication since being available for work is a requirement for benefits.

Yes, I've been answering that correctly. I'm definitely able and available and have been saying so on all claims. Good tip though, as I can see how people might misunderstand that question.

Just wanted to check back - any updates? Were you able to get through to anyone yet? Don't give up!

I called my state rep's office this morning like you suggested! Their staff was super helpful and took all my info. They said they've been getting tons of similar calls and have a direct contact at ESD they'll reach out to. They said to expect a call or email within 3-5 business days. Fingers crossed this works! I'll update when I hear something.
